Necromunda: Underhive Now Available For Pre-Order From Games Workshop
November 11, 2017 by brennon
The new take on Necromunda is now available for you to pre-order from Games Workshop. It all kicks off with Underhive which is the new 'game in a box' for the system, pitting House Goliath against House Escher in the confines of the Hive and its network of sewers and pipe systems.
The game box comes with everything you need to play the game on this more focused set-up. It essentially means that right out of the box, you can start playing some games of Necromunda without having to build up a collection of terrain suitable for the game. I personally think this is a good move and should prove to introduce people to the game and it's aesthetic quicker.
However, if you want to go beyond the bounds of the Underhive you can expand it out with the Gang War Supplement which throws in rules for playing on 3D terrain and additionally that campaign element to proceedings which people have come to know and love from the system.
It seems like House Goliath and House Escher are the only two Houses which are contained in this book right now but there is no doubt plans in motion to look towards the others as time goes by. I could see this expanding out in the same way they did with Blood Bowl, introducing new rules and optional extras with the book releases.
The Houses
Away from the main game, you're also able to pick up the Gangs as separate boxes but there are some optional extras too which can be bundled in including themed dice and card packs.
All of these additional bits and bobs can be picked up individually or as part of the bundle.
Plenty of terrain options are also up for grabs from their webstore allowing you to build up those 3D boards quickly from launch. It's quite cool that they've gone to the length of providing you with these options straight out of the gate rather than keeping them for a later release period.
The boxes also mean that if you want to add more variety to your gangs and play around with their weapon loadouts you can. It seems like there's enough to start personalising your gang members too which is cool.
Make sure to check out their Pre-Order Page to see more of what's on offer and let us know if you'll be diving into Necromunda: Underhive.

Seems strange you don’t make a saving if you order the boxed game and gang war together as its the same price if you order them separately
That’s GW bundles for you. All you save are clicks.
Yep, seems a bit bizarre to me too. My first port of call was GW directly (I love what they’ve done in bringing it back so considered buying direct for a change) but there just wasn’t the value in ‘bundling up’ with them so to speak. Some sort of exclusive pre-order mini, included or to buy at a discounted rate with the pre-order, or certainly something more than essentially a promo card would have been enough to swing it for me. Know it’s a crass sales tactic at the end of the day but it’s one I would have bitten… Read more »
Ah, but think of the time that you have saved by not having to find all the items and add them to your basket individually.. surely that’s reward enough… 🙂
After seeing Justin’s demo game, I decided I’ll go for it if anyone else does around here. Half an hour ago I got the “I caved and pre-ordered it” mail, so I too will cave and pre-order it.
I ordered the big box and gang war from Wayland. While I am still a bit miffed at having to buy 2 books – the 64 pages of gang war would not have hurt if it were included in the main rules i’m sure – this is perhaps the most excisted about a game I have been since I opened th elast Necromunda, in 1995 or so.
I caved
Loved the original so hopefully this will be just as good
I will eventually get this but not when it’s out. I am not in hurry to get new Necromunda.
Yep, I’m all over this one like… (insert your idiom here). Boxed game, Gang War and dice (always a sucker for a nice set) pre ordered from EG as I type this. Ridiculous really but I was sat on GW’s site just after midnight expecting it to go live then and there and fearing some sort of mad rush. Probably over-emphasizing the buzz for this one though as I’m exactly their target audience for this and it really does seem to have a great reputation and ‘aura’ among the online gaming community. I’ll be really interested to see how that… Read more »

Like Kevin Spacey on a boy actor?
…. oh dear …. 😉
Like shrimp on a barbie? How did you miss that @beardragon14?
Too soon @cpauls1, too soon
If I’d waited longer it would have lost relevance @dags 🙂
Done! Pre-ordered the box and the book. Can’t wait to get it now
I really want to be excited about this. I loved necromunda back in the day. loved it. Looks like it will play the same, but I am really worried about how GW may treat it now.
Back in the day you got the box set with awesome 3d terrain, two full gangs, and all the information for all the other gangs. Looking like they are going to make you buy a special book for 3d terrain fighting, and probably an codex of some kind per gang.
I’m going to hold off and see how this turns out.
Each book is rumoured to contain rules for two new gangs as well as new missions and equipment. I think they’re treating it as a full hobby in the way that 40k is a hobby
I’m going to devote the rest of my life to Space Hulk and Necromuda 🙂
I mean it. No more news or newspapers, books or job-searches!
Had a blast with necromunda back in the day, even more so than with 40k or fantasy. Will be interesting to see if one can get the same feel for the game now.
the goliath gang look great.
I was ambivalent …… then I saw Justin’s game…….. then I watch Warhammer TV ‘s show on Thursday night (well Friday morning for me but …time zones) and damn it I am hooked … bad …. It looks really very nice …. and at $150 for the starter box …. reasonably priced too
I was eating a taco the other day when a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared and said unto me, “Being a gamer doesn’t mean you have to buy obscenely expensive, boutique-priced little pieces of plastic. They are two entirely separate things and to believe you have to do the latter to enjoy the former just makes you a sucker.” And lo, I could see how dumb this cycle of over-spending on GW products is. And it was good.
The Devil on my shoulder said unto me “do it, buy dat plastic crack”. And I did and lo it was good. Especially that GW sweet, 100% pure plastic crack. I didn’t have to buy it but I wanted to and owning those boutique miniatures makes me happy.
Of course you didn’t have to buy it and it makes you happy, that’s how crack works.
And of course abstinence makes you happy right?
I enjoy GW miniatures and other many other boutique miniatures besides. I love building and painting them and doing so brings me many hours of happiness and enjoyment before I even set them down on the table to play. So I guess my question to you is, who the fuck are you to tell me or anyone like me that what we enjoy makes us suckers?
lol.

I think it’s appropriate or I wouldn’t have used it. Your mileage may vary
I saw her burned in my toast this morning and asked her if I should start buying GW crap again… and all I got was a stone-ground stare. I took that as a ‘No’, sold the toast for $395.28, and spent the dividend on Scibor, AoW, and Perry models.
Think I’ll maybe just dust off my old Necromunda rulebook…
Gang Wars – “Note: a copy of the Necromunda: Underhive boxed game is required to use this supplement.”
So, £92.50 to play my old Van Saars or Arbites.
Er, Naw!
Sticking with the original as well, probably be playing it with my grandkids in 20 years. Might have half my metal horde of underhivers painted by then 🙂
I am for now sticking with the old rules, everything I have seen hasn’t shown me anything the new rules offer me that I want to add to my gaming collection. Still keen to see what comes out for this, they could do some great things now its forgeworld … some vehicles and large criiters could now happen.
I’m not sure whether or not you will need to pay for the book to play your legacy gangs. Theres a section on the Necromunda website in useful downloads for Legacy Gangs. It still says coming soon but there might be rules for the old metal models on their way.
A local webshop has the boxed game at a 15% discount (85 Euro vs 100 at the GW site).
They’ve been pretty reliable when I got the Dark Imperium set from them, sooo ….
… I either avoid seeing those Necromunda videos or watch them and get hooked. Tough choice.
I noticed that both gangs have a lot of variety and presculpted bases, which is kind of essential for a small skirmish game..A few more body types and it’d be perfect.
I wonder if the parts of both gangs are compatible …
I pre ordered both from element games for a total of £74. So it’s not hard to get the game for less than GW who essentially sell at RRP
Well looking at the parts list (if you are a demanding WYSWYG gamer)
For Escher
2H Weapons
6 lasguns,
2 shotguns
2 autoguns
2 chem-throwers
1H/Dual
6 stiletto blades
4 power swords
8 laspistols,
2 autopistols
2 shock whips
2 needler/bolters
2 plasma pistols
So you get 10 bodies, now you might want to buy another pack to have most of your bases covered OR it might be possible to magnetise the arms (HEY some CRAZIES did it on Kingdom Death minis). OFC some third party stuff might also come along………
Not sure if I’m reading this right, but even if you get both the boxed game AND the addon book you only get the rules for two gangs?
Also the Gang Cards thing is news to me, does this mean we also have to buy the card for each gang to play them?
Its gone from “gimme gimme gimme” to “its all looking a bit strung out and starting to get expense” fence for me 🙁
It’s no different to Codexes
Was wondering about the cards as well .. are they more for use in the core game or useable also in gang war?
I’m going to guess that the gang cards are a sort if get you started but you will be able to create your own gangers with Gang War. There’s blank rosters on the Necromunda site so I think the cards will be usable with Gang Warfare but not entirely necessary
Not bothered if they eek out the gang rules in later expansions IF they also increase the base game (scenarios, extra rules/campaigns). The original base rules had rules for 6 gangs, mercs and named characters. But its the cards that caught me by surprise (adding an extra 25-30% to the cost of a gang). A codex however has rules and fluff for an entire army, not sure how they going to write a codex for the equivalent of one 40K unit? Of course nothing stopping you from buying the new minis and using the old rules (although there were some… Read more »
Does anyone know the release schedule for Necromunda? I would have thought that getting out the main houses as quickly as possible (Orlock, Cawdor, Van Saar, Delaque, etc..) would be in the game’s best interests, but I thought I saw the other day saying that they were aiming to get a new gang out every quartre. That can’t be the case surely? That it’s not going to be until next year that we have the main houses represented? The issue or rules isn’t a big thing for me; if the new ones are good, then brilliant, but if not, then… Read more »
I haven’t heard any rumours other than early 2018
I think gangs are being released in pairs though because I have heard each new book will cover two gangs
Must say I liked it better when you had 6 or so gangs released at once, everyone just picked a team from day one and everyone got involved straight away. It is a bit of a strange release but maybe they have a much smaller workforce on necromunda? Not quite sure how the rules for legacy gangs will work either
It’s a bit of a distant memory now but I don’t remember all 6 gangs being released at once way back in 1995.
Orlock and Goliath in the box, fairly certain Cawdor and Van saar or delaque came out about the same time. Cant remember having to wait much for all four of us to have a team ready. The 6 houses had rules in the rulebook if im not completely senile.
They were released fairly quickly but they weren’t all available on release day although I think the metal Orlock and Goliath gangs were. However I also don’t remember there being much distinction between the gangs aside from slightly different equipment access and different advancement tables (again it’s a long time since I looked at the original rulebook). I’m starting to think that the new edition will provide different profiles for gangers in different gangs (the House Escher tactics article seemed to suggest that would be the case).
Sounds right about gang destinction, goliaths also had a shorter natural life span if not mistaken. Scavvies, ratskins ad spyrers were the first with completely exotic equipment
I think that gang distinction is probably why they are making different books. Obviously they COULD just do one book with all gangs however unless you actually want to play all the gangs I guess you will only need to purchase a single book – the one for your gang. For me I am happy to buy the extra books and content because I think it’s likely that this will essentially replace 40k in my life. I want to get into 40k but having a wee baby means I don’t really have the time to focus on a full army.… Read more »
Yeah life happens 🙂 it replaced 40k for a long time before, i hope it can again .. 40k atm takes too much planning and time away to get any meaningful gaming in these days.
The main house gangs all came out relatively quickly compared to each other; I don’t remember it being a long wait. And yeah, the gangs all started out with the same stats; the differences all came from the skills each gang had access to; for instance, Cawdor gang members didn’t have access to Stealth unless they rolled double 6 (or whatever the roll was that allowed you to pick anything), while Delaque everyone had access to that skill tree. I believe the Necromunda had a sort of living rule book (like Blood Bowl did), which made the gangs more distinct.… Read more »
