Games Workshop dropped some big reveals from LVO this week for Warhammer 40,000. The Kroot are going to be coming back in a big way with a new Army Set and more supplementing the new T'au Codex over the next few months.

Some new Kroot characters have been included in the mix to lead the way. More has been made of the different styles of Shaper that can be unleashed, offering up more specialist hunters for these T'au auxiliaries. The Flesh Shaper is focused on ritualistic butchery making sure that the best genetic material gets consumed by your fellow Kroot.

Possibly the coolest of the new miniatures is the War Shaper. This fellow is your head honcho and will be making quite a statement on the tabletop with a variety of Kroot-themed weapons. I really love the proper bow and arrows that they can bring to the fighting.

There seem to be a fair few options in the set as you can see and I would warrant a few more given what Games Workshop do with their plastic sets nowadays. For those eager to make Kroot-only armies, that dream should soon be a reality. We saw more in-depth Kroot rules back in a White Dwarf magazine years ago so it feels distinctly overdue!

The core of your Kroot army is going to be made up of the new Kroot Carnivore Squad. This is a small tweak to the proportions for the Kroot and they've not done anything drastic with the look which I think is a good thing. With the number of these miniatures you'll end up running, you don't want them to end up being too much of a pain to paint.

You'll notice that the Kroot are also going to be getting themselves some upgrade options too. One of them is rocking a rather big boom stick and you've got some good customisation options with melee weapons, spyglasses and more. I think this is a good update that doesn't try and rock the boat too much. They should sit quite nicely alongside the older Kroot miniatures.

The Krootox are also going to be getting quite the makeover in Warhammer 40,000. New variants of the Krootox will be available including the young and impetuous Rampagers. As the name would suggest, they like rampaging and charging into combat so they can smash their enemies with those huge fists.

It's nice to see that we're not just getting a little update for the Kroot and they are becoming an army in their own right within the T'au Codex. I would guess we're going to be getting some good army rules and strategems that are Kroot-specific. A full Kroot-themed Detachment and more will be available in the new Codex.

Not to be outdone, the classic Krootox Rider is back and looks rather grumpy indeed. You can rock some serious guns on the back of this beast meaning that you shouldn't have to rely on those blue-skinned overlords for your ranged support.

Games Workshop also stated that this isn't everything that we're going to be getting for the Kroot. A lot more is still to come. I would guess we'll see Kroot Hounds previewed soon alongside some more specialists for the Kroot. The old Kill Team joins the roster but I could also see more Kroot with T'au-themed weapons in the mix as well as a bit of a halfway house.

Kroot Hunting Pack - Warhammer 40K

All of the miniatures above will be included in the Hunting Pack. You'll get this wave of new Kroot plus the updated T'au Codex for 10th Edition Warhammer 40,000. Interestingly, Games Workshop put together an army set for the T'au that includes the new Codex but no actual T'au. I'm sure that will make some folks rather peeved.

I, for one, saw this as a great new set of miniatures and it's good that the Kroot are finally getting the attention that they deserve. I just hope that the same goes for the other auxiliary elements of the T'au including the Vespid. Rumours are we'll see them in a Kill Team set. It would also be fun to have rules for making the humans that get drafted in alongside the T'au when they conquer worlds.

What do you make of the new Kroot?
