More GW News From NOVA; Shadespire, New Codexes & More
August 31, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop had more than just Necromunda to show off at NOVA this week as they also had a bit of news for other games too. The other big announcement came with another warband for Shadespire and the Ironjawz.
The new warband and models look awesome, as has most of the new Shadespire collection. I think this could very well become the way I want to play Age of Sigmar themed games. I like the cut down number of models you need, the idea of deck building, and the pickup nature of it.
You can see the full reveal trailer for them below...
It's going to be tough deciding if I like the Stormcast more or these Ironjawz. I suppose, much like with Blood Bowl you could end up just choosing a variety and playing with whatever takes your fancy since painting them isn't going to be too much of a chore!
Malign Portents
That wasn't all that Games Workshop had to share for Age of Sigmar either as they also teased the ominous Malign Portents.
It looks like this is going to be a big global event/campaign similar to what we saw with the Warhammer 40,000 campaign this year. The event does mean we get some new models too like the Knight Of Shrouds here for your Death armies.
More undead is always good, especially as an update for some of the range. A lot of it has translated over very nicely but I think people would prefer to see more models like this which add a bit more 'AoS' to their undead armies rather than still feeling like a revamped Warhammer army.
Warhammer 40,000
New Codexes were also announced at the event with the next three after Death Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus making an appearance.
Eldar, Tyranids and Astra Militarum sounds like a good shout as it now introduces more of the Xenos races into the mix which is good. It will be fun seeing how much of a change has come to the Eldar in particular and let's hope we see more plastic boxes for their Aspect Warriors!
Chapter Approved is also returning with a new mandate to bolster your hobby in Warhammer 40,000.
Inside the book, you'll find...
- An expansion for Apocalypse games of Warhammer 40,000
- Guidelines on running a planetary invasion campaign
- Updated matched play points for dozens of units and weapons across every army
- Loads of new Missions for open, narrative and matched play.
...but also interestingly some more rules for armies that haven't yet got their Codexes meaning that they'll feel more fleshed out ahead of time which is good.
Hobby Heroes
Maybe Games Workshop liked our Golden Button awards so much that they decided to copy us here right? Well, the community can now vote for their Warhammer Hero and have them get a medal for their diligence in painting and crafting armies.
This award could go to you for not just painting but also organising tournaments, running local game nights or simply just being an inspirational person who feeds into your hobby and helps you delve deeper into Warhammer 40,000 and Age Of Sigmar. More details on it are coming in the future.
What do you think of the news from NOVA?

Interesting. So Eldar and Nids do get they codices already during this year. And yes I am going to keep calling them by they old names instead of what they possible renamed.
Me too. I’m happy that my 2 favourite xenos races are getting their books, plus i’ll get some ideas for all the IG bits i have scattered around the hobby cave.
@mecha82 , 100 points for correctly stating ‘codices’ instead of ‘codexes.’ 🙂
I like the Knight of Shrouds, but I’m guessing he’ll be $25.00.
Its actually Codexes in High Gothic (the language used in the 40K universe). Daft but true.
*$35
I guess I’ll abandon Latin for high Gothic 🙂 . 35 &*^%$ dollars!
No mate stay with the Latin … lazy new languages s#!t me to tears
Both “codexes” and “codices” are acceptable, but it’s good practice to remain consistent when writing and use one of the other exlusively
Oxford Dictionary only recognizes ‘codices’ so I’ll stick with that.
Meriam Webster and Cambridge both recognise both forms though. But if you’re sticking with “codices” that’s cool.
I love the Knight of Shrouds, who I believe I read elsewhere, is the Herald of Nagash (which I am envisioning as a ort of Mouth of Sauron figure) . I don’t know what the Malign Portents, portent for the Mortal Realms but I am curious to find out . …. oh and yay Eldar …. no that’s right I am being facetious …… I can’t wait for my friend Barry to tell me how good they are …. Every bloody elf books he bangs on and on ….. needless to say the current dearth of Aelfs from the Age… Read more »
I’d like to see plastic Aspect warriors for the Eldar but I suspect they may be in for some changes…
That’s good to see IP get its book soon.
Glad to see some Xenos Codicies coming out, suprised at Eldar as I assumed a major rework for aspect warriors maybe that will come with the new deathcult thingy codex.
Chapter approved sounds interesting, do like the attention for those waiting on the new books.
Hobby Heroes is what I am interested in because it is an intangible that could push people into being a better hobbyist but it will be hard to know until we see how they utilise it.
Everything else seems fairly standard, we have a new toy it is super shiny and other new shinies. I like shinies BUT hobby hero could be something…
I am thrilled to see Xenos Codices before the end of the year, with both Craftworld Eldar and Tyranids being numbered amongst my favourite armies (the Bugs in particular have a special, slimy and chitinous place in my heart). I also play Death in Age of Sigmar, so I am beyond thrilled that the Death Grand Alliance factions are finally getting a bit more attention. The event is called Malign Portents, so it seems that at the very least we will get more Malignants related releases, and possibly a bit more besides. And then there is the Knight of Shrouds… Read more »
