New Tau On The Horizon & Khorne Gets Reinforced In Age Of Sigmar
September 16, 2015 by brennon
There are two big updates coming out of Games Workshop this week for both Warhammer 40,000 down the line and Age Of Sigmar this week. The Tau Destroyers are striding into battle alongside some tweaked infantry if the leaked images are to be believed...
Tau Battlesuits
The big Tau Destroyer looks like it's armed to the teeth and while Forge World are working on their own project it looks like Games Workshop wanted to add to the range too. You can see the Destroyer and the rest of the Tau leaks HERE.
I particularly like the new design of the Tau helmets which seem a bit more bulky. I would assume it's just for one particular unit but it's looking great. I knew there was a reason I liked Tau!
Bloodshed In Battle
The armies of Khorne in Age of Sigmar are also going to be getting something new this week with the Slaughterpriest and Skullgrinder coming out as additional characters to back up your troops in game. You can see more on their statistics and models HERE.
The Slaughterpriest, the more lanky of the two (I imagine) is the better model of the pair I think. I like the idea of this lanky and sinewy looking man as part of the Khornate army (by comparison) instead of someone stocky.
The Skullgrinder on the other hand looks ok although still has too much of a Warhammer 40,000 vibe to it.
Are you drawn to any of these new models?

New Tau look rather good with quick first look.
Not normally a fan of the Tau minis, but the big one looks pretty good. I presume the role of the Skullgrinder is to follow the Skullcrusher around and grind up the skulls that the Skullcrusher crushes. That’s probably what the French text says…
Have this weeks wd in hand, cover text is:
“Chosen of Khorne
The Blood Will Flow!
The slaughterpreist and skullgrinder spearhead the slaying”
Skullgrinders are basically black smiths of khorne he carries a “brazen anvil” rather than a bloodhammer or murderdoofer, so the 40k comparision is apt as they are basically a techmarine, and would just need a servo arm and bolt pistol to kitbash as such 🙂
How many skulls could a skullcrusher crush, if a skullcrusher could crush skulls 🙂 .
…eight?
The 40k players in the clubs where I am when they heard of the Tau destroyer was ‘ Ah well that’s the rules broken again’
One of the reasons I stepped out of 40k, GW just change the goal posts too often with their rules. I know we all like a fairly constant stream of new releases but sometimes I do think you can have too much too quickly??
I don’t care for GW rules period. I do not like alot of their minis even nowadays but damn I just love Tau and have since they were first ever released. These new guys look so cool I just wish they were a bit cheaper as I do want the big guys but they probably going to be a bit too expensive to justify buying for onepagerules kill team games lol I agree that the new infantry look better 🙂
The rules are horrible imo, though as an old tau player i must say i like what they did with the battle suits and warriors.
New tau look pretty decent as far as models go, seems like every 40k faction has a mini titan now apart from the necrons, although id personally just build one out of loads of warriors standing on each others shoulders, transformers style. Would look better than that awful giant terminator in salvation, the iron giant was more intimidating than that abomination…
Dark eldar too 🙁 sadtimes
No reason you couldn’t paint a gimp suit on a wraith knight 😉
Or less facetiously play a harlequin army, with DE and Craft World allies, then you wouldn’t have to have a gimp knight
…now you’ve said that i’m seeing it stuff it’s goolies between it’s legs and asking the age old question…
If I was going to make a necron Titan scale walker I’d buy two Dreamforge Mortis leviathans and a ghost barge and make a skeletal centaur by using one Mortis as the front, attach the ghost ark to the back of the pelvic area so it looks like a horse rib cage. Then attach the second Mortis hips and legs to the back as the hind quarter. Just need to make sure to use the correct scale Mortis (they make 15mm and 28mm versions).
Tau helmets look great! The bodies themselves seem the same as the old ones tho..of which I’ve got hundreds. Wonder if I could get them seperately…
Got a Nurgle Rotbringers battalion already. Might have to make a Khorne force too. Those 2 models great, prefer the Slaughterpriest though. He has the typical Khorne mentality, walk softly and carry A BIG FREAKIN’ AXE!!!
I personally have been liking the new Age Of Sigmar stuff, but as others have said, I would like to see some of the new factions now. Also, is it me, or do the legs of the Slaughterpriest look slightly out of proportion, or is that just the photo?
All looks great; the Stormsurge is completely over the top (and I can certainly understand why it might not be to everyone’s taste), but I….almost love it for that reason alone.
The Firewarriors look good (the helmet now has 2 lenses), and seem to have been bulked up, although I don’t see why they actually got a resculpt as the originals I thought were pretty good (perhaps with better pictures, I’ll see a greater improvement).
If the white colour scheme is the new one for Tau, I hope GW release some of painting videos for it.
Yes the white colour scheme is a vast improvement over the tan scheme, looks alot crisper
I’m not sure if they’re going to be new Firewarriors. To me they seem like a different type of unit altogether. If you look very carefully at the backpacks, they look like they could have thrusters on the end of them. That’s how they come across to me anyway. 🙂
I agree with the white paint scheme. Suits them better.
I do like the new head gear n guns and the new destroyers… The head reminds me of the drone from portal 2 :/
Good job I only play just for the giggles and not a huge tournament player …… I might as well not use my greatest threat to the galaxy ( chaos ) army for a while the codex is pretty unusable …. Roll out the guard from now on …. Loving your content on your aircav and tank army’s!
Nothing in there that interests me. I like the Tau mini’s as they are, for an alien faction in Traveler, and now I’m glad I rushed to pick up enough models to make up a combat team. The new helmet design doesn’t appeal to me at all, and I’m not really interested in any of the bigger suits or vehicles, except for the old devilfish APC. I’ve picked up enough bits here and there to make four of them now. The new paint scheme looks like the 50’s fridge in my garage. As for the Khorne dudes… meh. I like… Read more »
Somebody call Snake – we’ve found Metal Gear Tau… 😉 I like these incoming Tau suits. The Ghostkeel nicely combines elements of Riptide and Stealth Suit design to create some kind of cloaked heavy suit, and the Stormsurge is suitably bonkers in best anime/Kojima style, and seems to be the fever dream of a missile enthusiast. It certainly looks like it is well suited to be a heavy fire support unit – the Broadside of Riptide variants, complete with extra stabilisers built into the legs. I also like the redesign of the Firewarriors, and their helmets in particular. As for… Read more »
pretty pretty battlemech
The Tau look great.
Also if you look at the last picture, you’ll see that they have two types of troops. One with the newer looking helmet and another group with the older looking helmet but with less armour. None on the legs or big pads.
Glad they’re not getting rid of the old style. For me, the newer helmet looks like a step back. I’ve been mixing and matching the fire warrior and pathfinder stuff in my alien “platoon” organization, with two lighter support squads of infantry, with longer range weapons, and an assault squad with stubby carbines, more grenades, and the heavy armour. Here’s a question wrt the helmet: Why is the lens on the left eye, rather than the right? Seems logical for it to be on the right side if you’re using it to sight your weapons. Is there a reason in… Read more »
Now that you mentioned pathfinder they do look like the pathfinder models that they have at the moment. I thought it was a dual kit at first.
Also I do like how the painting is much better than before, taste on colour scheme being personal. I like that the weathering is much better than normal for them. They always make Tau look like they just came out of factory. This is what I prefer over super clean.
About the Age of Sigmar Khorne reinforcements. I’m upset that GW keeps releasing reinforcements for the armies that came in the box, but haven’t even released basic forces for the other factions. I want to see what the new “elves”, dwarves, and skaven look like before I decide to maybe pick up the game.
Agreed. These new models for Stormcast and Khorne are great, but there are factions that remain untouched. I’d like to see some of the other factions start to get new models.
Possibly, this is because they have not released book 2 for The Realmgate Wars yet. Hopefully when that is released (I suspect they are holding on to this for Christmas), we will see more factions like the Duardin and Orruks.
To reiterate, why is the lens on the opposite side of where it should be, to sight on a weapon? I’m not asking this out of disrespect… just want to know. Help me @vetruviangeek , fluff meister!
The normal reason for any sculpting decision by GW is that it looks good. I’d be very surprised if more thought has gone into it than that…
To answer your question @cpauls1, I do recall long ago reading that the Tau have far superior eyesight in the range of what they can see compared to humans. They see ultraviolet and radiation and such that we can’t. But it’s all at a far shorter range. In other words we can see farther out clearer than they. I would expect the lens eye on the helmet is on that side so it will not be blocked by the rifle. If they do have short eyesight then that lens could be more of a camera feed so they can see… Read more »
While as angelicdespot says aesthetics probably play a large role in this decision, manpug is correct with regards to the fluff. In the Tau background (and especially in the earlier codexes where it was emphasised more) it is mentioned that while Tau can perceive a broader spectrum of radiation wavelengths than humans (giving them superior low light and otherwise obscured visibility vision), they have a tendency toward marked shortsightedness paired with a relatively slow ocular focusing reflex compared to humans, and this explains why their base ballistic skill is so average without marker light support despite having all manner of… Read more »
Making imaginary worlds come alive is a skill 🙂 dont always agree with you but its always an interesting read !
If everyone always agreed with one another @hatamoto, the world would be a much less interesting place. I am glad you enjoy my humble scribblings.
Thanks for the info @manpug and @vetruviangeek . Makes a bit of sense now.
Definatly
the tau titan thingy looks good.
I like the Tau, always had a soft spot for them and I’ve already been painting mine white for years!
Whenever I look at the Stormsurge I am reminded of the scene in Ironman where a pre-Ironman (and still weapon producing, war profiteering, womanising, and general all round kind of jerk) Tony Stark is demonstrating the efficacy of the Jericho missile system, the weapon “you only have to fire once”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBC1Qob27sM Though I don’t imagine the Tau would do Tony’s line in military/industrial complex bombast, and probably wouldn’t throw in a high tech minibar with each purchase over 500 million either. Given the intimidating looks of the Stormsurge, It is perhaps unsurprising that non-Tau players are starting to worry a… Read more »
