June 9, 2017 by dignity
We sit down for an unboxing of the Dark Imperium Starter Set for Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000!
Inside this set you get two massive armies, the Ultramarines and Death Guard, featuring the great new sculpts for the Primaris Space Marines in their Mark X Armour.
You also get everything else you need to get going including a hardback rulebook. Find out more about what's inside by watching the video above.
Will you be picking this up?

Hold on a cotton-picking minute! How did you guys get a preview copy??? The times they are a definitely a changing!?!? @johnlyons is fit to burst and that’s even without a flying tank! Next up you’ll be having the GW community team in for a chat………nah, that’ll never happen.
That would be as crazy as @avernos having a photo taken without him in his classic one fingered pondering pose 😉
lol
Guess being forced back to the Emerald Isle and a few years with a whole new GW senior management team seems to have changed things.
So, you were a heretic, Justin? You need to burn.
the gifts of the dark gods shall be mine once again 😉
Did it fall off the back of a lorry?
I’m picking this up. Anything Nurgle or Khorne related I’m a sucker for.
I’ve seen a few people on Youtube got preview sets as well. Frankly it’s about time GW started showing love to the likes of BOW.
You lucky, lucky b******* 😀 . The Primaris are great looking mini’s ( as are the DG,but in a different, more disgusting way ) and i am fit to burst with the excitement of splitting the box with my mate next Saturday over a drink in the pub. I can see ( and share ) the feeling John has for the Primaris, he may very well explode when he gets his hands on the Repulsor Tank 😀 .
Are the Chaos Space Marines the same height as the new Primaris?
I think they are. There are some pics of them side by side on the net.
I just took a look here: http://steppingbetweengames.com/new-8th-edition-40k-models-size-comparison/ . As far as i can tell ‘standard’ Plague Marines are the same height as the old style Space Marines, though they have more girth. They are shorter than the new Primaris Space Marines.
Here are some more photos: https://spikeybits.com/2017/05/how-big-is-big-new-primaris-size-comparison-pics.html .
They look to be about the same height as the Mk3 armour marines from Burning of Prospero, which makes sense. They are a little taller than the other plastic marks of power armour (Mk4/6/7/8) but not as tall as Primaris.
Barely played 40k over the years, despite collecting and painting a good number of minis since 4th edition.
Gonna jump both feet into 8th edition, but while I do like the Primaris marines I’m going to start a new Astra Militarum army to kick off. Just a rulebook and index ordered for the time being.
Nice unboxing got to say that looks a nice set. Really looking forward to this one, cant believe I’ve got to wait another week for it and for once I’m going to a GW store to pick it up, haven’t been in one for years.
Just placed my pre-order, luckily I have had a £50 credit on the site for some time now. Seems like a good reason to spend it.
I have been out of the GW universes for several years now, being a big WHFB and WH40K player for the ten years prior to that, but this may possibly bring me back. Nice review guys, and a good look at the new Primaris Marines. Oh and @johnlyons & @dignity I believe the term you were looking for was ‘cybernetic’. 🙂
……Okay , now I know GW have changed, first they give you a play through at GW Games Expo….. now they have given BoW a pre-view copy…..Truly this is the end times.
Pre-ordering my copy in 2 hours time (squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 😀 )
Great shiny syndrome xD Good thing is now I really want to paint my Eldar for 8th edition… xD
Can’t wait for mine to arrive – no fancy preview copy for me!
I’ll do a bit more on the Skitarii starter box + Belisarius Cawl while I wait for postman pat’s little red van to drop it off.
I pre-ordered mine the second they opened on the GW site along with a load of extra papa Nurgle goodness. I’d been toying with getting into Nurgle for a while (Tzeentch is my true love) and this seems an excellent opportunity. Esp with their primarch, Mortarian, due for release soon.
If anyone is intending to get this, worth noting that GW released a new base paint with it; Death Guard Green, available in a pot or a handy dandy rattle can spray.
I`m loving the new look of the Primaris Space Marines, just not to sure if i want to spend time and money doing another 40K army, but then again i could just add a few unit`s to one of my exciting chapters. The next question is which chapter to add them to……………………………..Ultra`s…Wolves or my own chapter…………..Knights of Cydonia (Ya taken from the Muse song).
Great, detailed unboxing. It seems that new Edition of 40k brings
an updated Justin with it too – more serious and intense. And I do
not recall seeing John so excited about any non-tank models before.
Was only planning on getting the rule Book… but those Primaris do
look really impressive…
Arrrghhh, it’s space marines space marines space marines! Why not have a starter set with some orks, tyranids or tau?
Not going to lie though, I’m buying a set – the disgustingly resilient chaos marines look like a good painting challenge!
Justin FYI mate one of the Assassins has Snipe ability which allows it to target the character regardless of where it was standing (so you were 100% correct about some characters eventually have that ability)
Oh and this box has got me back into 40k after 26ish odd years
As do Ratling snipers. Hooray.
Is it worth preordering 2 boxes? can you use all the minutes twice? I did this with AOS which meant I had a few too many leaders I couldn’t use, but felt it was a cheaper way to get bigger forces to the table. just asking…
As long as your wallet can take the pain, any extra stuff can go on ebay, you would have 2 very nice forces in the end.
It’ll still work out cheaper than buying the extra squads individually even if you chuck the duplicate characters in the bin. They would however be cool for conversion fodder or could be sold on eBay.
Played my 1st game of 8th on Thursday (first game since I tried 7th a few weeks after the release, which was my first game after trying 6th, etc.). It was faster, more intuitive, and more fun. I especially enjoyed when my opponent’s Space Marine Assault Sergeant with powerfist was not able to insta-annihi-crush my T’au Piranha in close combat. Bad dice rolls were still my undoing, but I even enjoyed losing because things felt like they were living up to their background. I won’t get another game in until maybe a demo pod at Origins next weekend, but I’m… Read more »
Oh, and the models for both armies included in Dark Imperium are really very good. Everyone in my gaming group who is getting the box are keeping both forces.
Cracking stuff. Watched half a dozen unboxings and getting more and more excited with each one.
Tell me they’ve been sensible and made the ruler 1″ wide for measuring melee range.
Although I’m not particularly fond of Space Marines I do like the new ones.
Only downside to the nice sculpts is that there isn’t a lot pose ability, every figure goes together in exactly one way..
I’ll get a couple of those Marines from eBay and decide then if I’ll jump on the GW bandwagon.
Really bizarre to see @johnlions so excited about a non WW2 product! He will have a lot of explaining to do next time I see him 😉
The starter set looks great overall. And for the first time ever I’m actually drawn towards Nurgle.
I’m not so sure about the posing of the Space Marine droptroops. If I were to get my hands on them I would probably repose them with their feet planted on the ground, or on one foot as if dashing forward.
a great interesting video guys the new spacemarines marines look fantastic.
