There Be Dracoths Coming To The World Of Age Of Sigmar
March 12, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop are now welcoming the Dracothian Guard to the world of Age of Sigmar alongside a new Lord-Celestant model and an additional Battletome called Stormcast Eternals: Extremis. I can't help but say that without a bit of a skater tone to my voice. The next one will surely be Radicalus!
Dracothian Heroes
Leading the way we have the Lord-Celestant on Dracoth model which allows you to now make your own hero and not have to rely on the one from the Starter Set. He comes with options to give him a stormglaive, a volleystorm crossbow, lightning hammer or thunderaxe.
As I mentioned during the week I don't mind these models but they seem to take away from my vision of how the Stormcast Eternals were being represented. The idea was to have them as these avenging angels travelling on bolts of lightning and now they also have Dracoth to ride? Seems like just giving them something new for the sake of it.
On top of the Lord-Cerlestant we also have a new Knight Heraldor model who will be calling the other warriors to battle.
I do think this chap is looking rather heroic and while he is suffering from foot-on-rock syndrome he looks the part with his sword held high and the battle-horn ready to blow. I do quite like the aesthetic of the Stormcast Eternals as a whole, just not in blue and gold.
Dracothian Guard
As well as the Lord Celestant of course we have the actual unit that will be riding into battle alongside him. The Dracothian Guard are a unit of these dragon riding warriors who can be armed in a similar way to the Lord.
I really like this last alternative paint scheme that we see in this last model adding a lot of jade and colder colours to the pallet. I think it paints (quite literally) the Stormcast in a bit of a different light and looks a lot more interesting.
One person commented that it would be good to have actually seen Elves mounted on Dracoths for Age of Sigmar - the natural evolution of the Dragon Princes.
Stormcast Eternal: Extremis
Lastly we have the book that accompanies this release...
"Descending from darkened, riven skies on startlingly powerful Stardrakes, thundering forward toward the battle lines on vengeful Dracoths, the Extremis Chamber of the Stormcast Eternals approaches to make war. The heavy cavalry of the heavens, this is the ultimate expression of the power of the god-king Sigmar – an incredible display of celestial might designed to take down the most hideously brutal creatures of Chaos, reclaiming the mortal realms for Order.
Created from the most indomitable Stormcast Eternals, and aided in their creation by Dracothion himself, the Extremis Chambers are an unstoppable spear-thrust, shattering the armour of Chaos and posing a true challenge to the grip of the Dark Gods."
It also revealed this particular model, the Stardrake. This is a huge dragon kit that is coming down the line for the Stormcast Eternals and while it looks alright - maybe a bit too much?
Will you be investing in these Dracothian Guards as a different element of the Stormcast Eternals army?
Drop your thoughts below!

It’s all getting a bit silly isn’t it
It was already silly. This is just silly icing on the silly cake.
A dracoth rearing on its hind legs might look awesome but instead we get the limp wristed version. I swear our tiny pussy cat looks more threatening when it’s annoyed than these war beasts
Very much agree … instead of the end times … it is now just the sad, sad, silly times …
I think it’s a shame the dracoth are cast with the armour on, I was hopeful that they could have been beast + armour, as I thought it would make a good thunderwolf with a bit of green stuff. I thing having to rebuild limbs chest and back would go well beyon my green stuff skills
I think you’re right, I think the armour is very jaring and very toy-like. Reminds me of Dino-riders. They aren’t subtle like previous pre-AoS models. I think if they cut back the beastal nature of the models a little and dropped the armour (they have scales ffs) they would be perfectly fine.
I’m more interested in the big dragon.
I’m not keen on the big axes but there’s obviously options. And I love the round Shields. Quite liking these Stormcasts.
480 swedish for two of these .. get stuffed tbh :p start connecting
That big dragon is so much better and lot less silly than those little dragons.
I think they might look a bit less childish with the right paint scheme but I might be kidding myself quite frankly as I said the same about those stupid new dwarfs they released. They remind me of dino-riders, there is nothing gritty about these models at all. No grim-dark at all. They got rid of the Tomb Kings for this shite? Shame. Shame. Shame. But on the PLUS side, £40 for two models, so £13 a sprue? Disgusted at GW that yet again these pretend premium models have no means of articulation, they’re all mono pose models. Disgusting –… Read more »
“Dracoths can spit devastating
bolts of lightning which blast open amid
the enemy ranks, leaving warriors maimed
and reeling. ”
Gameworkshop, stop beclowning yourself.
OMG. They’re getting their writers from the same place as their sculptors.
More stunning Playmobil figures. That dragon thingie should have rockers under it.
And why are they all so chubby?
I love hyperbole as much as anyone else but I’m really not seeing the playmobil comparison here. I even went to check out the playmobil site (I was curious!) and…
http://www.playmobil.co.uk/shield-dragon/5484.html?cgid=Drachenland&showSpareParts=false#start=10
I’ll give you points for the colour scheme, at least that sort of resembles it… a bit? xD
omg I thought I was being hyperbolic … until you showed me that pic !!!
Nailed it @dice ! 🙂
The more you look at the Dracoth’s the more that armour plate sticks in your face. The Stardrake is quite dreadful,
Well, I have the Dracoth from the intro box, and they look much better irl. I love them.
And that dragon is glorious.
I think the dragon looks rather awkward in this picture because of the angle it was taken at. It will be interesting to see it from other angles, and especially in the full rotation images when they come out. Overall, I think that the colour scheme is again perhaps not really helping these models. I know what GW is going for – the golden, shining angelic host literally glowing with divine power, like Tyrael from the Diablo games – and while that works fine in the artwork depicting the Stormcast, I don’t think it comes off as well in model… Read more »
I wasn’t going to comment on this one as I’d said all I needed to say on the last news item. That was until I saw today’s GW email with a Dracoth emerging through a circle like Porky Pig announcing “That’s all folks!”
These guys look like they’ve been ripped straight out of a South Korean MMO game, dunno if that’s a bad thing or not (not necessarily!) but it just ain’t for moi! 🙁
Yes. I’d go further and just say that there’s a strong anime feel to these. But not the good anime. Not Shirow or anything awesome like that.
This seems to be taking it’s cue from the Final Fantasy (“Physics? What’s that? Never heard of it!”) part of anime that I’m just not that crazy about. Big swords! Big hair! Big dragons! NO SUBTLETY!
I think they’re nice and detailed, but I have a hard time taking them seriously enough to get emotionally invested.
I’ll wait to see the 360 view of that dragon before I judge it but something looks very odd about its front leg.
I do like the dragon-horsies, except for the armor. Will easily fit with any GW horse ever made with how implausible they are.
The Dragon looks like a badly posed action figure
To be honest, I’m not that surprised with this release as the starter box set has the leader on one of them dino things. It would look weirder if he really was the only one with a dragon horse thingy. This at least gives you the option to kit your hero in the gear options that is in the war scroll.
Is this $90 worth of model goodness? No, not really… passing once more on models that I do like, but can’t justify buying.
If just one of the mounts had its mouth closed, a whole wealth of class would be achieved. The gaping dumb amusement face they all carry is really not doing anything for them
Umm. I mean I agree. But how could they actually close their mouth with non-anatomically possible gigantic teeth (even by fantastical dragon … horse … thingy … standards) …
Just adds to the merry-go-round motif.
According to the lore the Dracoths are always ready to lighten up a bloody battle with their hearty laughter, which i think is presented very nicely on these models.
They don’t look terribly mobile. With all that armour, how are the riders going to hit anything that approaches them from shield-side? I don’t know, they’re nice. But not for me.
They remind me of Battle Beasts. They just need holograms on their wings.
No wait, that’s unfair. They’re great sculpts. Just not very dynamic.
Not a fan having looked at them more. BUT the conversion potential is awesome.
Warscrolls say they talk like Donkey in Shrek
Donkey married a Dragon and had Dragon-Donkey offspring so this origin is possible 🙂
Is this preparing us for an upcoming disney buy up? :p Shreks realm could easily exist in the current fluff so it does make sense .. cant wait
Wow people this hatred towards AoS is really getting be childish for me I’m glad GW changed WHF it was the same shit over an over every year and the cost of starting a new army is alittle cheaper now, I can do a mass battle with AoS in more than half the time then before and I don’t have to spend hours writing up an army list for going against every army in the game, instead of taking 6 hours to play one battle I can do 6 Battle’s in 6 hours or less, now for the new models… Read more »
High five!
even if the rules have been over simplified; it’s not so much as the rules here as the cheesy models and fluff. GW could have done a skirmish version of the game without such a radical stylistic change. I haven’t seen any model I like in AoS and the fluff is nowhere near what I look for in a fantasy setting.
This a 1000 times!
have been thinking along this line as well … very much agree
Amen I really enjoy AOS it’s a great game half the people who trash it have probably never played it once you get into it the scenarios and warscroll add so much character and depth but each to his own , but your right the BOW community in general is very anti GW especially AOS but it’s the same people commenting most of the time they obviously have an axe to grind
The BoW community is pro-Warhammer universe. And very pro-GW in terms of the amount of love they have for what GW has done in the past. They don’t like seeing Warhammer being destroyed in front of them that is why they rage. Had the Warhammer world not been destroyed and GW released the AoS rules alongside a 9th edition ruleset, or just allowed you to continue playing 8th I think people would have been fine. GW made some very obvious mistakes and those who pointed these errors out were called “haters” blah blah blah. Well, AoS has failed to sell… Read more »
Yeah, you keep telling yourself that.
Uncalled for 🙁
I’ve never found anything compelling in GW’s games, but that is a personal preference. I just like more complex games that suspend disbelief, and if it takes a few hours of set-up time to simulate that ‘realism’ (if I could use that term in a fantasy setting), so be it. Don’t confuse hate with frustration, which is what you’re seeing from those who remember GW’s glory days. When I look at my wood elf models, or my 400-figure high elf army, it’s hard to imagine it’s the same company that’s now producing this tween trash for obscene prices, and expecting… Read more »
Right on.
In my case it’s more about GW failing to get me care about AoS after destroying WHF for it than anything else and these models don’t help either. Which is why I took option of taking my GW undead to KoW so I can use those as undead in that system.
Tween trash?
Thanks for that.
Reading coments about GW on BoW, makes me happy I am not part of the GW hate group.
It seems all the negative, vitriolic neckbeards have left the GW part of the hobby.
You need a big thumbs up for that, as it means it is a much nicer hobby now.
I called the models ‘tween trash’ @nosebiter, not the people who buy them. While any such observations are subjective, I’m entitled to that opinion… without you responding with a personal attack against those who have left AoS, and even GW, behind. That’s just bad form.
If it makes any difference, I like the AoS setting and lore as well as the models (which exists just fine alongside my enjoyment of the Old Hammer setting – I don’t see any conflict in that), but I also fully understand the frustration of people who don’t like the changes and are having trouble – or simply can’t – make the transition into the new fiction. While cpauls1’s description of the game can on the face of it seem a little blunt, I at no point thought he was describing the people who enjoy AoS, and so I don’t… Read more »
seeing as lots of systems are getting more mainstream and more advanced (but no less playable) i hope its only a question of time before GW has to more strategicaly stimulating mechanics into 40k. Im sure people can argue it has strategy but it doesnt goddamn matter because of how random and abstract the rules are. All forms of logic has been thrown out just to keep it simple as well and its looking really old compared to what else is out there.
Prerfectly called for imo.
Excellent post! I completely agree with you. I will likely pick these models up also.
I actually really like these but I’m a complete AOS fanboy and proud of it I love my storm casts and ill be adding these to my collection they look amazing and the star drake wow can’t wait to get that bad boy I was hoping for a large monster release. Roll on Saturday
More power to you, I say! 🙂
Truthfully dalzzor, I enjoy the AoS setting and universe as well, and the Stormcast are my second favourite faction (just behind the Undead, who will always be my first Warhammer love). I can accept other people’s judgments on the matter, and fully respect their right to believe whatever they choose, but if I am honest the fact remains that none of it dents my enthusiasm for a divine host of the Celestial Realm. Indeed, as soon as I get a look at the rules for the Star Drake and a better angle on the model, I will need to consider… Read more »
@vetruviangeek If you’re determined to buy these, the dragon thingy in the starter set is cheap as chips on Ebay, and looks much better.
Thanks for the tip @cpauls1, I’ll bear that in mind.
