The Tyranids Swarm Into Warhammer 40,000 This Weekend
April 4, 2022 by brennon
Games Workshop is firing up pre-orders for the new Tyranids Codex and Combat Patrol. If you've wanted to dive into Warhammer 40,000 as the endless Xenos swarms then you'll want to keep an eye out this weekend.
Codex: Tyranids // Warhammer 40,000

Things start out with the new Codex. It comes in its standard format or with the full art collector's cover, as always, and contains all of the updated rules for playing as the Tyranids on the tabletop. It comes with all the regular gubbins plus updated Crusade rules for exploring narrative games with your armies. You can choose an existing Hive Fleet, or maybe craft your own, and take them on a feeding frenzy across the galaxy.
New Tyranids Combat Patrol
To get you started, here is the new Combat Patrol that was previewed a few weeks ago.
Combat Patrol: Tyranids // Warhammer 40,000
The set comes with a big Hive Tyrant that can be assembled as the Swarmlord if you prefer. You also get thirty-six Termagants that are going to be holding your objectives on the tabletop. The Hive Tyrant is also backed up by a set of three Tyranid Warriors. I wish that there had been a few Hormagaunts in there, especially if you were looking to run the Hive Tyrant as a Swarmlord. It seems a shame that the Termagants aren't a hybrid kit now - there are a fair few weapon options across these squads though.
Coming in at around twenty-five power, this should be a decent way to get started with the Tyranids. Your games won't be long but a Combat Patrol-size force allows you to get your head around the basics of the rules.
The Parasite Of Mortrex
In addition to the new Codex and the Combat Patrol, we also have the coming of The Parasite Of Mortrex.

Swooping down onto the battlefield, The Parasite Of Mortrex is a deadly close combat threat. It can also infect foes that it leaves alive so that Ripper Swarms can burst forth from their flesh and start devouring those nearby. It's a good thing that the Combat Patrol comes with a few swarms that could be used for just such a purpose.
New Tyranids Dice & Datacards
The new Codex means a new set of Datacards. These are handy for tracking your psychic powers and stratagems of choice during games. I have a set for my Aeldari and they help me avoid a lot of flicking through the book!

You might also be quick enough to get your hands on a set of the Tyranid themed dice. The purple looks nice and the design of them is clear too. Perhaps this could be a nice way to cap off a collection if you already have quite a lot of Tyranids waiting in the wings?
Make sure to let me know what you make of the new Tyranid releases coming our way this weekend. Are you going to be snapping them up?

Might be time to dust off my nids, I’ll probably be getting the codex, cards and the parasite. Maybe I’ll start a spring clean project for them as I am pretty sure the Hormagaunts & Termagants I have don’t have more than primer on them.
Oh sweet, new Tyranid creature.
So you said you have a bug problem then?
You do get a lot of models in that patrol box and a pretty good choice of units. Some of the boxes are a bit hit and miss but this one is a pretty soild start for new players. Also gives me hope the imperial guard box will be just 40 guardsmen 🙂
That would be good haha
Needs a commissar too though
Sweet Jeebus no more ruddy Commissars! 🙂
Commissars are what made Imperial Guard so unique.
Without them they’re cannon fodder …
(Do commisars still shoot their own troops to improve morale ? or am I thinking of a different game ?)
Those are the lads (and lasses). They absolutely are cool as heck but currently you get one in the Start Collecting box so we’ve all got tons of them ?
