The Thanatar Siege-Automata Stomps Out Of Forge World
June 27, 2014 by brennon
Forge World have once again decided bigger is most decidedly better and unleashed the Thanatar Siege-Automata on the tabletop. See what you think of this rather brilliant looking addition to the Mechanicum's arsenal...
The Thanatar is meant to, as you might imagine, siege things! It has a Hellex pattern plasma mortar that will be lobbing huge gobs of plasma over the walls of defensive outposts and melting all inside. I'm sure it could do a number on the actual walls themselves as well. They are also incredibly well armoured despite their back line role in the fighting and small arms fire has no effect whatsoever on it's frame.
As you can tell it's also rather bloody huge! It stands at least another miniature above it's closest rival in terms of height and looks awesome for it. Forge World do make some rather amazing stuff and while it's cool to think about Titans I think something as big as this at this scale is even better. It's certainly more wield-able on the tabletop!
Thanks to deaddave for poking us in the direction of this one!
What do you think of this Siege-Automata?

Forgeworld really do make some lovely models, It looks great and is another perfect candidate for some interesting conversion work.
I agree with you, Brennon, this looks great in comparison to titans and I much prefer this model to Forge World’s Cerastus Knight-Lancer. This is a beautiful model that really looks like an engine built for mass destruction.
That is truly awesome, I don’t think the price tag is that bad for so big a model either. I still can’t afford it mind but one can dream 🙂
Is it just me or does the weapon on the back/right shoulder resemble some of those in the Transformer movies? Ironhide has something like this: http://transformersdarkofthemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Ironhide
Literally dribbling… I must get that checked out
And DAT’ASS…
It is spectacular.
And quite good value for a FW model of this size.
I actually couldn’t believe how cheap this is for its size. Stunning model too.
I wonder if FW price their models more on the complexity of the casting than the actual size? If you look at the photo of the bits on FW’s website, it’s amazing how few parts there are in this model. That in itself speaks volumes about how brilliant the FW designers are these days.
So which faction is this from? Follow up question – who are the Astra Millitarium? They confuse me too.
This is a Horus Heresy model for the Mechanicum, the forerunner of 40k’s Adeptus Mechanicus. Astra Millitarum is the new name for 40k’s Imperial Guard … not to be confused with 30k’s Imperial Army 🙂
Thanks @erastus. Does GW actually call things “30k”? I’ve never heard them use that for their models or books. Don’t they just allude to the Horus Heresy timeline?
Also, if you field a 30k army, who can you fight other than other Imperial players? Probably Chaos, but I thought factions like Tau were only just discovered in the 40k universe. And since Imperial Tech and visuals are different, wouldn’t that be true of Dark Eldar, Orks and Tau too?
I just find it a bit messy.
forgeworld have their own rule books for the 30K great crusade/horus heresy timeline. you won’t hear gamers-workshop refer to it in any 40k codex/rule books. The horus heresy books are absolutely stunning, they cost a lot of money, £70 each, but i am more than happy to pay that much for a book as beautiful as they are. forgeworld are slowly going to be covering pretty much every aspect of the horus heresy with 18 out of the 20 legions, imperial army, custodians, primarchs, sisters of silience, basically everything 🙂 you can play 30K army lists against 40K army lists,… Read more »
Thanks for the info! Very much appreciated. I’ll take a look at forge world.
Similar first impression; I really quite like design. Then I realised how big it was, that’s deceptive having a similar profile to the other Automata. Finally I realised how reasonable the price is for its size! Seriously considering one of these now. Aesthetically it’s a great looking piece. But then again I expect no less from Mr Hayes. @Erastus: That’s one of the considerations I’m sure they factor into the pricing, yes. Volume of resin + mold complexity and ongoing replacement cost. Often smaller models which have particularly large volumes of silicon wrecking parts or undercuts tend to be priced… Read more »
I’m in love …
What a beast ! Love him !
