Unboxing: Warhammer 40k – Kill Team
July 18, 2018 by johnlyons
Today we're unboxing Games Workshop's newest boxed game and likely your most eagerly awaited; Kill Team.
Mass battles between scores of units and thundering war machines are great, but there’s always been an undeniable appeal to skirmishes – those moment-to-moment struggles where victory rests on the efforts of a mere handful of troops and their individual heroics – when every warrior is a distinct character with their own story.
Who would you love to field in Kill Team?

This looks awesome, the only issues is it coming out at roughly the same time as Adeptus Titanicus so wallets may take a beating in the next few weeks!.
I’ve been looking forward to this one, I do like that new terrain
The more I hear and see about this the more I want it. I know a lot of people at the club are excited about this.
I will only buy the book for now, but I think it will be worth it.
My Kill Team will be Tempestus Scions, I´ve also Harlequins and Skitarii here.
Perhaps you can do some Catachan vs. Nids in a jungle fight, or Tau vs. Eldar.
Looks great! I would actually really like to see you play some games with the sets that come in the box. I suspect that others who want to try the game quickly will use stuff they’ve already got made, and in fact I don’t see many Genestealer cults or Adeptus Mechanicus forces. That said, I think @johnlyons ‘ idea of running a campaign of the last days of the former Stone Templars is awesome. I think that would benefit from a bit more preparation though: instead of playing against anyone on the standard terrain, actually create some terrain specific to… Read more »
I love this idea. You are entirely right on doing it properly and making the terrain and Eldar forces.
@johnlyons @dignity – many thanks for the speedy unboxing.
I’m thinking that Cypher and some renegade Dark Angels would be good in Kill Team, just need some 30K marines to run with Cypher.
I’m just going to get the rulebook if they release it separately, otherwise I might not get into it because I can’t quantify a whole box where I don’t care about the miniatures that come with it.
I want to play my Deathwatch with this.
The rulebook will definitely be available separately, based on what my FLGS is saying.
I have Necromunda. This sounds a lot like Necromunda and that’s not a bad thing! White Dwarf had some rules for a Genestealer Necromunda gang… so that’s a bonus. I have Forgebane, so I already have Adeptus Mechanicus, which expands their army in both Forgebane and Kill Team. Forgebane has Necrons… how can you not love undead terminators? Kill Team has rules for Necrons… The terrain is awesome… Battle of the Pelennor fields due next month. Soul Wars and Malign Sorcery last month (plus Storm Strike incoming as a bargain way to expand Soul Wars) I am helping GW make… Read more »
Where did the Stone Templar painting video go?
This could be a thing, I like and have been tempted by both these forces, so I would definitely start with these two forces, and the scenery looks wonderful. Over time would like to add Harlequins and Slaneesh ( Would love to add Noise Marines if (when) they see the light of day), would make for a good campaign. Also be interested in Thousand Sons and Dark Eldar.
This could get expensive.
LOL at the opening … brilliant!
I am curious the kill team options for Harlequin but I want to see Deathwatch on the table
I am curious the choices in building a Harlequin kill team but I would love to see Deathwatch on the table
I have looked at the book to see about my own Harlequins. There aren’t really any options. You only get basic troupe players. However, they can be equipped with a variety of fusion pistols, harlequin’s caresses etc. and given that they still ignore terrain and have four attacks each, they are going to hit hard.
Probably get mowed down by Tau overwatching though.
I was afraid of that. It is a shame Harlequins are so limited in options for this set up but at least it will give me an excuse to work on some other faction I have no intention of building a full list with.
If there’s more terrain on the table than the enemy won’t have much to set up killzones.
Plus think of their movement …
I suspect you’d want to catch your foes on their own somehow.
Ignoring terrain effectively gives them the chance to outflank practically anyone.
The 40k Killteam page gives them invulnarability shields as part of a strategy.
I’m so getting this box!!! I can’t wait to dust off my Orks. Oh man!!!! You guys should do Orks vs Sisters. Dakka vs Flames!!!! That would be amazing!
Cheers boys from across the pond
This looks awesome 😀 I think i will pick it up, because im starting a mechanicus army, and i can always use more skitarii 😀 But i would love to see Imperial Guard vs orks ;D
Love the terrain, and the battle board. It looks really beautiful. By the way, I know you guys have a lot on you plate, but how is the space wulf and thousand sons projekt going? @johnlyons
We haven’t gotten around to the thousand sons yet. But the wolves have been done for quite a while
Thanks, then i have something to look forward too 🙂
I’ll be getting this. Haven’t played 40k for eons but this has grabbed me. I’ve ordered some Tau to experiment with. Please drop everything and do a lets play!!!
Wonderful maps and buildings.
As a classical faction I´d go for Chaos Space Marnes, deep red in all their glory, and as a funny one Deutsche Fallschirmjäger as a subfaction of the Astra Militarum.
Looking forward to the Let’s Play for this. Not sure what was so exciting at the start of the vid as the box contains no tanks 🙂 I do like the 40k universe (way back in the original Rogue Trader book) but this looks like it is aimed more at people with existing GW collections than new players. Building a diverse KT will cost a lot for newbies, and my budget is on Legion and Tanks at the moment.
Astartes, Grey Knights, Harlequins, Orks, Death Guard, T’au, GSC and Mechanicus. I could be playing with just the contents of the starter box and my existing collection for quite a while.
I read elsewhere on the internet that the cards that the game will be using will indeed follow the same formula that Shadespire has, which is; those little kill team boxes will include neutral cards that any force can use, so if you want to be competitive, get your wallet ready to buy every kill team box they release.
Pumped for this release. Looks great and easy to play on the coffee table.
Thousand Sons vs Grey Knights could be fun, or perhaps give your Prussonian force a run? @johnlyons
Great open the box all my questions answered and a few I hadnt thought of.
Being playing Shaow Wars Armaggedon so have some teams planned.
Think after got the base game, will put up a forum to post the teams and pics.
Not played 40k for a few years now but Kill Team has always interested me. Would love to read the rules. Do GW do free rules PDF’s?
That’s quite a box. I’ve been out of GW games for a few years now, but this looks tempting. Especially since the whole game is contained within that box.
But it is also nice that all factions will be represented. That could encourage me to get my Tau out of the basement.
I must admit that a large part of the attraction of the big box is the lack of Space Marines. They must be the most boring faction.
