What John is really asking: “Dear lord, I think I’m going absolutely mental. Please let me do something else!”
Looking good, you can really see the progress being made. I totally understand the burnt out feeling, I always get the same thing when I try and tackle a project bigger than 1 or 2 squads or vehicles at a time.
Having got some guild ball for xmas I can recommend that size of 5 or 6 models with a bit of cartoony style as being a good way to get some hobby mojo back.
Yep, there’s a lot you need to do for a big project like this. I’d recommend you actually tackle some organic terrain. These Prussonians are all very regimented, lines need to be crisp, etc. and you’re using blues, reds, metallics. I think painting some trees, or building and painting a foam hill, where you’d be doing lots of dry brushing with browns and greens and not in any prescribed areas, would be a great break from the slog of the minis.
Happy to chat at any stage if you’d like : )
Really looking good John.
I think I’d go off and paint or build something completely different for a different system. I try to always vary what is on the painting table anyway and the only time I tried to tackle a huge project it feel apart as I ran out of enthusiam for it and to be honest I’ve still yet to get back to it several years later.
I like to grab the electric nail file and start cleaning mold lines off of my next project and then gluing them together.
Army builds are a slog, studio builds even more so ( imho ) because you’re filming to show us what you’re doing and how it’s all progressing. To get away and avoid burn out, go do something small for yourself ( maybe something WW2 ? Mini’s / terrain / objective markers ) ?
This will be a fantastic force once it’s done, but I completely understand how burn out can kick in! I think the thoughts above are all good – if it were me I’d pick a single character I could take to completion – as @davetaylor said, something nice and “messy” to paint like an Orc/Skaven hero or a creature of some sort. If it can be something completely unnecessary (not part of an army, dead line etc) all the better. Alternatively, take a small sub-set of the figures all the way to completion, including basing. A 5 man squad, cavalry… Read more »
Yep, that second suggestion (taking 5 to completion) is a great one. I think that’d probably be the way i’d go too.
do something to give your eyes/brain a rest simple things like scenery to go on the table may be worth a try.
you’ve brought it up so definitely take a step back, it will lead to you being too tight mentally and that will reflect in your work. no rush, take your time.
The army is looking great. I personally like to power through and keep going. However if you were to take a break and work on something else, might I suggest adding a unit of or another a HQ choice to the Astral Knights.
Ultimately it’s up to you, you will find da wae.
Also please post more pics of your Stone Templar. They are cool, and we want to see more of them.
I wouldn’t take a break but that is because I know myself, all of those guys remain at that standard if I don’t stay on it. Unfortunately, Australia is experiencing tremendous heat that means less painting for me. I know my limits, you may be different but I would say your pretty darn close to finished, my Kadrick Tzeentchian guys have remained the dame since I did up their beautiful skin tones because I got distracted. But if you need to only do a single model most probably a character so I am doing a different style of painting. I… Read more »
Personally for when you make so many models I find it best to Finish ten models. Then work on something else. A single model or a small bit of terrain. Then go to another unit.
I think we can all recognize the feeling of being burned out
could i also suggest doing some more prep for the army. like doing a test of the basing ( i try and paint models off the base so i can do all the basing at this point ) even going so far as sculpting and creating more dynamic and scenic bases for the leaders/cavalry and custom objective markers/order markers to match the bases army.
or
could you start researching and creating the transfer sheet(s) for the army?
both these options changes the work your doing but keeps you focused and thinking of the army so you don’t lose interest etc.
I love this blog – it was what inspired m to sign up to backstage. As I love 40k and Napoleonics the painting tips will be so useful when I begin my box of perry I ordered the other day… I do notice that your list lacks a commissar. Which great opportunity to convert this I think: https://store.warlordgames.com/products/napoleon-s-berlin-carriage It would look great converted into a 40k style – no would lead your cavalry into battle with a regal pump that really befits all the work you’ve already done. Perhaps planning this conversion and building it would allow you to re-focus… Read more »
Thinking about the fluff of a commissar it probably would be better if the carriage carried a high ranking officer. But I can only dream a subsonic think you want to make this project any bigger
