New Tanks, Codexes & Sneak Peeks For Warhammer 40,000
July 27, 2020 by brennon
Games Workshop celebrated the launch of Warhammer 40,000: Indomitus and the New Edition of their iconic tabletop game with a preview of what's coming soon for fans of the grimdark future and its wargaming miniatures. We start with a peek at the new Codexes for the Necrons and Space Marines.

These new Codexes look like they are rather thick offerings which purport to be packed with up-to-date lore as well as all of the statistics and extra stuff you need to play games with your new armies. This is all meant to be designed to be easily referenced during gameplay so hopefully, there won't be a lot of book flicking involved!
White Scars, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Ultramarines, Salamanders, Raven Guard and Black Templars (with Psychic Awakening) players can still use their existing expansions alongside this book which is good to know whilst fans of Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Blood Angels and the Deathwatch are going to get their own Codexes in the near future. You'll, of course, find info for these Chapters in this book but they will be expanded on in the future with tailormade entries.
Codex Necrons will then expand upon this ancient threat to the galaxy with all of their new options. Maybe you'll find some interesting ways to work your own Dynasty into the lore of Warhammer 40,000 and tell their story on the tabletop?
New Warhammer 40K Gladiator - Are You Not Entertained?
In terms of new miniature previews, the first of them from the weekend was for the Primaris replacement for the Predator. The Gladiator and its various interpretations are based on the Impulsor chassis but with different armaments depending on the kind of foe you're going up against.
Gladiator Lancer // Warhammer 40K
Gladiator Reaper // Warhammer 40K
Gladiator Valiant // Warhammer 40K
Three variants of this tank are available (seen above) and they allow you to either make a seriously deadly infantry killer or a tank hunter if you so desire. I am still not a fan of the anti-gravity technology that the Space Marines are now using but I like the general look of the Gladiator. I still think that nothing beats the classic look of the Predator though and it will be hard to replace them in many armies I reckon.
Still, it makes sense that we're getting more Primaris-focused releases to help flesh out the armies of those who don't want to play with the older generation of Space Marines.
New Warhammer 40K Necron Monolith
As well as the Space Marines getting an updated take on a classic vehicle, the Necrons have also got a new Monolith to deploy onto the battlefield.
Necron Monolith // Warhammer 40K
This floating fortress has been made bigger, badder and a deadlier. It looks the part too with its weathered exterior and glowing interior both on show. You've also got those crackling gates filled with energy and Necrons stepping forth to do battle where they are most needed. I absolutely love that for the cinematic look and I think it would be great to see these used in dioramas as well as battles.
It has never been more fun to teleport your Necrons around the battlefield and bring doom to your fleshy enemies.
Upcoming Warhammer 40K Miniature Preview
The Space Marines and Necrons are getting some updates very soon but the folks at Games Workshop also took a peek into the not too distant future as well. See if you can tell what miniatures they showed off here...
New Warhammer 40K Miniatures Coming Soon
We spied something Nurgle, a bit of Dark Eldar (Drukhari), Adeptus Mechanics, Adepta Sororitas and also an Ork! I really hope that we're going to be seeing a properly updated kit for the Orks to use in Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition as they are sorely in need of a badass upgrade.
One of the new miniatures was then revealed in full, the Battle Sister Palatine.
Adepta Sororitas Palatine // Warhammer 40K
This lady is a battlefield commander who works under the tutelage of a Canoness and helps coordinate your forces movements. She seems like a good option for those who want to get more characters into their army at a lower points cost.
So, what do you make of the new previews by Games Workshop for Warhammer 40,000? Are you impressed?

I’m finding the change in artistic direction, as shown by those two codex covers, a bit jarring.
Certainly the influence of John Blanche has well and truly gone.
I am wondering if the new art direction, including the artwork on the Warhammer Community website, is aimed at brining the “Warhammer Adventures” followers into the “main hobby” (for want of a better phrase).
I think it’s an effort to make it more colourful and eye-catching. There is certainly still grimdark there, but less through the eyes of a rather unique and individual vision with Blanche. I often liked SOME of his art but the vast majority of it I could easily be rid of.
I much prefer the vision of Warhammer & 40K born out of Adrian Smith’s art which was less stylised but still had that hard edge to it.
Will a future animated series be using the same art style…?
“Angels of Death” doesn’t seem to be, but I thought there were more than that one in the works, but I can’t find anything on those via a search on the Community website.
Well – they have that more anime-inspired cartoon coming out through Hammer & Bolter and then something CG which is more in line with the New 40K cinematic. So – probably. The comic book series is certainly taking a brighter approach to 40K too.
Really like the new Monolith. Not sure about the ball, perhaps I’d prefer it to be round but I doubt I’ll ever paint up a Necron army anyway. Don’t like the new direction for Space Marine tanks anyway, so thumbs down for the Gladiator. Will be interesting to see what the new models are.
I quite like the new cover designs – it actually looks new rather than just recycled with a dark border round it as so many of them were in 8th.
I just hope they don’t use recycled crap art whenever they do a faction they don’t like …
And I really wished they made the codexes (and the factions) more thematic.
The 8th edition Ork codex was boring compared to how Orks used to be.
That really showed favortism from GW’s part. So many factions didn’t get new cover art for they codces while Space Marines got not 1 but 2 new cover art. Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Deathwatch and Space Wolves codeces didn’t get new cover art like generic Marine codex and got old art with new borders.
And yesh, some codeces lacked flavor and were rather boring. Hopefully they also fix that with 9th edition.
The Marines one has the 40k version of Thrudd on the cover lol
Hovertanks *sigh*
*shakes head*
Agree with you there, only hover tanks for me are Brigade models Hammer Slammers and Sci-fi ranges. Still I don’t play 40K so all you grimdark fans of the 41st Millennium please ignore me and enjoy. Like the monolith screams sci-fi undead as loud as can be.
Eldar have hovertanks.
Everyone else weighs too much for hover tech to work 😉
That’s very true I admit that hadn’t thought about the elder. Don’t the Tau and Necrons have antigravity too? Then there’s the landspeeder. As mentioned I’m not a player of 40K so excuse me. Love my hammers slammers so hover tanks inst too much of stretch for me. I’m likely basing my opinion around that old school Imperial tanks and Space Marine landcruiser type rolling forward to crush things under mighty treads look I remember looking at in white Dwarf as a kid. Call me an old gronard and enjoy your hobby ?
Yes, true the Eldar always had anti-grav vehicles… but as far as I remember those where extra fragile when propulsion went kaputt. Whatever… Grimdark needs tracks or at least large stompy feet in my book.
I think the real tragedy is that Dreamforge’s hover stug didn’t get funded, it looked cooler than this and would have no doubt been cheaper.
I do like the new Monolith, though I liked the crystal on the old one more than the ball. Not so sure on the Space Marine tank while it looks ok I don’t like those Antigrav Plates and that it uses ANtigrav technology at all.
The Sister looks quite nice.
Need to find a very skilled and talented 3d artist to design some new tank tracks for all of the Primaris vehicles. Something robust and blocky to fit with the rest of the design.
Sounds like a great idea for a community lead goal…. real beast of war kind of thing. Hint hint…nudge nudge.
I would love to buy those models, but not as hover tanks… I hate the look and idea of a “hover” tank.
Victoria Miniatures, Zinge, others did wheels for the Taurox; I’d expect someone to do this before too long.
The new marine predys look good is that the Crystal maze ball on the necron pyramid ?
I’m really not a big fan of the hover tank style (gimme tracks any day), but I’d be lying if I said the new Primaris tanks didn’t look good. I’m always going to love their gun-brick look, and the sheer amount of dakka on the Reaper variant will always make me smile. But once again, the Necrons come along to steal the show! That monolith is beautiful, and is such a welcome update to the overly clean old model. (Also…did I see a brand-new ork model wearing a Squig pelt? EEEEE!!!)
I really wish the tanks didn’t have such stubby guns. I would have liked to have seen gun proportions similar to a modern-day Abrams or Challenger tanks.
But I guess it would not be practical to play such models on a gameboard with lots of tightly packed terrain.
Primars Tanks are meh, new Monolith looks rather good and it’s nice to see new model for SoB.
I get what people are saying about the 2 codex covers… i’m not a fan either but, at least, it’s new art… Also not a fan of flying tanks so, i think for the forces provided by “Indomitus, i’ll be sticking to bikes and Assault Primaris whose name elude me… As for the Necrons, i’ll be keeping them too from my Indomitus box, i really like them! The new Monolith is awesome, albeit i’m still not sure about the “disco ball” uptop… i might change it up to something else but, it’s a long way for me, i still need… Read more »
Predator tanks which fly
It’s odd. There is nothing special about the Marine tanks and it’s quite a basic style but they kind of appeal to me……..
I like these. Hopefully I can get my marine half of the Indomitus stuff paintd before they come out.
It’s just sad and embarrassing watching Gdubs make the same mistakes over and over. They really don’t get it, or should I say some of the people who make the final decisions just don’t get it and keep allowing these bad choices to continue. They haven’t worked out yet that people love true-scale marines, they don’t love Primaris marines. They love their marines actually being in scale and having human proportions – they don’t love Primaris. Indomitus is loved because it has true-scale marines such as a true-scale Chaplain – not because it has Primaris in. And they don’t learn.… Read more »
I remember reading though it was some years ago that GW’s target audience was 14/15 year old who they expected to stay involved for 3 to 5 years before giving up. So I woukd say these new releases and yet another edition of the rules are aimed at the latest generation of players coming into 40k who don’t have any of the previous releases.
GW ‘s profits go up year on year so their business model seems to be working for them
There is historical precedence: the infamous deodorant stick tank from that old (25 or is it 30 years ago…) White Dwarf was a Space Marine Hovertank as well.
I built plenty of those tanks back in the day!
I guess that is why I except these new tanks while other keep whining! ??
