My Girlfriends always telling me off for being premature… but I can tell this thing is gunna look AWESOME!!!!
Looks awesome, dunno if using some panel pins would be quicker than gluing for assembling the modules?
Also would bamboo cane work as well as 10mm pine?
As you could just take a sanding drum to it to create mortices then its a simple glue and elastic band job to get a joint.
Finally are you going to have any of the piles (or legs dunno which is right) proud of the decking, sort of thing you would tie a boat to…
Panel Pins might be
Not sure about bamboo, doesn’t fit the feel of this particular look Im hoping for
Im going to start simple with the modules, then maybe do a couple more sets where I experiment with slightly more advanced (ie time consuming) options 🙂
a staple gun can do panel pins instantly?
That looks so cool, even if age of sigmarines turns out to be a dung heap rules wise, that would work awesome with Mordheim!
Or Malifaux! I’d love to play on this board!
I just struggle to see some 10piece groups of warriors Walk through this possibly narrow board. But nontheless, I seems to turn out awesome!
This is going to become a great table!
Coming along faster than I expected. Good job.
We don’t **** around here at BoW HQ 😉
Once you’ve finished with John can you box him up and post him to me, have a few projects I could use him on.
That has to go on a t-shirt as the BoW team slogan….. 😉 😀 .
I really like the modular design. Well done! How are you going to do stairs? I’m assuming there has to be a way between levels.
I may not even bother and just allow you to travel up and down levels that are no more than 30mm
Keep it Simple
It would be keeping it simple but I think you might end up feeling it ruins the overall immersion of the table! It seems wrong to go through with such a cool table to have it not be as cool as it can be because of a simple (Yeah…ok….) set of stairs! We trust in you, @Warzan ! Make us some stairs/ramps! Afterall, to quote one of the worlds most foremost thinkers:
“We don’t **** around here at BoW HQ :P”
Let me see what I can do, as the project continues – I try to work on the basis of not letting too many ideas flood in until I have the basics (not basic per se but important bits, or the bulk) sorted out 🙂
Wise man! Keep it simple. Little fiddly bits and add-ons can easily come later. You’ve got a bunch of minds working on the extras.
With a 30mm step, a few 10mm pieces can easily go up 10mm, up 20mm to form a simple set of steps.
coffee stirrer ladders 🙂 simple and easy
Would have thought coffee stirrers would make ramps v easily, or with some matches make a ladder?, maybe you should have a plank to walk as well, under the watch towers privvy, jump into the filth or await your punishment…
Ramps and ladders sound like a good idea. Hopefully nice and simple and they add a few more options. At a quick glance of the rules for age of sigmar climbing appears to just be a matter of moving vertically where necessarily.
The real question is whether there are going to be boats!
ladders?
As if by magic, a day later and its all starting to come together. Can’t wait to see this one progress.
My instant thought was “Why not do 30, 60 and 90mm?” but think your way works best.
Definitely needs some movable 30mm and 60mm “steps” for people to get up. Could be ramps, stairs, ladders or even piles of crates and barrels.
“Tall and lanky”
You rang?
Not sure if this has been posted i’ve been working pretty intensely last two weeks. But if you pick up White Dwarf tomorrow aside from the rules for Sigmar you also get a free mini from the set (and a nice one at that!)
So it’s a good week to get down to a Warhammer/Games Workshop store if one is near you, or order one online.
The 120mm especially looks quite plain and I know it’s early days. Some diagonal struts supporting the legs would be good. Liked nakchaks suggestion of piles coming above the decking. Keep it up guys.
Nice work Warren! How about Venice-style bridges connecting sections of the town? Also are you planning on a “town square” section with sparse terrain?
Holy crap; I had no idea you were moving at such a pace! looks good!
You guys are quick!
They are a bit lanky. Are you going to add any lagging details or other supports? It seems to me that one good wave and some of the taller areas would crumple.
I think this is gonna look fantastic!
Why don’t you use 4 pieces of dowel for the top square and then 20mm pieces for the legs(30mm version) same for 60/120mm, would save a lot of gluing time. Unless I’m missing something?
If you want to give the wood a texture scrape it with a hard wire brush, gives a nice grain effect.
Looking forward to the next update:)
Wire brush is definitely added to the list, nice suggestion!
This is coming together nicely, the modular design looks like it works really well.
I do think it needs some kind of simple ramp or steps between the levels, you could even use the coffee stirs (if you have enough) to make a simple wood slat staircase.
Looks like a great start. Will the table start with the slums at the lowest point and the town hall/important building on a higher tier in the middle so you will be able to access everything or have a random height change over the tables area? @warzan does the 4ground glue dry clear? With the fights possibly going inside buildings and you lifting the layers it may be worth using some of those small velcro pads from B & Q on the corners of the base layers of the 4ground buildings in case someone has a clumsy moment. Or did… Read more »
With it being modular I can lay it out in pretty much anyway we want 🙂
My first thought aside from “I didn’t think it would look that good this quick” was I’d knock together a 30mm walkway crossing under a 120mm walkway and or 60mm, are you still going to do the small corner pieces to join walkways round corners and such?
with it being lake town, are you planning on using some of the 30mm walkways as docks as well, and then including some boats? Then maybe including in your games a mechanic that allows models to come in from reserves, kind of like 40k does?
Will you have deck sections on some of the 120mm sections at 60 or 30 as well to create underpasses?
That was quick….
Am I the only one worried about the holding strength of the glue? Especially on those tall pieces, the leverage on those joints is going to be pretty high. Maybe some staples to add some strength? Just my 2 cents.
Diagonal bracing would be good, you could use coffee stirrers, snip them size with wire cutters and they look a bit weather worn, also adds character. A quick way to hold a finished set up together would be doubled up elastic bands wrapped around the legs, as they would look like lashings from a distance, especially if you could find off white, or brown ones.
Great concept I get the feeling there’s going to be a few lake towns being built very soon. Better get down to the hardware store and get some 10mm dowel before it’s out of stock.
Coming together ace Warzan again very quickly. I have made my supports etc from laminating the same sticks you have as funds don’t run to 10mm square dowel so dramatically slower. I am also using a product a good friend gave me, I will get the name of it next time I see them, for the nail and coach bolt heads. Also designed some one way bridges so if you can, you’re able to stop someone following or trap them in a section. really enjoying this, pictures to follow. Plus our table may be less modular as it is not… Read more »
Yes not long now for Frostgrave. I can’t wait either. There’s an article in this months Wargame Illustrated to get you more excited. I like Warrens suggestion for Saga as well. I can picture a Longship tied up at one of the jetty’s. It would make a great setting for a pirate game.
my concern about this is gamer knock-age, for example reaching over the table to pick up a mini, and accidentally hitting a building, how secure is it going to be as I wouldn’t want one of those lovely 4 ground building being damaged
and another thought, what about access to higher levels, ramps or stairs?
