I think that with the fluff and background you have for this force you can give a reason.
I imagine a recruitment drive may have seen a large proportion of boy soldiers, the Imperium is not shy about such things. Deemed not ready for the front lines yet they have been organised and placed into various support units one of which is fire support.
This would account for the similar but different uniforms and the obvious scale difference.
Yup, new recruits or funneling the smaller peeps to the artillery instead of the front lines. Perhaps you can accentuate that by having the “pointer” standing on a box to appear taller.
Or replace the “pointer” with one of the front line sized minis as kind of a Sargent directing the recruits on how to operate the cannon, and mod the pointer to be holding the Sargent’s tea cup. There is tea in the grim future, right?
I like the idea of just embracing it in some manner. I’ll think on that one for sure.
Awesome Idea!!
I thought something similar…they look like teenagers next to the others, but that does fit the idea that the army is using whatever it can to fill the ranks.
Thanks, John, now I don’t have anything to complain about. 🙂
The average height of Prussian infantryman (in 1811) was 163 cm. The minimum height for the recruits was 157 cm but for the guard was 175 cm so that’s 11% taller on average. 28mm to 32mm is about a 14% increase? If you’re 6ft tall, that’s a height of 182cm which is 16% taller than the smallest soldier, about 11% bigger than average so you’re in the right area. If you’re keeping them to one side in a dedicated Heavy Weapons unit then you should just about get away with it. I use Napoleonic cavalry for Rough Riders, using the… Read more »
Or it could be a case of pre serum Steve Rogerers manning the guns, post serum Steve Rogerers in the front ranks.
Everyone was supposed to get the serum, but the same reason they are making do with partly local equipment cut off the serum supply.
I would not have a problem with this. Of course, once you have seen it, you cannot unsee it…
so it would depend on what you can get Warren to pony up the cash for, wouldn’t it?
Too small imo, they look okay at best.
They look like kids next to the fighting men, you could always go that route I guess.
My biggest concern would be, once painted will it make the difference appear even greater?
@Johnlyons . Have you considered using the 54mm Victrix Napoleonics as Ogyren(so?)
I personally would not worry. In the heat of battle I don’t think anyone would notice.
The “young blood” idea from the coments is great, and can be a nice background story.
Before reading it I was thinking “Make the hats taller!” with green stuff xD
Are there any left over minis from the inf etc that could be mixed in? To me while i like the fluff created by those before me, what my issue is, is that it is a whole base of “smaller” minis, and this is what draws the eye. I wouldnt waste the models, but if they could be worked on until an extra couple of teams from FR or whom ever could be purchased then It would be a waste and it would blend easier? Is there anyone you know who has a couple of teams in he bottom of… Read more »
Yes it’s noticeable, but I think it’ll be less so once things are all based and painted. Of course the worry you have is that even then it may still look to small. The other issue is that once it’s been noticed, you can’t “un-see” it.
On another note, I was spending the entire time watching the video thinking “make it into a horse artillery team” – glad you took note at the end there 😀
No think the Halfling crew needs to be changed to a frontrank set of figures.
For my self it would annoy me that they are of two different sizes. As such I would go with alternative models or your horse idea. Allthough I would see how it look without the guy pointing. For my eye is being drawn to parallel line of his stick and the gun. From the back it look fine but from the front and sides, the gun look to big compared to him. If I were to do this I think the horses would be fitting. There are many different way you could take it. A traditional look, ware the horse… Read more »
As it is a Las Cannon I’d have thought that the end of the barrel would be some sort of lens, so you wouldn’t need to drill a hole. The crew do stand out a bit but you could always say that they are Ratling conscripts!
I’m with Warren on this you need to change them but that could be my OCD talking.
I am with @Warzan, the difference would eventually drive me mad LOL .. seriously it’s about believability and when you lose that you lose the realism and immersion into the story/background/game … so I would say – time to recruit new troops 🙂
I think that the difference between the two types of figures is too dramatic to explain away.
Source a new crew.
I am also with Warren, the size difference would really bug me, looking at the Front Rank website I think the Russian Artillery crew or for a more fancy looking group Bavarian Artillery would work really well.
The gun conversions in themselves work really well.
They need to be changed, but maybe keep a few representing recruits/boy soldiers. The majority should be heroic sized.
Christmas holiday over and back to work on the Prussonians! I would have drilled the lascannon barrel wider than you have 🙂 Personally, I think the crew look a little lithe and light weight when compared to the rest of the army. I like the fluff explanation people have given above but it would still look odd on the table. I see two options other than sourcing new models, 1. Always field them right at the back and claim ‘perspective’. The opponent might be fooled into thinking that they are out of range! 2. Base them with a lot of… Read more »
a great video very Napoleonic with kid/youths as support units.
So I think you need to answer this question do they look that much smaller from four feet…no, then move on and don’t worry about it, if yes then, look at front rank other armies I.e. The French and look at their artillery crewmen to switch out the smaller ones. I have sort of the same problem I’m using Victrix plastic Austrians for my napoleonics and my artillery crew as well as my cav are the front rank metals since this is the only real choice.
Personally I would change for a similar scale. If it’s noticeable now and you don’t change it, it’ll always irk you in future. Take the pain now and source an alternative.
If you can get Front Rank Cannon crew go that route. If not I’d use the fist posts storyline about recruiting kids. I like the idea of the SGT being a Front Rank guy though!
Love the drilled out barrel!!! 🙂
I see it as an issue between waste/expense and aesthetics. – You could go through the expense of buying new figures. But then you’d have these “too small” figures just kicking around the studio with no other use. And that waste of money and materials would bother me. -Since this is a regiment where everyone is pressed into service, it stands to reason that smaller “weedy” guys would inevitably be present, whether they are child soldiers or just short men. Those people would most likely be relegated to more supporting roles. Personally, I’m impatient about waiting for more materials to… Read more »
Ha. That’s funny. Just had the same thing happen to me. I got the WW2 British infantry from Warlord games to use them as conscripts in my 40k army. They are smaller and thinner as well. I think I am not going to use them.
