The pennants will look cool on a field. The only thing I would suggest is to point all the mech swords. They have enough of a cool look with the split, but a V is going to catch in a charge and they will loose their lance. A ^ on them would be more uniform across the different types and you can still keep different lengths if you wanted.
Concur!
Power Lance’s will cut and do not get caulght in things.
I really, really like the banners. It’s 40k, over the top is always better. And I know other people have said it, but I think the guns are the weakest point so far, and I think they’re what needs to look the most sci fi. Maybe adding lasgun barrels onto the end or something? If you can get the guns looking 40k enough, everything else will fall into place once they’re all painted and everything.
I have plans for the guns 😉
Looking good buddy, there really is something awesome about a cavalry unit in 40K. I do like the pennant set up for each miniature, in my mind I would have the unit one a three or four fold pennant and have the smaller ones as a triangle or single fold pennants. This would stop the unit being lost under a sea of long larger pennants in the tabletop.
Are you thinking of adding anything on the horses to identify the different units horses.
I’ll probably not signify the horses, but mark units with symbols or markings on each pennant.
If you have any black imperial aquila decals, you could use them as brands on the flanks of a couple of the horses, probably the horses of the ranking troops.
You could use a dark brown over the decal as the main color of the brand to give it a little visual interest and leaving the black outline as the “shading”
Well saying a Vox Box passes orders over, you could always say the trumpets are the same as Vox Boxes for the unit.
Your going to laugh at this one…. I have three boxes of five Horseman, they come one with a sword other four hunting lances, on a plastic horse… NEVER BEEN PAINTED over the 15 years ive had them…
I think they will look great, just remembering back to some of the guard forces that the Gaunts Ghosts run in to, like a group that wear diamond shaped scale armour that either changes to the environment or reflects the environment? Something like that.
What I’m getting at is, this force will fit the 41st millennium as there are tonnes of different styles to the guard. There’s bound to be a world that parade their troops in flamboyant uniforms for sure!
Yes. Looking good. I wouldn’t make the trumpets leaders. Would make separate leaders. Would make leaders for the infantry as well. Don’t know how to make them stand out but maybe you have some stuff for it in your bitboxes. A leader per sqaud Always looks cool I think. Count the trumpets as Voxcasters.
Enjoying this a lot, i’ve been thinking recently about starting 40k, and i confess this is making me want to give it a go even more so. i’ve been looking all over the place thinking what other historicals can i shove into the 41st millenium.
Just wanted to say that with regards to the vox casters, i have always had a dislike of the stubby fat aerial thing. After seeing your Brush Bristle aerials on your tank project, which i thought looked fantastic, have you considered making them all a bit ‘twangy’ ? (as Warren would say).
Maybe use the Forge World Death korp of Krieg command upgrade set or something simular from an other company to make your squad commanders. It will make your squads look great I think.
Think the entire unit with pennants will look awesome, but maybe cut the down in length 25%. Still nice and big. One other simple conversion you coul do for the horse to make it look like an augmented mount (which is a rule for the Krieg horses) is to jus glue a small bit of 40k plastic mechanical bit on the left or right of the neck to make it look like it is where they insert chemicals to augment the mount. The one I’m thinking of is the breather mask with the small hose that runs to a small… Read more »
Looking great Jono. I strill insist on adding lasrifles somewhere on calvary unit. backs, strap tp saddle and around horses. Banners aree the way to go. it will make thgem a center peace of whole army.
The pennants are still the way to go, i will be interested in how you pose the pennants for the horizontal lances. Could you add an imperium symbol on the horses rump like they have been branded? I think the commander for each unit should be different and keep the hornblowers as voxcasters. Could you also give one rider a banner rather than a pennant?
Brilliant models. They look great already and will look stunning with the pennants flying! Can’t wait for the next vid…
I think the pennant are going to look great. Also like the trumpets as the the leaders. Looking forward to the flamers.
The troops will look great painted up john
Converting metal models is tough… You will be limited in what you can do. So, here’s the thing. You can do what you want, but if you want your army to be somewhat correct you need to take into account the actual gear they are allowed to carry. For the Rough Riders it comes from the Index Imperium 2: armed with las pistol, chainsword, hunting lance, frag grenades. The sergeant can be armed with: plasma pistol, power axe, power lance, power maul, power sword. For the generic troopers, I would try to make the muskets more modern. Easiest thing is… Read more »
I think the cav leaders with the trumpets could benefit from a large speaker/megaphone type device on their backs. Something they’ve repurposed from the Eclessiarchy. Though that may stink of heresy.
I like the pennants.
I’d suggest painting them before you put them onto the models. It depends what design you’re thinking of but even putting a straight line down the middle in pencil now will help once the pennants are bent/wavy.
I would use Skitarii vanguard/ranger backpacks as voxcasters. They are a bitt smaller but have all the anntenna and walkie talkie bits you need.
Power Lances are cool, but I think a pennant on each and every one of them is a tad overkill.
There is no kill like overkill 😉
The only thing I would change are the length of the Lances. With the swords mounted on top they look a bit top heavy to me. It feels like the riders wouldn’t be able to hold them straight in a charge. I would also suggest small banners for the reason that the long lances would drag on the ground if places horizontally as they are charging into the enemy. So 1 or 2 guys flying the units collors, and the rest of them just a small square or triangular pennant.
looking great
Well, where to start? You have a busy week at work and then spend Sunday evening binge watching @johnlyons do an entire week on a brilliant IG conversion project. Terrific stuff, thanks. We were only just discussing this the other week on the site: http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/painting/forum/topic/alternative-imperial-guard-army/ with @elessar2590 and his project with Perry plastic Zouaves. There must be something in the air. Some thoughts then – totally love all the ideas so far, power sword tips for the lances, huge pennants, adding plastic gear to 40K them up a bit, changing some guns and adding flamers and standard pattern heavy weapons… Read more »
Love the ideas, go with them 😀
