Creative Assembly Accidentally Announce Total War: Warhammer
January 14, 2015 by brennon
So it looks like we're definitely getting ourselves a Total War: Warhammer game. No spin-off series, no Total Warrior action game sideline project, a full on Total War game set in the Warhammer Fantasy world. How do we know? Early copies of Creative Assembly's new Art of Total War book got into the wilderness and one line of text spoiled the whole thing...
Not the most exciting way to find out about this future project being worked on by a new team within the studio but it does raise some questions for us as lovers of the Old World.
With the way things are going in the Old World are we going to see Creative Assembly wait until the new edition of the tabletop game and then develop a game based on this? Or, will it do what Mark of Chaos did and take an alternative history look at the Old World and use the tried and tested background we all know about?
Considering the scope and scale of Total War games I can't see it being in line with the new 'skirmish' angle that Games Workshop are going for. I think people would prefer to see their big armies on the screen rather than smaller warbands.
Would you play it?

Best…news…ever…can’t… find…words !!!!!!!!
Am I reading it wrong when it says they’re putting most – if not all – of their efforts into multiplayer? I hope I’m wrong because I have no interest in playing disjointed games against random people. If this is a true Total War campaign with Warhammer then I will do a wee though. As long as they stop the infinite full stack army generation that the AI can do in Rome 2. I swear I was fighting the same battle in the same city every turn for about 20 turns or more. Every turn the enemy faction next door… Read more »
I would hope that they’re focusing on a Grand Campaign as normal with Total War: Warhammer but considering that Warhammer Fantasy Battles is a multiplayer game on the tabletop it will be interesting to see what the focus is on bringing that ‘spirit’ to life in digital form.
Multiplayer campaigns, multiplayer battles etc.

Singleplayer has always been strenght of the Total War series so I hope they won’t skip with that for multiplayer. If they do I have no reason to buy this game.
Now I’ve calmed down I’m thinking exactly the same thing. Just the sheer prospect of a grand TW warhammer makes me giddy. Please be good (both game and AI).
A Total War: Warhammer game would definitely have huge potential. The make or break factor will be how well Creative Assembly understands the franchise.
this is the word i have ” WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh” there done
I have never played the Total War games, but hearing this I’m thinking maybe I should. I actually liked the Mark of Chaos game, though it didn’t give me everything I wanted from a Warhammer Fantasy strategy game. I am very hopeful for this. And no doubt the Lizards will turn up in an expansion at some point.
If you do, get Shogun 2 or the original Rome total war (Not Rome 2), they are the best in the series and really show what total war is capable of.
Alot of 40k games that are out there, have littel to do with 40k except space marines.
This will be a standard Total War game, reskinned for warhammer.
I just hope it will be better then their last game, that was a disaster upon its release.
Is this not incredibly bad timing if the rumours are true that Warhammer is moving from a less unity game to a more skirmishy one?
Sounds great though, years and years ago I enjoyed the delights of ‘Shadow of the Horned Rat’ etc… so Its been a really long time coming.
I’d love a total war game or Fantasy, after all i there’s any game series which a warhammer fantasy video game is suited for, its fantasy. i just hope we get some massive improvements form the last game, and a better engine (please get a better engine)
I haven’t played the Total War series since the first “Medieval” game… Had a blast back there, as far as I can remember. But for me there’s something not quite right in making PC games based on WFB. For some reason 40K on the screen looks good to me, but WFB does not.
They actually announced their intent to do a Warhammer game in 2012.

Anything in regards to the gameplay will be modeled on WFB as it was then until now, is my guess.
They were hiring people last year for this project. Its been at least six months in development. Though they have been intending to do it since, as you said, 2012.
I made a post on it 6 months ago, straight after they filled their Warhammer consultant position.

Looking forward to hearing ‘VICTORY! THE DAY IS OURS!’ said by Queek Headtaker 🙂
Get medieval total war II it was one of the best ones made plus shotgun II and the first Rome.
Don’t buy it, whole weekends will disappear, you’ll slowly turn into a Gollum unable to think of anything but your precious campaign.
Lol. When I first played Shogun I ended up with 6 weeks worth of rubbish in my kitchen. Rather than just clean the kitchen I bought flypaper on the way home from work because it was less time away from “the campaign”.
I’m of course fully rehabilitated now, I’m sure that a new version of one of my favourite games of all time in one of my favourite universes of all time won’t cause me to relapse at all……
I wonder at the timing of this. Ummm … like what universe is this going to be set in? Because the WHFB universe is about to get burnt down. I’m assuming it will be set in the former WHFB universe not the post end times one? At this point I’m sure GW is just all to anxious to get their license fees from video games back up to where the used to be so I’m sure they’ll accommodate. I do love the total war games so a WHFB total war title … finally .. would be pretty cool indeed!
Which of the Total War games had the warhammer mod available?
For any Mount And blade Warband fanatics, there was the Warsword Conquest mod for that.
Well, bang goes my life! I’ve managed to avoid the evils of computer gaming since Medieval total war.
wow this is amazing i love total wars stuff!
I really hope this turns out great, my only question is how will the Hero’s/Lords work. Will they be on the field of battle or the off screen general. Instead of a unit of Heavy cav plus general will it be one powerful character?
long time in the making!!! remember when some of the development stuff was coming out for Empire Total War (god, must be 5 yrs ago now) there was an accidental screen shot of one of the office computers, zoom in and it had a folder titled ‘Warhammer’ – fingers crossed they’ve put some serious thought into this one, and more importantly, they don’t skimp on the polish like they did with Rome 2… Only downside is that I can see them siphoning off so, so much for DLC – could very easily see it being a release game with maybe… Read more »
Heck, time to build a pc when the “what you’ll need to run this looking nice is…”
Not really a news, I remember reading this about 6 month ago and being rather underwhelmed. It’s great to get some Warhammer love from a leading game company though. I enjoyed Mark of Chaos and at the time had wished they’d continue the series. On Total War, I enjoy the strategic map but find tactical battles rather poor. The AI is less than great at best, pacing feels wrong to me too and more often than not the fight looks like a big mess of units colliding where it is hard to tell what is going on. But for me… Read more »
on the AI point of view, it’s never really improved since Rome 1 – the strategic maps are great, most of the time it’s a case of reading the ground and properly timing a charge (much like real life!) Easily taken down armies 3 times the size of my own just through carefully picking my ground and having built the right mix of troops to begin with What scares and excites me most is Magic. Artillery is cool. Don’t get me wrong. But magic will either be entirely useless or be overpowered to b*ggery, just hope they get it right…… Read more »
oh the irony with the mutter from the gutter on the forth coming 9th Ed
I think the biggest questions are 1. When will is be released? 2. If its release post ‘End Times’ Will is the the Warhammer world we knew or the Warhammer world as it will be.. It is set either end times or post end times, sorry really not interested.
