Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition Demo Game
June 3, 2017 by lloyd
We are at UK Games Expo all weekend and got the chance to stop in with Games Workshop to play through a Demo Game of the new Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition.
This new version of the game and Dark Imperium, that we’re using now, is now available for you to pre-order from the Games Workshop webstore.
Let us know what you think of the key mechanics on display here and if you’re going to be getting into the game.
Also make sure you get a comment in on this weekends live blogs for a chance to win a prize.

What an awesome play through vid.. had everything you’d hope for from it and a bit of comedy too. Now if GW can just bottle that guy’s enthusiasm, I’m sure everyone would have amazing games of WH40K, win or lose.
Can’t wait for my copy to arrive.. just need to figure out how I’m going to Wolf these new primaris marines up..
I preordered the set and the Imperial Index with the AM in it. The box is a good deal (even better at 20% off at this store) and it looked to me like the system was well thought out. I admit to having gone from never touch GW again to better than cautiously optimistic. Good demo video, nice demo setup. Now I’m glad I kept my Space Marine hordes!
Soooo…the best edition ever still has that dreadfull “I do all my stuff…then you do all your stuff with what is left over”…really?!? Had really hoped they got rid of that uninspired thing of the past…bummer 🙁
I had a demo yesterday at Element Games (first on the demo table, wooo!) and I’m not sure what I thought. I’ve been following the hype, and liking what I’ve heard/seen but I got hammered by the guy giving the demo (never helps on a demo game) and the turn system just seems so backwards now. I’ve been playing Guild Ball and a bit of Bushido for the last few years so going to back to that just felt weird. Also the buckets of dice is still a thing. The 3 inceptors(?) roll six dice each when shooting. Mental. The… Read more »
Agreed, never was a big fan of the IGOUGO system. That is why I stopped playing Warhammer and 40k and started playing games that have a alternate activation/reaction system..
I do like the simplified combat system.
a nice video guys.
…… a year ago we wouldn’t have seen a) GW at this con b) a GW employee on cam c) a GW employee talking to a BoW employee. GW you’ve have changed a lot in a short period of time, and are reaping the benefits. Well played.
…. and Justin mate you roll (dice) like I do …… this isn’t a good thing.
Aye, awesome show from GW. They’re so very different in a very short time.
You pretty much nailed something there.
I’d even add:
d) a GW guy who seems he can (rather is allowed to) actually see beyond his/her employers product line horizon*
*(except for some sadly rather rare individuals and the real big time gurus as Mr. Godwin, Mr. Blanche and so on who stand beyond any doubt on these and many other matters as proven by their words, actions and attitudes time and again)
This is between the lines of a) to c) already, but still deserves extra mentioning, I feel.
Looks good – I might get the boxed set, but not sure whether I want these factions or not.
Still deciding if I want the ones in the starter box – maybe if I add them to Guilleman they will look good.
Great video. Looking forward to getting my preordered stuff. My son and I are splitting the starter set and I get the Chaos faction. Looking forward to having them on the table.
Thanks for the demo game BOW.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out in another year. I’ll keep my eye on it, this is only a demo game after all, but it might be different enough from any other iteration to be worth a try.
This edition has me interested in getting back to 40K.
Great demo of combat. Simple and straight forward.
Always wanted to get into this game but the numerous special rules with each edition/codex proved too steep a learning curve for me.
If the rest of the rules are as straight forward as this then there will be hope for me.
Looking good – lightweight and fast, so just what I need in my limited play time
Ok. So GW have cut back on the wordy special rules, and just switched to simple to remember ‘X+ rolls.’For now…. But if recent history is any thing to go by, remember when GW ‘simplified’ 40k from 2nd to 3rd ed. And all the common sense more complicated rules like to hit and armour modifiers were dropped.(And not replaced with s simpler alternative.) And then were replaced by loads of counter intuitive complicated special rules ,USRs and ‘special snowflake special’ rules years afterwards.Leading to more bloated and more complicated rules, delivering less complex game play.(Compared to 2nd ed.) All GW… Read more »
Ooops.
I should have written,
”If they actually focused more on game development , rather than selling toy soldiers in the short term.It would help them no end. More complex simple core rules would remove the need for the special rules bloat that will probably follow…
That was a great demo, I love it when a demo shows off both sides and spotlights the rules but is still clearly fun and enjoyed by the players.
What a great demo. Considering it was just the starter box forces lined up a few inches apart, the GW guy really managed to squeeze a lot of fun into that game. Excellent.
Just a little side note to consider: Ain’t even the full box content. 😉
Can’t really help myself. These forces’ power balancing seems very lopsided. Maybe it’s a really wrong impression, but I do try to only count in the ‘stats’ (such as Saves, Wounds, weapon profiles), attacks potential and stuff like this ridiculous plasma 1s reroll combo. The actual results rolled I try to ignore here since they really twist the representation in this case (sure everyone can feel that). Just one facet of this: Those plague zombies 2.0 seem to have some tar pit potential, sure. But how useful is that if the rest of the gang can’t nearly stand up to… Read more »
I liked this demo game. I really liked Simons(?) enthusiasm.
Been playibg 7th edition. Didn’t particularly like it, but really like the guys Im playing with. Definitely getting 8th edition, but probably keeping our ‘houserule’ regarding turn sequence (playing like in Bolt Action).
An excellent demo vid, good coverage from the cameras on the action and the players. The enthusiasm of both players was awesome.
The rules seem tidy for 40k, having been a sometimes player since 2nd ed it is nice to see some stuff pared back. Though each edition has always been “the best edition of 40k” lol, not like they’re going to bring out “the worst edition of 40k evaaahh!” Lol
I’m keen to put my old army back on the table!
Really more interested now…
A good play through.
Great video play through. Simple and yet covered all of the new play mechanics for the two armies.
What makes this type of demo work is adding the inspired descriptions to the dice roll results. Many battle videos end up being “dice roll, result, dice roll, result” without the fluffy descriptions. These types of videos show the game mechanics without the fun cinematics.
