Warlord Games Begin SPQR Revised Edition Pre-Order Scheme
February 18, 2021 by brennon
Warlord Games is now taking pre-orders for the new Revised Edition of SPQR which deals with a lot of issues found in the initial release of the game. Community feedback has been taken on board and there is also a Redemption Scheme in place for those who bought into the game originally.

Here is what the team at Warlord Games had to say about the new Revised Edition of the rules...
"Following the initial release of SPQR in 2019, we have been inundated with player feedback concerning the game mechanics. It is always important that we take into account the wisdom of practising wargamers and humbly recognise some of the issues raised by players in the SPQR community. We have this taken some of those suggestions and reworked and streamlined the game system to alleviate these issues, as well as rebalancing and tweaking unit point structures to promote overall balance."
This obviously means that those who dived into the game are now having to buy an entirely new rulebook. Well, Warlord Games are looking to help in that regard with their limited-time Redemption Scheme...
"Until 24th March 2021, simply purchase one of the selected SPQR infantry box sets (there's a choice for each currently available SPQR faction) from the Warlord Games webstore or any participating retailers, and you'll receive the revised edition rulebook completely free. This offer is strictly limited to one per customer/household. All redemption scheme orders will be shipped at the closure of the redemption scheme period, on 24th March 2021."
So, you do still have to dive in and pick up something new but it does get you the book that you need with the updated rules inside. There are some of the smaller sets available but you can also pick up the new A Clash Of Heroes Starter Set.

This comes with a wild band of Gauls and plenty of Romans to try and stop them. The Infantry Sets mentioned above are also available for each of the different factions but I've shown off just two of them down below.
Caesar's Legions // Warlord Games
Gaul // Warlord Games
As well as the Romans and the Gauls you can also pick up sets for the Macedonians, Germania, Dacia & Sarmatia and finally a set of Mercenaries from Numidia. Each of these, at present, is available as part of the Redemption Scheme for the new rulebook.
Are you tempted to dive in and give the Revised Edition of SPQR a go?

This is a big pass from me. I bought a starter set of these models mostly to use for Infamy, Infamy! but wow this is a real slap in the face to anyone who actually plays this. They could have owned it and thrown the .pdf up for free, but instead they are going to try and gouge you for more money (for models that are either ripped from earlier kits they had that were cheaper per model or new models that are in their resin which is a middle ground that isn’t very good). I support them in many… Read more »
‘free’ would have been nice, but it’s not as if they have money to burn and can afford to give away stuff that cost them money to do … (especially after 2020 which hasn’t been that great for everyone). A quick check shows the original rulebook was +/- 30$ … Besides … release 2019 … that’s almost 2 years ago by now. Yes, it sucks that the game wasn’t perfect at release altough I’d still argue that it was more due to mismatched expecations and less due to bad rules. Warlord aren’t the only company to re-use existing kits across… Read more »
The game wasn’t just not perfect at release it was literally unplayable. You needed to take your brand new rulebook, go online and print out pages of errata and jam it in there. Warlord did massive damage to their public image with this game. I would argue bad rules seeing as they needed to completely redo an entire phase of rules, call me silly but I would have thought the combat phase quite critical to an ancient wargame. The standard is so low now with companies like GW and Warlord just dumping unfinished things and fixing them with online pdfs… Read more »
Not exactly the first time Warlord have done it as well
when people buy stuff before waiting for reviews … this sort of thing is bound to happen. I see two options here : (1) the ‘revised’ edition is the rulebook with all FAQ/updates released so far If you like what it has become then the option to get it for ‘free’ is great (GW simply releases a new version at full price … and expects you to buy even more stuff … ). (2) the ‘revised’ edition is a major rewrite after the FAQ/updates … In which case getting it ‘free’ is still a gamble and you might be better… Read more »
And where do you go for independent honest reviews in an age where companies are just sending stuff out to ‘content creators’ in return for positive reviews?
Companies rush product to market without proper playtesting.
‘Content creator’ rush a shill review out just to be first to publish. The amount of ‘reviews’ on YT that are no more than an unboxing without ever playing the game enough to form a proper opinion is laughable.
if you don’t have any reliable source then the official “Let’s play” bits are your next best thing …
And given that we’ve got a ton of games that have been playtested and reviewed to hell and back already … what’s the rush buying new stuff anyway?
I think people should also be honest with themselves and admit that they buy stuff for the shiny and only ever complain if that is what others are doing just so they won’t have to admit that they did not do the research or made a mistake …
I played several games before “the event” last year after getting the boxed set. I really enjoyed those game but I did feel that some of the rules were a little clunky. I’m taking this opportunity to get a few more models and a free rulebook, win win. If I don’t like the new rules I have Clash of Spears for the models.
I do think though that they should have provided an update errata pdf with just the changes for those who’ve already bought into their game, as several other games have done.
Yeah, you all got to pay to be beta testers. Maybe, just maybe, take more time to play test the rules and they would have been better out of the gate.
Ooh the gaul of the French fighting off the Romans.
I never got all the online butt-hurt with 1e. Sure it wasn’t the best thought-through ruleset ever, and Matt Sprange had an arsey attitude when he was challenged about it, but my group managed a good few games and enjoyed them well enough. I guess our group must just be more relaxed than many seem to be. As Gerry says…”rules are there to be broken”! Offering a free copy of 2e if you buy a single box of core troops is as close to giving them away as you can get. Ok freebie pdfs would be moreso, but seriously… if… Read more »
I got the Gaul box “deal”. I am selling the original rules on eBay. Hopefully find someone who prefers the unadulterated original version with room to interpret the main combat rules their own way. (Or a rare person who doesn’t know the original rules were a bit poo)
Warlord needs to realise that good minis don’t make up for a bad set of rules. There are a lot of Ancients rulessets out there conpeting for my hobby time and money and some half-arsed attempt won’t cut it. This game is the reason I want reviews to be compared and contrasted to other games in the same genres. My gaming group encountered issues straight off the bat. By contrast Saga next to nothing, Hail Caesar nothing, Clash of Spears nothing, Lion Rampant almost nothing. There were elements of this game that were looking great but man oh man are… Read more »
I think its a good offer from them but i wont be takingthe up on it, i have ther games now and dont have room for yet another ruleset, they got out before infamy but fell apart, now infamy is my go to game.
The issue isn’t bring out a new version after 2 years, it’s just the the first set were so faulty they were hard to take serious. I was keen at the time, even bought a pdf version in addition, while the box was on order. Wouldn’t go back to this though. Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think Warlord’s models are that good so I don’t see this as a deal in any way.
“scheme” indeed
In a weird way I guess Warlord can take some solace in the terrible response to SPQR 1E because it shows a lot of people are watching & a lot of folks look to Warlord for new product. If SPQR 1E were put out by some small concern then the hobby would have just shrugged, rolled their eyes, and moved on. Warlord have gotten big enough that they are held to a higher standard.
