Awesome New Terrain & Stormcast Coming To Age Of Sigmar
July 18, 2015 by brennon
Games Workshop are continuing to support the Stormcast Eternals of Age of Sigmar with the release of the Lord-Castellant plus two new plastic terrain sets with both the Ophidian Archway and Baleful Realmgate hitting the tabletop...
Meet My Gryph-Hound...
Another leader has hit the battlefield on a wave of lightning for the Stormcast Eternals. The Lord-Castellant does a devastating number of hits with his Halberd but the main use of him is to unlock the power of his Warding Lantern.
When facing the hordes of Chaos the Lantern does D3 Mortal Wounds to your opponent. In defence however it is even better. When cast on a Stormcast unit it will add +1 to their saves and if you make it on a seven then you get to heal a wound within the unit during the next Hero Phase.
He also has his loyal Gryph-Hound. The warning cry that it uses means that the army is never surprised when around it. When a unit secretly deploys within ten inches of the Gryph-Hound it can cry out and alert shooting units to their coming, allowing the models to shoot at them as a reaction.
Terrain Of The Realms
Of course no game is complete without it's terrain and Games Workshop have made some stunning looking hard plastic kits for you to use with Age of Sigmar. I think Games Workshop do a superb job with their terrain if nothing else and it's usually not that badly priced either...
The first piece to have a look at is the Ophidian Archway. As with everything in Age of Sigmar is offers you some special rules on the tabletop. As well as being sinister and offering cover there is an ability to wake up the carvings upon the stone.
Using Bravery Tests you can see whether or not the beast wrought upon the stone awakens and either kills a model of your choice or eats you for daring to disturb its eerie slumber.
Next up we have the Baleful Realmgate. This has the ability to take on two different terrain characteristics each turn but is also very unstable. It might lash out with magical energy and slay your warriors if they get too close.
They can also be used for dangerous transportation of units. If your unit travels through one of these gates on a roll of a one the model is slain, sent off into the ether to never return. But, if you make it through you will now be in a possibly more advantageous position.
A Priest or Wizard can help in this however and allows you to re-roll the result of a one if you were so unfortunate as to fail the first test.
I think the terrain itself is looking great and I quite like the Lord-Castellant too even if he is a little over the top with all that armour!
What do you think?

Those look great, and the idea of terrain having special rules really appeals to me. It adds a whole new layer of depth to the game.
Special rules for terrain = always a bonus. The Ophidian Archway looks like it has some Mordheim potential. Not sure how big it is. Hopefully I can find it for half that price sometime.
I just want the gryph-hound……..cutie…..ahem.
The Bird-Dog, or Bog for short.
That marine mini is far too over the top and busy for my taste. It’s worse in those departments than even 40k marines.
Those floating gates look off imo, but the archway is real nice for any fantasy game .. if wayland can get a nice discount on i might get one
“Birdy, birdy, tiger!”
The immortal words of Betty, from Kungpow.
The scenery looks great, hopefully it ain’t too pricey
The scenery looks great – as does almost all GW scenery. Apparently some of the scenery is 2 years old :p so there you go (read the rules for the Baleful Realmgates and laughed though).
The Lord-Castellant is, of course, a mess of a model. DID SIGMAR THROW UP ON HIM??
Lord Castellant: “In honor of you joining the marines of sigmar, I present to you the plague……I mean the plaque.” The citation reads: You are stuck with us forever.
Minis for this game are so ridiculous. That terrain though, looks like something out of hellraiser. I could see buying it for sure.
I like both pieces of terrain, and will probably pick up the portals. They’re exactly what I need for my current AD&D campaign. I moved on WRT the mini’s the minute I saw them.
My missus loves the arch, meaning she will probably come home from work one day and drop it into my lap. I’m good with that too :-).
…”get down Shep!”
Maybe it is a ‘One Man and his dog’ warscroll!
To quote I’m Gonna Git You Sucka “How’s he go the bathroom with all that sh– on?”
Those terrain pieces are really impressive. Easily best of AoS releases so far.
…well, it has been a weel!
Or maybe it was a week…
Apparently they were technically Storm of Chaos releases :p – at least the gates
The terrain pieces are great although they would not look out of plave in an aquarium…
I think GW have done reasonably well to price this game sensibly – the starter is decent value at £85, and the terrain well priced too. The clam packs however are pretty crazy, £20 + for a single model is really a little OTT.
How is this so? The starter set is actually £75 and is value for money given GW’s pricing – and is no different to all their other starter sets. The actual Age of Sigmar release is a box of 5 Liberators (with weapon options) which is £30 for 5 models…. priced well? Or incredibly stupid given this is meant to be attracting new people? GW’s scenery is usually reasonably priced so I don’t think they’re doing anything differently. I would feel much happier if the £20+ characters were Resin or, if they ‘have’ to be plastic, had a host of… Read more »
£23..!!!! 2 minis in 28 mm in Plastic..!!!!!!
Please Halo, don`t let the future models cost this..I beg you….!!!!
I bet that you can get that miniature at a cheaper price than £23.
Just gorgeous! After 20+ years away from Warhammer, AoS has me so excited to return!
lol!
I like the Gryph-Hound, it looks really cool. And that’s some fine looking terrain pieces.
Terrain looks great, love the way the gates are suspended in air to look separated from the ground to represent portals, the hero is rather busy looking for my tastes but what I do like is the synergy between heros, units and terrain to open up a lot of tactical options.
the arch is good the floating gate thingy is a no from me.
I quite like the Realmgates – could use them for loads of different scenarios in a hundred different games – and you get two in the box. (I would count it as four – two sets of ruins and two magic portals – check out the generic magick symbols on the rear too)
Love terrain that is either so cheap that you wouldn’t bother knocking it out yourself outta plasticard, or so intricate/thematic/detailed that it justifies the cost. For £35 these are actually looking like a pretty sweet buy.
As a side, with these new terrain bits, it’s becoming clear that AOS was designed just after the developers had finished playing Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Replace Chaos God with Daedric Prince and you’re pretty much there.
Now I just can’t wait for the Chaos God of madness, Sheogorath.
“Cheese for everyone!!”
The terrain kits are looking good. I like the overall design of the Ophidian Archway with its serpentine detailing… or is that a hydra… Hmmm, what has the Alpha Legion been up to now? As for the Baleful Realmgates, I think they are rather fun in a whacky way, and certainly seem to open up possibilities for some interesting maneuver shenanigans and even multiple-board games. They remind me a little of the Dark Portal from Warcraft. As for the the Lord-Castellan and his Gryph Hound, I differ from what appears to be the general consensus on the thread and actually… Read more »
love the Gryphon hound
Charging £30 for 5 plastic liberators thats £6 each for lets face it basic troops, if GW want to attract new players/customers to the genre they need to look at pricing more sensibly and as far as the ophidian archway goes thats just GW copying someone elses stuff yet again. French company called Rackham had a game called confrontation/ragnarok with a race called the ophidians and they travelled there world called Arkklash using ophidian gates, sound familiar.
Erm … you do know ‘ophidian’ is a word don’t you?
Yes i know that they are snakes/reptiles but watch this space you’ll see, the dwarves will probably have steam golems as well just like Rackham.
