I’m awake at daft o clock in the morning, so may as well watch XLBS…..
Pokemon is one of the darkest dystopias ever conceived in fiction. Pokemon challenges are basically dogfights (or cockfights) only they’re done with sentient animals that can learn to talk. And having the ability to talk gives Pokemon NO protection from being slaughtered for meat when they’re not used for sanctioned dogfights. Your character in every game is basically a child going out to become a master of dogfights and you’re lauded as a hero for doing so.
I had an argument with a vegan once who told me I wasn’t allowed to criticise Pokemon (they were a fan) because I ate meat. Which I find bizarre because I find animal fighting far more distasteful than bacon.
Is there a Gen-Con meet up?
Sam, Justin, Dawn & Gianna will probably sort something out yes @rasmus – wait and see until closer to the event and we’ll let you know.
Sounds good to me
Saturday at 730 pm at Loughmillers. One block north of the convention center.
I’ll be there
Happy Sunday!!
@brennon with your bust primed black, your 1/3 there for a three tone zenith base. Step 2: Find a mid tone grey you can feed through an airbrush and do a general spray around, 30-60 degrees above horizontal leaving some underhanging areas black. Step 3: load your airbrush with white or a light grey, pick your zenith direction and angle and pick out your highlights as well as giving it the lightest boost overall. Then the fun begins with the layering.
For the skintones, there are some nice skintone paint sets out there to help with the colour combos.
Happy Sunday,
after the last XLBS I did work more on my WuXia idea, working out card mechanics and came to some great conclusions for that. As you Lets played “Onitama” the moving mechanics there translatet to a hex based game and modified it a bit, could work.
I think that would be rather cool. There’s a lot of scope in there to create a game that has a lot fo neat moments built into it 🙂
Keep chipping away at it buddy, designing a game and seeing it come to life is such a rewarding experience.
Oh yes it is. ^^
Have you seen the game Yashima at all? Each player controls a single miniature that fights on a hex-based grid and you have a deck of cards which controls how you can move and attack. It has a kind of fantasy Japanese theme. It has quite a nice mechanic where you basically have a deck of cards for your hero, and one for a spirit animal, and you can mix and match how you combine them. I was lucky enough to pick it up at Essen a couple of years ago, it’s an absolute blast to play. A lot less… Read more »
O.o
That is exactly what I am working on… okay… damn. Perhaps a just a reskin then. I have to get this game.
@dracs – if you come back two sizes larger that just means you’ll be actual hobbit sized. ?
Really like those Nighthaunt; look so much better than the standard ‘radioactive green’ look. 🙂
1930s Shanghai gang game – gotta have Indiana Jones as a special character/NPC/fun for hire/etc. ?
I agree with Sam, the human GM will trump the digital GM for me; I don’t think a computer GM would be sophisticated enough (yet) to cope with the inventiveness necessary to adequately GM or be able to properly make judgement calls especially when players make really off the wall/bonkers ideas/plans.
I like the idea of Indy as a characte, will deffo add him to the growing NPC list..lol
Gencon is in Indianapolis, not Chicago.
Yes, they do know that haha @gobbo although they are staying with Dawn & Gianna who live near Chicago so they will be visiting there during their off time.
Happy Sunday… Ok I am going to show my age now.. the idea of Alexa doing the fighting fantasy books… That sounds just like the old text based adventure games on the home computers of the early 80s like the BBC Micro… Who else remembers the frustration of go east, you cannot go east, go west, you cannot go west go north, cannot go north, go south you go south and enter a room what do you what to do? Search room, you find the room is empty… It became very annoying way to lose hours of your life… As… Read more »
I believe you can get Zork on the AppStore these days if you fancy reliving that frustration. ?
Really?
/ Examine app store…….
Thankfully Alexa would be a pretty well-versed replacement for the old computer games haha. They are quite good at working out what you’ve said.
Happy Sunday everyone, Thanks to Ben for the shout out. Having gone through the whole process of making a game through the use of crowdfunding I am always happy to try and pass on advice from our experiences. So if anyone ever has any questions that we can answer to help steer you clear of minefields we will always try to respond or comment. I love to see the Golden Button entries and the effort that has gone into producing great hobby miniatures or scenery. Today was another great example and kudos to all those who have done some awesome… Read more »
I think that Hobby Hangout is a good way for us to show off the work that people do from the Projects and Forums on Frontstage but I like that we get to talk more hobby (both what we’ve been doing and you folks) in Backstage as it gives it a nicer relaxed feel.
The Fronstage show is always packed as it is and we focus more on news and such there so I think it provides a nice contrast between the two.
Ben, reach out to me and I can assist on Savage Worlds. I have been playing for years!!!
Awesome @gobbo – the first thing I wanted to ask was about combat. The basics of it are sounding very good, especially the way the card-dealing initiative system works but I wasn’t too sure about the ‘health’ that enemies have.
I know that mooks/minions go down from a single strike (with a raise I think?) but is it the case that EVERY Wild Card (character) gets three wounds yes?
There are [other than for Mooks] 3 levels of wounds and the Shaken Status. When using Mook/Minions in combat, it is easy to know status for them. If I leave the miniature up, it is fine. If it becomes shaken, I lay the figure on its side [until it recovers or is eliminated] and if eliminated, I just remove it from the map. My players and I call this “Up, Down or Off”. PCs and non-minion NPCs are different as they can take up to 3 levels of wounds [each giving a cumulative -1 to all rolls]. That can also… Read more »
Awesome thank you @gobbo – that is very helpful. I did read part one of that but will take another look!
Read part 2, they talk about damage. It is possible to have you character take enough damage to do “Shaken and 2 wounds” due to raises. you really want to soak that kind of damage as teh -2 from the wounds will not go into effect until after your soak roll!
RPGs Sam and Ben need to look at:
Fung Shui
Wu Xing: The Ninja Crusade
Qin, The Waring States and Oriental Adventures too
Definitely, recommend Feng Shui, but if you want full on immersive Wuxia experience, check out bedrock games – http://www.bedrockgames.net/Wandering-Heroes-of-Ogre-Gate.html Wandering heroes of Ogre Gate
Someone advised me to use Savage worlds on the comments section of beasts of war. Fantastic system and caters for an open RPG with crazy players. e.g. a mage in the future… only done a walk through but seems great so far. When I get stuck in it will be a project to help me keep track.
Happy Sunday!
Yes! more Kung Fu games!
It’s a net, and it’s tiny!
Just a quick one for those with Alexa devices check out the following skills “The Magic Door” and “Ear Player” they are both interactive stories where Alexa almost acts as the GM for the story being told. Not deep but you get an idea where the technology might go in the future.
Love it Guy’s, Ben what about every player has a dase card with upgrade points that you bye with resources you gain from controlling sections of the map.
If you’re sonic cleaner doesn’t work just bath the gun in cleaning solution testing after 6 hour’s an just repeat till it’s working again taking everything you can’t dit off obviously first @dignity .
@sam you should download the app; Viki is chock full of Chinese, Korea and some Japanese TV dramas.
SAM. That Thin Lizzy made my day! Cheers from The Bay Area.
Thin Lizzy was the first band I saw live 1982 in the Whitla Hall Belfast
Rad! One of my brothers got “Jailbreak” in 1977. I rocked that album at 7 years old until this day! I wish I could have seen them with Phil. Seen the latest version. Not the the same though. You’re a lucky man.
Hobby time live! Haha
Savage Worlds is my favorite RPG because of it’s versatility and the fact that my prep as a GM is about 25% of what it was with d20.
Ben, I am sure you will love Savage Worlds. It works on so many levels and easily adapts any genre so far. On top of that you can readily move from RPG into skirmish battle with the Showdown rules.
@dignity I don’t have an ultra sonic cleaner and never had real problems with my airbrush. When I first got my airbrush there is this video on Beasts of War Backstage that helped me understand how to care for an airbrush. The video is here: https://www.beastsofwar.com/3-colors-up/cleaning-airbrush/
Great XLBS. Thanks guys 🙂
Happy Sunday All! Another great show. As I mentioned elsewhere in these comments, Yashima is a great hex+mini+deck fantasy martial arts game worth checking out for those interested in that sort of thing. Savage Worlds is a great RPG system, and really nice for being basically a platform for building other RPG experiences on. I played in a great Firefly campaign using Savage Worlds, and a few other different games. I would say typically combat is brutal, it’s not like D&D in that respect. Not always lethal (depending on the exact setting rules) but often you are weakened and then… Read more »
