The New Waterloo Black Powder Starter Set Now Available
October 2, 2018 by brennon
Warlord Games has now released their new Waterloo Two Player Starter Set for those getting stuck into Black Powder 2nd Edition.
The set offers up a selection of British and French Infantry, their Commanders, a contingent of Hanoverian soldiers and of course the artillery which will be booming away in the background.
As well as the models within the set you also get yourself the new Rulebook and supplementary bits and bobs to help you play out the battles of this period, especially this crucial fight which secured the future of Europe.
Whilst, of course, the models here represent the powers that clashed in Europe, you will probably find that this opens up the window of opportunity to fight in different theatres across the continent and even into the Mediterranean.
This looks like a great selection of plastic and metal to be starting out with. I reckon the painting of these models might not even be that tough either, one of the stumbling blocks a lot of people feel concerning this period.
Will you be checking this out?

Seems like a fair amount of goodies for the price (£70 in the UK). I’m certainly adding it to the (already extensive) Christmas list.
This is great value. My first introduction (by way of wistfully watching) to wargaming as a callow youth was Napoleonics…. maybe it is time I scratched that itch.
It’s a great looking set but aren’t those French lads wrapped up a bit for Belgium in June?
They’re meant for Waterloo/100 Days Campaign (as you said) and at that time it was (un-seasonally) pouring rain.

They can also be used for the 1812 Invasion of Russia and they’re so much easier to paint.
Yup. Absolutely peeing it down, knee deep in mud in places and many had little more than a great-coat to sleep in. Night before Waterloo was dreadful, some of the troops at La Haye Sainte tried to smash up and burn the gates to keep warm thinking they’d be moving again in the morning before horrified officers stepped in to rescue them from the flames.
Box seems decent, and I am feeling the draw of the game. However, I would prefer hardback rules and would probably look more to the pennisula campaign bits.
Not sure about the asymmetric forces (harder for a new player to Napoleonics to get a handle on), and yup I’d want the French in dress uniforms (rather than greatcoats) as the British lace is the hardest thing to paint in this box set.
I preferred having the French in greatcoats actually since they are easier to paint. This is by no means an easy or “beginner” set when it comes to painting since both the British and Hanoverian take quite a lot of time to paint.
The best way to get into Black Powder imo is the Perry ACW starter set (although it doesn’t include the rulebook). The forces are symmetric (as you point out) and being ACW the models are super quick to paint. That was at least the set that hooked me and then I moved from there into Napoleonics.
I can second that. Some of the ACW sculpts are looking a bit dated but they are incredibly easy to paint (zouaves are a bit more of a challenge but they look sweet, love a dash of colour!)
I bought the the first Black Powder starting set and I couldn’t be happier! Great content and amazing value for money. The rulebook itself didn’t suffer much from the A5 format and is crammed with anecdotes and beautiful imagery so I often find myself flicking through it for hobby inspiration alone. I would have preferred that the new starter set had different models allowing those who bought the first one to also buy the second (including the new rules) while still allowing for newcomers to get a good starting point. Basically there could still be the same amount of cavalry,… Read more »
Those look good and there are lot of them for that price.
Great starter set, but I’ve a mountain of 20mm to paint so will have to pass, for the time being. Give it till Christmas maybe. Muhuhahehahehaaa!
A friend and I are looking to split this, are the models just the regular guys as shown without the metal leader/standard/musician like the plastic boxed set has?
