Kislev & Grand Cathay Coming To Total War: Warhammer III!
February 4, 2021 by brennon
Creative Assembly this week got people very excited about the next instalment for Total War: Warhammer. The third game in the series is going to be taking things to the snow-covered North of The Old World and further afield for Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
Total War: Warhammer III Trailer
The trailer lets us get a look at the Ice Queen herself getting ready for battle and using her power to hold off the ruinous powers of Chaos. You can check out a few screenshots from the trailer down below...

As well as the army of Kislev which is going to be resplendent with Winged Hussars and Bear Cavalry, we're also going to be seeing the Daemons Of Chaos getting added into the mix in greater numbers with the ability to bring foul creatures and monstrous Greater Daemons to the battlefield.

The big reveal towards the end of the trailer was the tease that Grand Cathay, the Dragon Empire, is going to be coming to Total War: Warhammer III. This is going to be the first real opportunity for the team at Creative Assembly AND Games Workshop to look beyond the traditional scope of The Old World and bring a new army into the mix.

It is going to be fascinating seeing how this army looks when it comes to the game. I would imagine that we're going to be seeing a lot of that Ancient/Medieval Chinese influence flowing through into the designs, adding lots of firearms, spears, cannons and of course dragons.
This should then translate over into the tabletop game for The Old World which is still in development behind closed doors. So, a Kislevite army and Cathay coming to Total War with the prospect of both of these armies being joined by a familiar line-up when The Old World re-launches. It all sounds very cool indeed.
Are you going to be downloading Total War: Warhammer III when it drops?

I admit it I would like to filed a massive unit of Kislev lancers without having to take out a second mortgage and would be great to learn more about Grand Cathay and see some of the units. I miss the old world.
Kislev were always my favourites and I’m got a stack of the Kislevite Warmaster minis painted. I may be wrong but I don’t think we have ever seen an official representation of a charater from Cathay which makes this version of the game very exciting for us Old World fans.
Does this give us any hints about the direction that the new miniatures range will take when we eventually get to see it?
There has been a hint to Cathay in a book but apart from that, nothing. This is pretty much entirely new for Games Workshop when it comes to armies for The Old World.
Ooh shiny new graphics it’s looking to be a great game?
Cannot wait… I’ve loved the whole series, its not perfect but game 3 promises massive changes to seiges which is possibly the biggest complaint currently… I’m looking forwards to the giant multi map version, that’s what I’ve been waiting for since the start and I only play Mortal Empires currently. They’ve given so much life into this game, its expensive but the flavour and feel of all the factions is fantastic. I’m hoping we’ll not only see a Chaos Invasion End game scenario but also a rise of Nagash one,for the big multi map experience… I’m interested to see Cathay,… Read more »
Loving every minute! Fleshing out, reimagining factions like Kislev has really got me going. Really like the new Kislevite aesthetic on the infantry and the bears look fab, for ages I’ve thought about kitbashing frostgrave soldiers with the barbarians sprues to make Kislevites and it seems SEGA has beaten me to it! Daemons, Chaos Dwarfs, CATHAY FFS!!! Just need Nippon and my Old World fantasies will come true.
Be so incredibly awesome if the Dragon Emperor of Cathay you know, actually is a Dragon…
Having played every Total War title, the Warhammer ones just leave me cold. It’s amusing that they have taken a game format based originslly on board game (Shogun) and made it to cover another tabletop game. I wonder if they could reskin Shogun the board game to be Warhammer?
I imagine this signal things to come for The Old World system from GW. Rumor said it might focus on human subfactions and GW showed concept art for Kislev late last year.
