Unboxing: Battlestar Galactica – Starship Battles Starter Set
January 28, 2019 by dignity
Justin and Sam take a quick look at the Battlestar Galactica - Starship Battles Starter Set from Ares Games.
Starship Battles is a combat miniatures game inspired by Ares Games' WWII air combat game Wings of Glory, but featuring new additions to the system to represent your cinematic space battles.
Whether you want to recreate the classic 1970s show or the recent reincarnation the guys at Ares have got you covered.
Who else wants to see these guys get a playthrough?

I will get this once the original set comes out. There is only one Battlestar Galactica for me.
Did you dig a hole for Justin or did Sam get a box to stand on? 😉
On the subject of the game: nah, not mine. And I really disliked the cylons in the new series. Shiny chrome robots ftw! 😉
Forced perspective, Sam’s actually several miles away from Justin.
Ah, that explains a lot 😉
Sam had very broad shoulder to make up for it.
Not sure why Ares cannot seem to include pull bags for the chits. A small detail that I believe they overlook. Given the recent accessibility article on this site, the “Flaws”, “Others” and “Pilot Skill” cards being Mini-euro size is not good. The text is going to be very small and difficult to read and worse the limited space will sometime mean sparse wording making some of those rules hard to interpret. Otherwise, the game looks interesting.
Got too many space games that arn’t getting played to buy it (at the moment) but wish them well with it, Does look like interesting system.
Be interested to see a lets play.
The winner of the prize will he/she be able to choose between gift card or something else from Justins home? Just asking for a friend, honest.
Being lucky in the Battlestar Galactica universe just means you die very early on and painless so you don’t have to suffer through the rest.
Sam “You went drinking in Uni, and never attended your Philosophy lecturers” MONSTER

Also: I’m intrigued with that shop showing in the background… I wonder when will we see more from that? 😉
your not alone same it was one that tased me by too.
But if you cut off the corners of books don’t you end up with double the amount of corners???!!
Nice to see the new set being shown off. I still love the weekender set unboxings but this really bring the focus on to the products being shown.
I don’t think I’ll be picking this one up as I never managed to get into battlestar. If this was done with the stargate or firefly IP that would be a different question entirely.
love the look of the game but something makes me feel uneasy about it. I think it looks like it has to many components to see a smooth gam play.
The inertia mechanic is a nice touch; it’s something forgotten about in a lot of sci-fi (at least mainstream sci-fi) – think about all the times in a sci-fi film/the series where a ship gets hit and it’s engines go down and it just stops (The Last Jedi springs to mind, one of its many failings is when the Resistance is fleeing a First Order fleet and is running low on fuel, then when a ship runs out of fuel it stops, and infact it even starts inexplicably ‘tumbling’ backwards towards the pursuers! ?). I’m with Sam on disliking an… Read more »
Surely the rest of the ships are under thrust? (ie still accelerating), so of course from the viewer’s perspective the out-of-fuel ship appears to drop behind – it hasn’t stopped, it’s just no longer accelerating?
Possibly, but that doesn’t explain the tumbling. Only seen the film once, so may be misremembering, but it didn’t look like they were gradually dropping behind as the fuelled ships continued accelerating but instead just dropped back as if they’d stopped abruptly.
It would be nice to see the original series ships.
I’m loving the idea of momentum in being important in this game…. Visions of Starbuck being able to do a power slide in her viper then barrelrolling into the cyclones! It might make the game feel more like space skirmishes…. Sometimes x-wing feels very 2d and like the ships are running on tram lines instead of flying through space.
looks a nice simple rule system to learn.
I’ve just picked this up. I’m a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica and spaceship games so a no-brainer. They’ve got plans to release expansions including Starbuck, Scar, Starbuck in a Cylon Raider which are on pre order. They’re also doing the Raptor and a large (but not in scale) Galactica.
My only concern is quality,my sealed box contents were scattered, the stickers were crumpled and I had to glue a Raider back together.
Do a play through please guys!
I dig it!
Love the Reimagined BSG series… the Ares Game models and packaging look beautiful… but have no experience of space ship combat games like X-Wing… and all those tokens and movement templates kind of put me off somewhat.
Uhh, this is something i will look out for in my FLGS. Loved the reimagined series and this ships and the look&feel of the game components really get me hooked.
Like to see a Battle Report on this game 🙂 and I hope it will have a good success as X-Wing, because I love the Battlestar Galactica setting.
Some minor flaws are in there as missing some bags.
I am really on the fence on this one. I really like the idea and the setting, but Ares is terrible at support. I have been waiting on reprints of core items for Sails of Glory for 2 years now. It makes me nervous to get into anything they publish as I worry I will not be able to get items for it in a year when they move onto their next project.
Battlestar Galactica looks cool
Those plastic trays just make me want a biscuit selection
