The Retribution Houseguard Turn To Plastic!
July 15, 2013 by brennon
Privateer Press have some more halberdiers for you in the wake of the Warmachine weekend. This time they are for Retribution and take the form of the Houseguard Halberdiers...
"The majority of the houseguard are career soldiers who have spent years at drill and formation. Though they are drawn from dozens of lesser Iosan households, all follow an ancient shared tradition and undergo similar disciplined training and drills. At the orders of their superiors, ranks of halberdiers form a tide of rising and falling steel that can cut down masses of enemies with deliberate ease."
Those are some pretty heavily armoured Elves with some pretty big weapons too. As I mentioned at the top of the article they are now in plastic and the metal ones will be phased out by October.
I quite like the models but something about them sticks in my craw. I think it's the helmets actually as they seem to have squeezed their heads into odd shapes. But then again, they are Elves. I do not care for these pointy eared fools!
What do you think of them?
What is it with fantasy sculptors and elves. The secondary function of a helmet ( The main one is to keep your brains in your skull) is to prevent damage or loss of ears. Every model I see has the ears outside the helmet ready for cutting off or smashing to a pulp. {rant mode off}
It’s right up there with shaped breasts in female armor, which would actually make it easier to kill them in a real fight. I think the key here is “fantasy” armor. The primary consideration is generally communicating character information through aesthetic cues, rather than realistic representation. Though I too would like a little more thought and consideration in my fantasy over all. I’m kind of tired of every fantasy character having a callous disregard for their own survival (as communicated by their attire, weapons, stances and just about everything else).

Everyone says so, until someone releases such models, and then it’s “Eh, why isn’t it more fantasy?” It’s the same with ALIEN aliens. You finally get someone to reelease those phase-tentacle-space-barnacles-of-doom, and then they flop cause everyone just gets more humans in rubber masks like say, tau or elfdar.
On a more related topic, good models, good material, good overall.
I like the considered minis, and I vote with my wallet in their favor whenever I can. As for the truly alien aliens, I honestly haven’t seen very many and I’m kind of torn. Aliens in scifi are rarely really alien. They’re usually symbolic tropes, and I understand that and accept it because the human issues explored in the symbolized aliens are still valid and unresolved. I understand that chainmail bikinis are a symbolic trope as well, but I guess I’m just growing tired of that trope. It’s not exploring issues to seek resolution so much as it is just… Read more »
Its good to see these getting plastic release.
