The Tyranids Get A Proper Upgrade With Reveals For Warhammer 40,000
July 17, 2023 by brennon
Games Workshop revealed the winners of the mini-campaign that was run in the wake of the release of the Leviathan boxed set for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. The Battle For Oghram ended with the Tyranids defeating the Space Marines allowing Games Workshop to show off a whole host of ace new and updated miniatures for the range.
Genestealers // Warhammer 40,000

We start with a look at the excellent new miniatures for the Genestealers. These miniatures hadn't had an update for a very, very long time and so it's nice to see a more dynamic set of four-armed killers ready to butcher everything in their path and lay the groundwork for a Hive Fleet invasion.
The miniatures still retain a lot of their original look and feel but with a little bit more movement in the sculpts to match the way they move in-world. Whilst not pictured above, the set also has enough head options to give them the tentacled Ymgarl heads. If you want to introduce a bit more mythos into your Genestealer unit then you'll be able to do so!
No longer will people be trying to scrounge the miniatures from scavenged Space Hulk boxes in order to make nice-looking Genestealer units!
New Hormagaunts & Termagants!
As well as the Genestealers getting their much-needed update, the Battleline troops of the Tyranids are also getting some updated plastic sets. We start with the Termagants who got push-fit miniatures in Leviathan but now have a funky new set packed with different weapon options.
Termagants // Warhammer 40,000
These ranged troops are going to swarm across the tabletop and look to hold down objectives with their bevvy of bio-engineered weapons. The classic fleshborerer can be replaced by a range of other weapons including spinefists, devourers, shardlaunchers, stranglewebs, and spike rifles. These are weapons that the Termagants haven't really been able to use in a long time and so having access to these is great for those wanting more options for dealing with different opponents.
If you prefer getting up close and personal, you can also introduce some new dynamic Hormagaunt miniatures to your Hive Fleet.
Hormagaunts // Warhammer 40,000
Equipped with their deadly scything talons, these creatures are going to be a terror for your enemy to deal with when they surge into close combat. I can sense that a lot of folks are going to be running huge swarms of these, going all the way up to twenty of the fiends. Much like with the Genestealers, the Hormgaunts haven't been massively changed from their previous incarnations but they are posed a little more interestingly and there is more detail worked into their flesh and armour.
New Lictor Miniatures - Stealthy Killers!
If you're planning to ambush your foes then you'll also want to be picking up the new and improved Lictors for your Tyranids. The new plastic kit allows you to make two variants starting with the Neurolictor.
Neurolictor // Warhammer 40,000
The Neurolictor is a slithering addition to the Tyranids that is equally as deadly in close combat as the traditional Lictor. As you might have guessed, the Neurolictor is able to use some substantial psychic abilities in order to mask its approach and strike fear into the heart of the enemy. The classic Lictor (seen in the background below) is still not to be trifled with and is going to be a terrifying prospect to deal with when it strikes from your backlines and starts tearing your allies apart.
New Lictors //Warhammer 40,000
These killers will then be using those lovely tentacles to draw you closer to their jaws where they can crack open your skull and suck your brains out! The "ALIEN" threat of the Lictors has always been fun and I can see a lot of folks picking these up and using them to ambush their opponents. You've also got the new Deathleaper sculpt which was previewed a few weeks ago. You can check that out HERE.
New Biovores & Pyrovores
More is also on the cards for those wanting to unleash deadly, living artillery on the battlefield. There are some new plastic kits on the way for the Biovores and Pyrovores which will be saturating the battlefield with explosive spore mines.
Biovore // Warhammer 40,000
The Biovore has been reworked to have a much wider form that makes it work as a walking weapons platform. I still quite like the big lumbering version that we had previously but I understand why they've gone with this new take on the bug. You can also call on the Pyrovore which is going to reduce your enemies to goo so that your Hive Fleet can consume the biomass and use it to fuel their invasion plans.
A Terrifying New Tyranid Foe - The Norn Emissary!
Last but decidedly not least for the new Tyranid preview was the coming of one of their biggest and deadliest killers. The Norn Emissary and Norn Assimilator are bigger and nastier than your typical Hive Tyrant and have often been given a very focused task by the Norn Queen.
Norn Emissary // Warhammer 40,000
Brute strength and powerful psychic abilities allow the Norn Emissary to smash its way through the toughest of foes to bring down its intended target. Despite its size, the Norn Emissary also has an unmatched agility that allows it to get close and bring down that planetary commander or similarly powerful figure in your opponent's army. It's an assassin as big as a house!
If there is a particularly tough target to crush then you might want to send in the Norn Assimilator instead. Whilst the Emissary is a little more "thinky", the Assimilator is much more "smashy".
Norn Assimilator // Warhammer 40,000
Both of these are terrifying nightmares made flesh and are going to be deadly to face on the tabletop. I love that they tower over things like the Wraithlord (see above) giving them a suitable presence on the tabletop that befits their abilities.
Hopefully, Tyranid players were happy with their new miniatures!

I generally like them!
I find the brains outside their carapaces to be stupid. Looks like a video game boss’ weak point!
Ooh it’s a bug hunt.
In related news, GW US (and Canada, as Memphis covers, poorly) customer service is down to a crawl. A WEEK ago I received a damaged Liber Imperialis for Heresy. This is the auto-reply: Thank you for your email! Please note that we are experiencing high volume due to the Leviathan release. Tyranid Hormagaunts have us pinned down — we’re working as fast as we can — to break out and smash their lines — and we anticipate that we will have all queries answered within 4 business days. Clearly they’re not even able to manage that, as I’m STILL waiting… Read more »
I do like them. Actually there isnt a single model i am not a fan of except… the new screamer killer which just doesnt work for me, but probably because i love the carnifex model. The Norn Emmisary is a wonderbeast!
