A New Realm Of Battle Board Coming To Warhammer 40,000
July 15, 2014 by brennon
It's time to start a bit of urban warfare it seems with a preview of the next White Dwarf from Games Workshop. The new Realm of Battle Board is named Sector Imperialis and you can see how it looks below...
As you can see it's a proper urbanised landscape free from any kind of natural terrain at all. This is rather cool and it must be said it's awesome to think up an entirely urban board that could well be something like a spaceport or hab-centre in the middle of an Imperial city. There's certainly no mistaking its an Imperial city either with that huge Aquila emblazoned on the middle of it!
Word is that you'll also be getting a bit of an update on Dark Vengeance and how that now fits into the world of hobby and Warhammer 40,000.
Are you going to pick up a Sector Imperialis set?

I am not overly huge fan of these Realm of Battle boards but I admit that this one does look rather nice. Not something that I would get mind you but it does look nice.
Looks like a load of the gw 40k buildings laid out flat. Why would you have arches on the ground? Plenty of skulls for people to trip over too. Health and safety would have a field day there.
I
I’d have thought Health & Safety was quite low on the list of concerns in the 40,000th millennium!
Oh my, no. Quite the opposite. Health & Safety is concern #1 in the Imperium of Man. Nothing was more important to our dead god emperor than the happiness and well-being of his people which is why we have the strictest of worker safety regulations and citizen support services for all manner of physical and mental ailments. Remember, the most important hygiene is that which prevents the warp from corrupting your mind. If you see anyone gazing overlong into the eyes of one of those thousands of superfluous skulls plastered over every surface, that’s a clear sign they’re hearing the… Read more »
I’ve been thinking about investing in something like a Realm of Battle board for ages, I’ve seen a few in person at places like Salute and GW and they seem like a very good quality (though pricey!) alternative to my desk! 😀 This looks excellent too from the little I can see of it. Not only that but Forgeworld do some excellent add on tiles for the RB board too, so that’s always a bonus! On the other hand I feel I’d get more satisfaction out of building my own from left over gubbins I can string together with glue,… Read more »
Yeah, that’s ‘Tablescapes’ by Secret Weapon Miniatures. Should be out pretty soon now…
Yes, that’s the one! Cheers! 🙂
Really puzzled by these too. Just looks like horizontal sprues laid out. The starter set looks ok though, despite the lack of troops for the orks.
Also, they are a one trick pony with all those eagles and skulls. I guess its their TM, but it is the one thing that hampers their unit sales imho. This is why mdf terrain has done so well, it can be used for most games rather than just one.
It may be they think that if they make their 40K terrain so specific and defined, then most of the playerbase will feel like they have to buy it for their games of 40K to look “correct”.
Thats what I was referring to Ben when I said one trick pony, hehe. Imho though generic scenery works just as well, and on some cases even more so, Mantic Deadzone stuff as one example. This can be used for 40k, deadzone or infinith, thereby increasing the value of the product proportionally. Where as the GW always appears less valuable to a degree. Remove the skulls etc, or make them into their own sprue to stick where needed would, imho, improve the product whilst also allowing it to remain the same/similar, if this makes sense.
I’m not necessarily saying they’re correct. I don’t have access to their sales data to know if their generic scenery sells (or sold) better than IP specific. It seems such an obvious way to widen terrain sales that for them not to do it suggests that they must see an advantage in it.
But if they could make the specific 40k theme stuff skull etc on a seperate sprue, all would see as a possible buy. Winner winner chicken dinner, hehe. Mantic have set the bar imho for wargames scenery for scifi. Hoping they do bigger pieces too I.e. 6x6inch or 12x12inch floor tiles, would be great for their dungeon crawler. Im currently learning inkscape in order to laser cut acrylic for these large pieces and such. With a lot of people at my club are VERY skilled at using the laser cutter, mwe are going to be producing some really nice items.… Read more »
I’m also a bit puzzled by the sideways arches. For all intents and purposes it looks like everyone put on their magnetized boots and are fighting on the outside of a space hulk.
You can make your own terrain for next to nothing. There’s a horde of information and tutorials on Pinterest. Not a lot of talent required… just a bit of patience. If you’re painting mini’s then you already have that in abundance.
What the hell is this? The could have spent the time, money and talent doing something really cool, but we have this weird confused side flat building components laid on their side? From the images provided t really doesn’t work!
Not worth the price. for the same cost you can make yourself a far superior board. You can even cast the whole floor in resin if you wanted on top of some Back to Base ix boards, which by the way are cheap. Just get two sets of the Battle Frame 5300, sand the top of the Battle Frame with some coarse sand paper so stuff can cling to it and throw some plaster or resin over top or if you need to, throw down a thin sheet of Styrofoam down first than your plaster/ resin. They’re 300mm each (11.8inches)… Read more »
I don’t doubt that’s correct but I would never do it. Something like that isn’t about the cost but about the time. I’d rather pay somebody else to do it and save my hobby time for doing things I like.
lol
The first Realm of Battle Board kit was a terrible piece of engineering. Almost as if it wasn’t made my people who actually play the game.
I’d like to think this one is different but eh…. not even the promo pics have models that look like they’re having a nice time standing up.
While not as anti-RoB as some (we do have a couple sets still kicking about for Epic and snow themes, I don’t really get this set at all design wise. I agree some of the features and textures don’t make a lot of sense and just look a bit of a mash-up mess if I’m honest.
Be interesting to see how Secret Weapon’s forthcoming ‘Tablescape’ ruined roads set stacks up against it.
Every time i see shots of this it makes me respect the Forgeworld city tiles all the more.
Bad news about starter set…I want some new minis…not re-packed Dark Vengeance…=(
Well, it’s a bit early for the Starter Set, expect to see it in two years time, or a year if you’re lucky.
Dark Vengeance is easily one of the greatest Starter Sets ever made, so let’s enjoy that for a few more years eh :p
Was too quick to see them releasing a full set of new sculpts, had they done that then we wouldn’t have seen the new orks and things.
I just got the new product email on this. I must say that the price is prohibitive especially considering how limited in terrain options not to mention just ugly.
