Warlord Games Get Stuck Into A Strontium Dog Playthrough
September 6, 2018 by brennon
Warlord Games has put together a playthrough of Strontium Dog. So, if you've ever wanted to get stuck into this game you now have a good way to see whether or not the mechanics are for you.
If the gameplay up above has caught your eye then you might want to check out the Starter Set they created for the game called The Good, The Bad & The Mutie which throws Johnny Alpha and friends up against some nefarious villains.
What do you think of the game?

I picked this up on release day, as I’m old enough to remember the comics the first time around. It seems pretty innovative in some of its mechanics, and with Andy Chambers and Gav Thorpe designing it, it surely has some good credentials. Looking forward to giving it a whirl when I get the time.
I do wonder whether the IP will appeal to anyone much under 40 though. Not because there’s anything intrinsically wrong with it, but that I thought it was pretty obscure as no new stories have been published for decades!
I think you have a point there @osbad – I think the game has a very niche appeal but, if the game is good, then that should carry it. I know I’ve looked at this and been very ‘interested’ in the weird characters.
I thought the same, and was surprised they didn’t start with Judge Dredd. 2000AD is still going strong, but I thing Strontium Dog is a bit too obscure for younger players. If only they knew how much cross pollination there was between 2000Ad and early 40K, Rogue Trader era. You only have to read Nemesis the Warlock to realise that the early GW staff all read 2000AD, both creative teams were of an age and background and that the art style influenced GW artists. As soon as I saw the Strontium Dog miniatures I thought of classic Citadel miniatures, but… Read more »
I suppose these days there are many “niche within niche” games coming out. Particularly in the small skirmish category. So I guess it is better than starting with a completely unknown IP from scratch. With all the models being metal they haven’t got a huge upfront investment to justify, and I can easily see the old farts who read 2000AD in the 1980’s such as myself being a large enough contingent with deep enough wallets to justify the game’s existence in the short term. I really hope the game is good enough to go beyond that though and not just… Read more »
Big plus point is that the game seems to play out much like a SD strip in 2000AD.
Volgans? You mean the “Invasion” strip

Also the genesis of ABC Warriors (this not remembered by many)
That’s the one!
nothing new has been done but the Case File have been released so theres a whole new generation who have picked them up as well as us old fans, plus the Simon Pegg series so i can see why they went with this
Well this does seem interesting. Not sure if I will pick this game up but if I find others that want to play it then why not. Then again Finland is still mostly GW country when it comes to miniature wargaming so finding players for sci-fi and fantasy systems from other companies isn’t easy.
If you get a chance peek at the rulebook, lovely in full colour, rules for designing your own alien/robot/scum etc, build your own weapon and rules for bikes/other mounts etc. Full campaign system too. Warlord has done a great job and when its Judges turn, things will be crazy, so many have the figures and are waiting, and it will come. So many skirmish games on the market, but this one feels right
Will have to see the play through video to refresh my memory of the s dog later.

Game looks good but not bothered about Strontium Dog. If this was Judge Dredd then i’d be tempted to buy.
EN Publishing has a Judge Dredd RPG on Kickstarter at the end of September https://www.worldsof2000adrpg.com/
Looks like this will expend to cover all the main 2000AD characters eventually (if it sells well).
Not sure on this one, love the minis (Warlord did a really good job on capturing the “look”), and love Strontium Dog enough to “almost” buy it for the minis. But these days I look for things coming out post launch in things like narrative campaign books (Warlord did well with Gates of Antaries and BA). But for me a system with just 6 scenarios published isn’t enough (I want more books and rules and scenarios before I buy in). These days sci-fi skirmish systems are ten a penny, so the only “hook” to get players in is the “world”… Read more »
The core rule book comes with narrative campaign, the 6 scenarios are just to tell the story of the figures in the box set, so you have all that you need for that to start you off. The campaign system can create with a couple of tables 18 different types of scenarios, each can have a attacker and defender to them. So if you was attacking a hideout It could be the bounty hunters attacking the gangs hide out, or the gang getting a jump on the hunters as they rest up in there quarters. Throw in aliens, robots and… Read more »
Yup, but there’s a difference between a generated scenario and a “narrative” scenario in a campaign. A narrative campaign allows scenarios that branch out from the norm, add more scenario specific rules, or just genially “mix things up a little”. If you think back to those epics of Bloodbath at Orcs Drift and Tears of Isha, these gave a great campaign that told stories, events from previous battles carried forwards to the next. All in all it gave a great gaming experience, that also expanded on the game world. I’d like to see a little more of this come back… Read more »
I enjoyed my playthrough, but not a game I would pick up, I don’t think it would have the mileage for me. However, I would certainly play again.
looks a fun game that you could even play on the train with the small map.
