Mennes’ Mini-Mashup: The Butcher
February 11, 2016 by crew
We're excited to bring you a fantastic new mini-series with our dear friend Tomas Mennes. Tomas has a fantastic history in chopping up models and mashing them together. He has joined us in the studio to bring you three amazing tutorials showing how you take apart, join together and perfectly mash-up your models.
You can find all of Tomas projects on his personal blog including Khador builds, Mecha Legion builds, and upcoming works he's planned.
In the first video of the series Tomas takes the head off Kommand Zoktavir, The Butcher Unleashed and replaces it with someone very familiar...but who?
We also have his two bestial hounds to toy around with and do something very unique too!
What do you think of his work?
Big thanks to @tmsmnns from all of us. Looking forward to seeing this ramp up 🙂
Nice vid, really enjoyed that.
Great video, love to see someone taking the effort on a metal mini rather than complaining that plastics are better to convert.
Of coarse superglue isn’t the correct way to base miniatures. I wouldn’t use it nearly as often if it was correct…
One thing to watch, certain materials react to superglue, some flocks I’ve used get quite warm if you use superglue, and if you try to use thread as rope or cables they get really warm and give off little puffs of white acrid smoke that smells like teargas.
Thanks, man.
I wanted to start with a metal miniature, because the basics of cutting, drilling and pinning are so much more important on metal models. Once you get the hang of that, plastics will be even easier.
I know what you’re saying about superglue. I once left a blob of superglue to dry on its own, to see what would happen. It gets extremely hot, but when it dries, the surface actually bursts open because of the difference in heat and the chemical processes at work. Not something to try again 🙂
I had a bottle of superglue, where the lid were stuck (as if superglued. ..) so also getting annoyed I used force, ending up ripping the bottle spilling it over my self. And yes smoke did develop from my pants, I am just happy it were “just” on the ties not elsewhere. ..
Building and converting models is my entire hobby, so I’m really pleased to see a series like this, and cant wait to see more.
I love the little tank and walker by the way. Very simple to do, but great little additions, plus they made me laugh :).
Great stuff!
The little mecha and tank are cute (although they would look out of place on a Warmachine table).
@dignity Kommand Justin, The Butcher Unleashed, looks cool even though he plays Cygnar/Circle instead of Khador =p
Might have been better to put his head on Captain Allister Caine

Then he could have been Cygnar Captain Justin Caine – Pew Pew =)
Really glad to see you on board, loving this new section. Will you be doing any painting tutorials alongside your builds?
There aren’t any painting tutorials planned at the moment. We have a brilliant house painter here at Beasts of War, so I was planning on sticking to conversions for now.
Then again, if there’s demand, who knows?
Hurray!!! Justyn’s ((and Warren’s) head makes an appearance again!!!! Alas poor Warren, we knew you well.
Been looking forward to this one after seeing the mini
The glee with which Justin show off that model ….
Cool show, showing off the fun part of the hobby many misses out on by just going out of the box
Good overview of pinning. Looking forward to more videos.
Kommander @dignity, the Butcher Unleashed 😀 . Does Justin still use the Khador army we saw in the Battlefoam tourney box unboxing ? If the answer is yes, he has just found his caster for life 😀 😀 .
i had a Khador Force, this may make me get them back up to speed 🙂
That would be cool. Then a battle report can be put together , with Kommander Justin and his Argus companions John and Lloyd at the head of some Khador heavy infantry and jacks.
sweet! i do a lot of conversion as wel and was waiting for that series to come out. tis was a bit basic so I hope it will grow to something bigger and advanced! so MORE MORE MORE!
Don’t worry, it will become less basic. I just felt it would be strange not tackling pinning and putting a model together first. With the basics out of the way, we can start to focus on the fun parts 🙂
Great tutorial. Thank BOW
@tmsmnns this is great! I have occasionally attempted basic conversions in the past, but usually nothing more than a weapon or hand swap. I look forward to more of these tutorials because I always wanted to get better.
Id love this to Ramp up too Justin. I loves me some conversions.
