Games Workshop has revealed more of the new T'au miniatures coming to Warhammer 40,000. Previous previews revealed the core of the new Kroot range and now we've got the stalking hunters, the Kroot Hounds!

The new Kroot Hounds have been given a proper glow-up to bring them in line with the other Kroot available to the T'au. In packs of five, they are going to be bounding across the tabletop looking to snack on unfortunate squads of infantry that have strayed too far from the protection of their own lines.

Whilst we discussed the new look of the Kroot a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't inspiring Justin or Lloyd, I think the new design is pretty ace. It's chunkier and more in line with the aesthetic of the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. I still think they have an animalistic quality to them but one that doesn't feel at odds with the new way armies look in the Grimdark Future. I imagine you're going to want to run these in bigger packs than five but they might be handy for swamping an enemy and dragging them down.

They have a new ability called Loping Pounce which allows the Kroot Hounds to be let off the leash and charge in the turn in which they advanced. They only get this if they have begun next to a Kroot Infantry unit though so you'll want to watch how you match up your movement across the battlefield.
If you also make sure that your Kroot are within 12" of a Kroot Character then they also get Objective Control 1 which means that they can be used to rush an enemy, overwhelm them with snapping jaws and then hold down the objective, securing you some more victory points.

I do like the new models but I think Justin’s point is vaild. They made the new Kroot more upright so they look more human. Oddly they have carried this on in a Kroot Hounds. The style of previous hounds where lean and thin hunters. More like a typical dog or a cat we see in the wild. Something that you could see stalking the prey and then attacking with speed. Look at the front leg on these hounds look like they have been down a gym pushing weights. The muscles are more like a human arm. I guess they… Read more »
When Justin is right, he’s right!
I think it’s not so much the proportions, rather the rather “stiff” posing with both the Kroot and the Hounds (in fact I feel these Kroot Hounds have probably the worst posing I’ve ever seen for a 4 legged dog like creature). It might be a side effect of digital sculpting (as a 3D render on a screen gives a poor idea of what the mini is going to look like compared to holding a 3D “green” master sculpt in your hand). But those hounds just don’t have the animation and character the older metal hounds had.
Seems weird how the older Kroot models are skinnier and more wiry than older ones. It’s ESPECIALLY weird when you consider how delicate and elaborate AoS and “modern” 40K models are (Kroot excepted, apparently).
Almost makes me wonder if they’re turning back towards the bulkier old school style. I DOUBT it, but it seems almost possible now.
