New Covers & Details On Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play 4th Edition Surface
November 30, 2017 by brennon
Designed by Ralph Horsley, the newest covers for the 4th Edition of Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play have popped up online from Cubicle 7 as well as some additional information on the release too!
There will be a Main Rulebook and a Starter Set released for the game around the middle of 2018. Each of them will feature rules akin to the older 2nd Edition of the game that won over so many people into its grim world of perilous adventure.
Both of these new books sound fantastic and it's great to hear that Cubicle 7 have been pooling a lot of the community feedback and ideas, as well as their own thoughts, into this new version of the game.
It will be fantastic to get stuck back into The Old World and adventure as Rat Catchers once again!
Will you be checking this out when it releases?

The cover art of the rulebook mainly reminds me of how great the original cover art was.
it was a classic, I ended up with a second paperback edition when I’d realised I’d left my hardback at home before a game in another town. Leading to the unlikely scene of me running into a comic shop and exclaiming “roleplaying emergency I need a copy of WFRP now!” before chucking cash at Jonny and running off with a back up copy.
I don’t seem to have as many of those these days.
Don’t have as many backup copies or scenes in comic book stores?
bit of both, either I’ve become better organised as I’ve grown older or I have paid better attention to what I already own…although I have doubled up on an embarrassing number of CoC books 😉
Well causing a scene in public is something that apparently happens more the older you get so if start spending time in comic book stores eventually it’s bound to happen. So some to look forward to I guess
It is a nice homage, although the lass in the centre looks a damn sight less happy than the origina bloke. (I still remember his idiot grin)
Nice new version with definate homage to the old, both covers are fantastic.
It is a little bit strange that Fantasy does not exist as a main miniature game officially yet a lot of products about Fantasy are coming togheter.
Yipee, I hope Fantasy makes a full comeback really soon.
IMHO AOS was a huge mistake, and they killed off most of my favourite characters and propagated nonsensical blasphemies such as the Dark Elves getting together with the High Elves and joining the forces of “order” (that one still makes me angry!).
you are right to be angry, it goes against everything that bitter civil war was fought over for millennia.
Pfft Elves they’ll change their loyalty as often as they change their underpants . NEVER TRUST AN ELF !!!!!
It was a badly handled, ham fisted way of doing it, but something had to be done to get some new players/buyers into the game. Agree with you about the unified elfs though, fingers crossed a few of the grand alliances fracture soon, even if i can understand the marketing decision FLY ON THE WALL of the marketing covern Soulless marketing minion #1: Yes there may be decades of fluff saying they are polar opposite, but we could increase sales by saying all pointy eared little men are on the same side Soulless marketing minion #2: Yes! that way little… Read more »
I was sad to see The Old World go, but am happy to see the new setting arrive. They’re very different but I think that the new setting has a much greater scope and potential than the Old World.
This game is still set in the old world, the new game is SIGMARRRRRR!!!!
@Darthcheese.
The studio, Cubicle 7, are making an RPG set in each; one is a remake of WHFRP (mostly updated 2nd edition) and another version is set in Age of Sigmar.
@natchak which could have been done without destroying the setting, change it certainly but no need to destroy. Particularly to then replace it with a souless setting that fails to exploit the’freedom’ offered by writting in all the oldfactions and largely being too timid with the new.
End times I believe was studio not bl, and to be fair first 2 where actually tolerable. 4 and 5 the literary equivilent of a shart
The Dark Elves were always quite orderly. Absolute cnuts but orderly none the less. I would have pegged them as Lawful Evil in D&D currency, a contrast to D&D’s Chaotic Evil dark elves.
The cover is a great homage to the first edition. I have copies of the 2nd and third editions so I am not sure if I’ll pick up this one. Although I am sorely tempted.
This is good news. I never got chance to play any of previous editions of WHF RPG but I always wanted granted that I could find group that played those instead of DnD or Pathfinder or any other more popular fantasy RPG.
Colour me interested
I’m steadily building up my collection of all the 2nd ed rule books and source books (only three to go, but they may require I sell a kidney or one of the children, to have the funds….). So I’m not sure I’d buy into 4th ed, but I’m always happy to see anything whfrp shaped, it’s one of those systems that lets me relive my early roleplay experiences.
If anyone is willing to pay good money for a kidney or a small disobedient semi-feral child, pm me….
I’m interested. I’m really impressed with Cubicle 7’s ‘the One Ring’ Middle Earth RPG, so I hope they do something good with this too. I hope they don’t go back to 2nd Edition for rules inspiration too closely though. I’d like a game that captures the mood and tone and feel, but with modern rules. A bit more narrative rather than focussed on too many % stat increases and modifiers. Plus some really exciting rules that capture one or more things which are iconic to the setting. Like the Madness Meters in Unknown Armies. I look forward to finding out… Read more »
Been tempted to look at one ring, does it have any bearing on earliermiddle earth role plays?
@dags I don’t know as I’ve never played or owned any other middle earth RPGs but I suspect not.
One of the things I like about the one ring is how they seem not to have just ‘Tolkien-ised’ traditional role playing mechanics and creatures but designed the game around themes Tolkien fans will recognise. So fellowship, travel, song and heroism are what it’s about. The art is also fantastic throughout. You really have to see it.
Thanks @angelicdespot that sounds like it has counter my exact issues with the merp/decipher one where setting is incidental rather than integral. May have to pick it up and try. Is there any recommendationsvyou would make to start?
@dags the range is quite substantial now – around 12 books I guess. I have all of them (I think), but haven’t read them all. I think I’d start with the main core book. It’s all a gaming group would need to get started (i.e. no seperate books for GMs, players, settings, etc.). That book is very, very atmospheric, comes with dice and a couple of maps, and covers character creation, games mastering and story telling, including mechanics which are really integral to the game. So there’s a section on overland travel and on ‘downtime’ where you rest and recuperate… Read more »
Thanks again @angelicdespot I think I’ll add the core book and tales of wilderland to the post xmas shopping list. Agree it is a great area to explore, diverse, lots of story and an active part in the war of the ring
never played this was it good?
Yes, yes it was. Well at least 1st and 2nd ed was, never played 3rd as it was totally different.
Fantastic, both editions for slightly different reasons.
may be worth a gander then.
Well I still have the 2nd edition paperback version and all my old characters in a file. Why do I need anew version?
This Old World seems a terrific setting! I really hope GW do some more games set in this world.
Like a tabletop wargame with units in ranks? 😉
that’s a great idea, ranks and flanks forever. Makes far more sense than skirmish for that era of weaponry I feel. You should email gee dub and suggest it ^^
Oddly did on their survey
Not sure that I will replace my second ed but feels very faithful to the source material and has my interest, many many hundreds of hours of fun.
Game. On. http://cubicle7.co.uk/more-warhammer-news-first-edition-and-the-enemy-within/ .
Greame Davis soooooo cool, he has written some my favourite adventures. Rough night at three feathers being the gem
Still happy with 1st Edition AD&D! 🙂 We just changed what we didn’t like.
Well you wouldn’t be happy with 4th Edition D&D … that came damn near killing the company and Role-Playing for me in general
But it had Dark sun material, hence remains on my shelf.
yes that was probably one of it’s better aspects … the support for other worlds (Dark Sun being a goodie … who doesn’t love cannibal halflings……… I wish that level of support exixted now and no I’m not talking about licensed products……which seems to be Hasbro/WotC current MO )
I still have all the Forgotten Realms supplements for 1sr Edition somewhere. Got a lot of roleplaying miles out of those books!
@beardragon14 spot on cannibal halfling bard, by bard read fancily dressed (for nomadic savage) assassin. Also loved in some settings you are thrilled when it’s magically in that you where stunned when it is metal. @cspauls1 forgotten realms is another good one, more high magic then I tend to like, got all of the 3rd ed setting books for that. Good setting books are a well of entertainment Going vaguely back to topic 2nd ed wfrp had some of the best lets hope they return in some form. Looking at one ring stuff seems to be big for cubicle 7.… Read more »
I miss the old world 🙁
Same here.
🙁
@paragon you are amoung friends, it’s not gone it still lives in us all and is now safe from Wardensian retcons ( not sure if all the bad decisions where his)
Yup, same here. Thankfully I’m able to play Oldhammer games with friends but in an ideal (fantasy) world GW could continue with AoS whilst allowing Forgeworld to do something with WFB (Warhammer Forge?) as would appear to be the case with these two mooted versions of the roleplay game.
it has a bit more of a D&D pathfinder cartoony look than the original but I still quite like the starter set art.
crucible 7 are a safe pair of hands and i’m interested to see which way they go with it.
There was never more fun and adventure to be had than my groups first WFRP campaign which took them up to Something rotten in Kislev. WFRP tapped into a gritty, it could be type of adventure, unlike the high fantasy setting of Rolemaster and Merp had at the time. I am looking forward to seeing how this team do, dusting off my old books for that nostalgic look back, and hoping my gaming group lets me GM this one too.
@wildbill I agree – but it’s funny you mention Something Rotten in Kislev as that’s one of the wackier, higher fantasy adventures. Some nice ideas in it, but certainly wasn’t my favourite of the Enemy Within Campaign!
