More New Warhammer 40,000 Tyranid Leaks! [Updated!]
October 28, 2014 by brennon
In a strange twist the next Games Workshop release seems to be going back to the grim dark future of Warhammer 40,000. This time around the reveal is the new Toxicrene which appeared on the front of White Dwarf...
Updated: More leaks have shown off both the Toxicrene and the Maleceptors!
The first tentacled creature we saw with the toxin loaded barbs on the end of it's tendrils is the Toxicrene. As you can see in this slightly better picture it's quite big and has plenty of sacks full of deadly fluid on it's back. It would be interesting to see this have some kind of instant death style effect on it's enemies when it hits them.
The second of the creatures, making this a dual kit, is the Maleceptor (this appears to be their name anyway) that has some huge talons in place of the tendrils and a chomping maw instead of the tentacled mouth. If anything it looks like an upgrade to the existing Carnifex design. I do like those big hulking beasts.
Some people have dubbed the Toxicrene the child of Cthulhu and I can see what they're getting at. It will be interesting to see what it does.
Why Games Workshop are going back to Tyranids I don't quite know. I don't really think they took off too well when they returned to the battlefield with their new edition Codex but something must be pushing them to release another miniature. It seems quite the leap to have been all fired up about The Glottkin and then swooping back into Warhammer 40,000 quite so soon. It also does blow the thoughts about Blood Angels out of the water in the run up to December.
Don't count anything out however just yet as this weekly release schedule has them doing some crazy things right now!
When we see more from inside we'll let you know.

Well that’s not too bad for being baby Cthulhu.
How long have GW been copying Cthulhu i wonder? Also usage of the word “terror” with the tyranids is suspicious .. someone should look into it before it gets to “horror” as well .. the amount of tentacles in the mouth on these things is clearly enough on its own for a lawsuit.
except that Lovecraft left the Cthulhu open for usage by other writers, which is why most of it isn’t copyrighted. – See more at: http://www.beastsofwar.com/warhammer-40k/tyranids-swarming-warhammer-40000/#comment-154612
Not really. He died before any other writers got a hold of that.
But the rights are disputed between two estates, and neither want to start suing over small infringements because they might end up losing their rights all together (they both publish the books). They’d go after hollywood, though (that’s why we haven’t seen any film adaptations of Cthulhu).
Although, I think it ought to be public domain (if not now, very soon).
Copyright expires 95 years after publication in the US with everything before 1922 also being in the public domain. That means his early work is already out of copyright. His mythos stuff will start hitting the public domain across the next five-to-twenty years. I believe EU law is until 70 years after death, which means all his work is in the public domain here. As you say, the actual ownership of many of his works is disputed and not easy to sort out (which is why it hasn’t been). Lovecraft didn’t relinquish his copyright over his work, but he did… Read more »
Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. I was actually looking at picking up some of the lesser critters. I hope they don’t disappear. Don’t care for this fellow and the plate of spaghetti he’s sucking into his maw.

Thats more than you could say for others … i was being sarcastic btw :p
@brennon it’s quite elementary my old chum… They are returning to nids because they are total awesome WIN 😉
While obviously waiting for better images before making any kind of final judgement, this provisionally looks like rather an awesome tentacle beast to me. There is definitly some Cthuloid influence here, but that is assuredly no bad thing, and a new bug is always welcome among ‘Nid players like myself whether for conversion opportunities, for use on the tabletop, or both.
Though it might be best to keep our new intergalatic visitor away from the promoters of certain forms of… lets just say ‘speciality animation’. I just don’t imagine that ending well…
Looks like an ood
The most terrifying thing will no doubt be the price.
Mmmm… Maybe they’re going to release a new campaign like they did with the orks and the space wolves… Nids vs something else… That’s what I’d do. It seems to have worked pretty well the first time.
So… Will it be a new codex or simply new models and their rules alongside a campaign?
Way I understood it there will not be another codex. It seems that they are going to have rules for these in WD instead but I would not count out possibility of campaign in some point. How ever from what I have understood BA are next line in.
I’m all for that… Dark Eldar vs Nids ? Please! Add Commissar Cain and Jurgen, that’s all we need!
Another week that GW torments me with no new Blood Angel codex *sob!*
Nids are totally awesome mind, but Blood Angels desperately need an updated book. Or the new Nids unit could be for their invasion of Baal, paving the way for a new Blood Angels vs Tyranids box set, a bit like Stormclaw. If that turns out to be the case, all is forgiven as that would TOTALLY ROCK! Hell yeah! 😀
Right with you @slaphead. I think the fact that some of the models are standing on Blood angels may well be a teaser for the box set as you predict. They also have a few other pictures with the Toxicrene using its tentacles on a flesh tearer squad. Fingers crossed!
It looks like a walking and bulkier version of the venomthrope
Oh Zoidberg who let you into this world!
Whenever I look at an image of the Maleceptor I immediately imagine using the rearing up pose and replacing the scything talons with Haruspex crushing claws in order to create a quadropedal Carnifex that looks like an Ultralisk from Starcraft.
The recent re-release of space hulk 3rd ed. (BA vs Nids/gene-stealers), now new Nids? New BA or a new VS box seem very plausible.
