The Stormfang & Stormwolf Howl Into Battle For Warhammer 40k
July 26, 2014 by brennon
The Stormfang and Stormwolf variants of the new Space Wolf flyer are now available to pre-order from the Games Workshop website. See what you think of both the gunship variant and the transport one below...
The Stormfang variant (top) is the gunship of the two and comes with that rather dangerous looking Helfrost cannon which will turn you to ice with its strength check roll once you've been wounded by it. Very nasty. The Stormwolf in comparison is a more mediocre craft with the transport capacity and ability to drop sixteen troops into the battle with an assault ramp meaning they will be howling into combat very quickly indeed.
We talk more about both of these craft on The Weekender today but what do you think about Space Wolves getting a flyer?
Let us know!

I actually like this, don’t know why, I just do.
It screams out for an Ork conversion too.
Yes I thought Ork conversion as well. That was until I seen the price tag 🙁
The Space Wolves were my favourite chapter…
Leman Russ is spinning in his grave. Utter crap.
One of the worst kits so far that GW has made.
I think the fairest thing you can say about this kit is that it’s really dividing people. Some people honestly love it, some people think it’s an ugly piece of crap. At least people are actually discussing it and not ignoring it. There are a lot of companies who wish their releases got half the attention GW’s do, even if it isn’t all positive.
Source on that statement?
It’s very blocky, almost the epic flying brick that was the first thunderhawk. But for me it’s kinda got something, bigger wings I think would have been nicer
Definately can see someone doing something stunningly orky with it. One for @happyhowler maybe
The Stormfang is the most hilariously bad contraption I’ve ever seen. It’s just awful. Hopelessly awful.
Maybe put cockpit on front and give it larger wings (anyone know how to photoshop that random idea?)
I think the small wings are to fit in with making it look like a wolf’s head.
Yeah, GW website description pretty much confirms that “The wolf’s head silhouette of the Stormwolf strikes fear into the hearts of any who face the Sons of Russ”. Hopefully can twist the engines round so they are pointing more towards the ground.
I love it, its like a landingcraft but for space. Wings could possibly have been a bit bigger thou.
this is freakin awesome, love at first sight, need 😀
The ‘howl’ is the wind tearing the frame apart as it shudders through the school zone speed limit threshold 🙂
OMG, and I just saw the price! This is like debating the health benefits of a $25 quart of milk.
Just a quick question . . . and apologies if this sounds silly. This thing is a drop ship? As in trans-atmospheric (launches in orbit, punches into atmosphere, delivers troops to the ground)? Okay, is that really a shape that suggests “why yes, we can totally survive re-entry into a planet’s atmosphere?” Or do these things have force-shields or something?
Better. They are protected by implausible but impenetrable layers of fluff ;-).
Kind of reminds me of a an overweight BSG Viper.
Items like this and the Stormtalon (I think) being scaled down-ish versions of Forgeworld models reminds me of the mini-rigs that were out with Star Wars years ago…Google them for a flashback. 🙂
This model is the Shark assault boat. It looks almost identical to the Imperial Navy assault boat
from Battlefleet gothic. Funny how they recycle 15 year old designs.
I can accept this model as a flying vehicle only in zero atmosphere, as a boarding craft. In atmospheric conditions I can see it operating as little more than an alternative to a drop pod. Trying to accept that it will fly and maneuver in atmosphere breaks acceptable fantasy, for me.
Have to say i love these – flying longboats. I can just see them diving down onto Prospero and depositing the rout to do their work!
I like the flying bricks can see them working in space as assault craft it’s just a bit difficult to see them flying in air.
But in saying that a lot of people would say that about the GUPPY transport planes that are flying airbus parts all over Europe.
Now I remember what it looks like:

Despite having a ridiculous debate in another post about these, I have to say since seeing their side profile I’m now not keen on them. From any other angle I personally think they look like they have the appropriate utilitarian 40k/SM bulk, but from the side I think the raised-floor rear makes it look like it break off from the rest of the vehicle. Still prefer it to the rest of the space vikings though…;-P
this is going to kill some people, but I’m pretty sure they tried to build a flying wolf head. Once you realize this, you will have a hard time unseeing it.
No doubt about it. It’s pretty obvious that’s what it’s meant to be.
Had a shock @ the price they are asking for it .. and that was wayland games discount price
I still actually quite like it despite its shortcomings and agree it does seem to have split opinions. I considered getting one to see what I could do with it painting wise, right up until they revealed the price. After watching the Infinity starter set video earlier today and seeing what I could get for only a few quid more, I’ll sadly be passing on the Stormwolf for now.
That really puts things in perspective doesnt it
Absolutely, without a doubt a Space Marine flyer. All the complaining reminds me of the Stormraven and Stormtalon, yet I see those in every C:SM player’s army.
…because they are good in game, not for the quality of the model’s design. Sometimes you just have to accept what a model looks like and get on with it, if you’re a gamer.
I need six! Want to make a Viking long boat army.
I like it. I will get a kit to build the transport version definitely.
Just to put some perspective on this, GW is a large company by the standards of the hobby/wargames industry, and this is what they roll out as a serious mini. Hawk Wargames is a relatively new and small company, and they are rolling out a mass of new material for the new Resistance faction that has a wealth of detail, a variety of origins (salvaged civilian, military and alien technology) but an overall aesthetic harmony that really makes this GW ‘creation’ look very third rate indeed.
While Hawk is great (i got the starter box at the last Salute) they are also starting from fresh. GW has to bring out new miniture to add to an existing collection that adds something new, while not ruining what they have done already. Also GW is so large now, there is no way any mini they make is going to appeal to all their existing customers. Hopefully this goldern era of gaming will push everyone on to do better – i think you can already see the effect of increased competition in GW’s faster release cycle and their aim… Read more »
They would have to lower prices if this is the standard they are going for, in order to keep up .. imo of course
