Warlord Games Dive Into 15mm With Black Powder Epic Battles
December 28, 2020 by brennon
Warlord Games are looking towards a smaller scale with their new Epic Battles line. Black Powder is the first period that is getting this treatment as they march back in time to the American Civil War and look to a clash between the Union and Confederates.
American Civil War // Black Powder Epic Battles
The big new set that was previewed over the Christmas week introduces two large armies for you to play with on the tabletop. The idea is that you are able to enjoy these massive battles but with smaller miniatures, allowing you to set up on a dining table without too much hassle.
American Civil War Starter Set // Black Powder Epic Battles
The Starter Set (pictured above) comes with enough regiments, cannons, commanders and more for you to get going as either the Union or the Confederates. As well as providing you with two large armies of plastic miniatures you'll also get some terrain which you can use to set up defences across the tabletop.
If you pre-order the Starter Set and their Pre-Order Bundle then you will also get exclusive miniatures for Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General George Meade.
Confederate Army // Black Powder Epic Battles
These forces do look pretty darn fun to get stuck into and I think this scale works really well for those that want to play out massive battles. 28mm scale miniatures sure look impressive but they take a long time to paint. At this scale, you could get an army done quickly and onto the tabletop before you know it.
Union Army // Back Powder Epic Battles
The same can be said for the terrain at this scale too. It should be noted that as well as miniatures and terrain present in the Starter Set you can also pick up additional terrain as part of the Epic Battle section of the site. This might be handy if you already have miniatures at this scale or just want to throw a few more bits of cover into the mix for your regiments.

As well as the options for the Starter Set and Pre-Order Bundle you can also pick up some Brigades to enlarge your armies too. There are Brigades for both sides of this conflict which might be an alternative way to dive into the American Civil War for you.

This was a pretty fun new option to see pop up from Warlord Games and it will be fun to see what else they do with the Epic Battles title. Will they be venturing into the Ancient period or sticking to Black Powder and exploring some more of the conflicts from the period?
We shall have to wait and see! Are you tempted to snap up these new miniatures?

Got my preorder in via Wayland on the starter set but picked up the the basic building set so will be revisiting the Gerry Can video on working and painting MDF.
Very excited by this. The starter set looks terrific (2,400+ figures!!!) and I really like the inclusion of the farm house and fences. Very high on my wishlist.
Very nice. ACW is not something I’m interested in but Epic Hail Caesar or Erehwon would be cool.I
I’m painting a 15mm Vampire Count army now. I still need a good ruleset to play those with.
Warlord have talked of future periods with the Napoleonic most likely the next step once the American Civil War is fully supported with everything playable through black powder rule set and a single supplement for conflict to flesh out some of the history and show off the minis I’d guess. The 15mm Vampire Count army sounds like a top project.
There’s been some good discussion on this in the forums. The range is not true 15mm, but 13.5mm, which is a bit disappointing. Having said that, the figures do look good, and Warlord have clearly thought about how to make a game accessible to new players out of the box by making the Union and Confederates from different coloured plastics.
given that the entire industry rarely agrees on the exact scale of the minis they make it’s not a surprise that these are ‘different’
Besides … how many of them have starter sets for new players ?
So do we know why ? Certainly I’m not a die hard historical gamer.. and from what I understand about Black Powder 2.0 (I’ve got 2 games in with it?) it won’t affect game play at all… But seems like an odd choice, eh? Like.. if you are going to tempt people with another scale to play in… then why go off the expected path? Or does 15mm terrain look better against these 13.5mm models? Or will it matter, as like others have said, there is variation between companies and materials either way… just the height of integral bases (or… Read more »
The forums here (https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/warlord-announce-15mm-blackpowder/) I can only speculate that Warlord are trying to lock gamers into their new range. I think the figures do look good, but the 13.5mm size means that it will be challenging to find other ranges to mix and match with, which for me is one of appeals of historics. Yes, there’s variation in 28mm or 15mm figures that means ranges from different manufacturers don’t always look great alongside each other, but 13.5mm seems a very business driven choice.
They are quite slender and short lined up against 15mm figures. They don’t mix very well. I’ve seen pics of them alongside 12mm figures and they look great side by side.
13.5mm rather than 15mm.
Great looking figures for 15mill.
I’ve been waiting for so long to pick up some ACW action.
Now is the time. I’ll have to forget about blood Bowl, then…
I can see lots of people buying these sets with all the good intentions of painting 2000+ figures. I wonder how many will actually get painted?
I put my preorder in and had the 10mins of bliss…then your right I remembered I have 2000+ very small minis to paint and a raft of MDF buildings to construct and part of me thought GULP your going to be a either a busy boy or a guilty muppet. I Might have to start a project here and hope the idea of not finishing within the community pushes me on….on the other hand it’s a big box and every pyramid of shame requires a firm foundation ☺️
While members of my gaming club were discussing a group project for when we can meet again, Warlord’s announcement showed up in my email. “Hey guys look at this.” Now we are debating between Antietam or Gettysburg.
I’m looking forward to this as a stand alone setwithin my collection, and am VERY excited about the possibility of Warlord doing Wterloo later on.
Might be worth pointing out that Warlord are selling a Brigade box for £20, this is 3 sprues. You get one free sprue with the latest copy of Wargames illustrated for £5.25 so you can get a Brigade for £15.75 if you buy three copies and if you do it that way. Of you could scale that up and effectively get yourself two a Brigade starter set for £31.50 if you wanted.
