Mortarion Returns Plus New Death Guard Codex For Warhammer 40,000
September 9, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop has now made the Daemonic Primarch available for you to pre-order for Warhammer 40,000. Welcome, Mortarion who, while marmite as a model, is certainly looking as imposing as his statistics would signify.
The model stands head and wings above most other models and even dwarfs Roboute Guilliman who still rocks in as an impressive warrior on the tabletop. You can see the size difference in more detail here below...
The real question is whether or not you're going to pick one up for your own force on the tabletop. He certainly has the ability to control the battlefield quite effectively with some of his zoning powers and the enemy will pay a heavy toll if they don't find a way to destroy him.
Death Guard Codex & More
Of course, there is also the new Codex for the Death Guard giving them more themes to draw on for their force. You can also pick up accessories like the Dice and the Data Cards too which no doubt will sell like hot cakes.
You can also expect to pick up the Limited Edition version of the Codex too if that is what appeals to you. While they are proper works of art and a lot of effort has gone into them I still don't think I'd be able to stretch to them regardless of how much I liked an army.
In addition, talking about special releases, there is also The Plague Brethren set which comes with three special miniatures.
This set comes with these three models, artwork and concept designs about how they came to life and much more about the design process. You of course also get the rules to play games with them too.
Once again, while this isn't going to be for everyone, this is a nice extra thing to throw into the mix for really big fans of the game world of Warhammer 40,000 that want to find out more about the process behind the models. The characters do actually look pretty ace too.
What do you think about the new Nurgle selection?

Don’t get me wrong, the figure is impressive and amazing, but too much in every way, even the bad ones. I like mi miniatures at miniature size, thank you 😀
I think Mortarion is a great looking miniature and even though I’m not a huge Death Guard fan they do hold a little rotting piece of my heart from way back in the days of edition 3.
I do think maybe GW have missed the mark slightly with the £85 price tag. You could get the Forge World version for £25 less (which I personally prefer) and then have the cash to make your own, unique conversion. Still… another great mini 🙂
The Forge World version is a lot smaller though
One of the nicest miniatures GW have ever made IMO. The price tag is a little eye-watering though. From a discount retailer he’s about £65 but still super expensive. Xmas prezzie sorted though.
As @onlyonepinman says, he is a lot bigger than the 30k FW version, being a huge daemon prince and all.
Any of pictures that I have seen about that Mortarion model still hasn’t made me like it. Maybe if I see it in person assembled and painted in LGS either on display or as part of some one’s death Guard army I might start to like it or even warm up to it but maybe not.
Have to agree, im not keen on the similar pose to nagash, or the bad copy of scarecrow from the batman arkham games, that said apparently you can radically alter the pose if you build it with the alternative weapon pose so sythe in left hand and gun in right, the price dont bother me though if you view it as the 8th edition version of an imperial knight, now most people i know have a knight or two now so i guess these will be the spectacle minis wonder who the next loyalist primarch will be and will it… Read more »
Book, cards and dice ordered. Not sure how well they will roll but they look cool. I want to plan out the army and actually see the model before considering mortarion. 3 dudes, maybe for some variety but price is a bit high. 21 quid for novelty value would of won it.
I think he should be renamed to Motharion…
I like the miniature, but not as a W40K Mortarion miniature. It’s too cartoony, etc etc.
I love the dice .. I love how the dots look like pustules …. I haven’t ordered anything else yet … but I must confess that Papa Nurgle (who I have previously called Stinky) is appealing much more than the other Chaos Gods ( Surly, Sneaky, Sleazy and sometimes Squeaky ) ever have.
Mortarion looks like an incredible piece of kit, GW seem .. seem… to have met the quality you can achieve with metal/resin now, with their plastics (though we’ll have to have a closer look of course…)
No thanks
Thats a lot of money for 2 sprues in Mortis case.
But the toxic price aside he will make a stunning centerpiece for a Deathguard mob.
Cant wait for the next primarch.
Fantastic model, not sure the paintjob does it justice. Its technically brilliant, but hes basically the god of decay, I doubt he polishes his armour.
You’re not supposed to think too hard about the logistics when it comes to 40k, because if you do, you have to wonder where all the Chaos legions get their artisans from when it comes to making their armour all fancy.
Are there tiers of initiation when it comes to Khorne? Are there people who are really into painting skulls, but when it comes to actual skulls they aren’t so keen? Do they have an HR department that sorts this all out?
Mothman lives again.
preferred the earlier one.
Oh and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHY ARE GW GIVING US THISSSSSSSSSS CODEX!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t they know we want LEEEEEGGGIIOOOONNSSSS ?!? Why don’t they give us LEEEEGION CODEXES???? EVERYONE WANTS IT !!!!! WHY DON’T THEY DO IT!!!!!! I am NOT going to spend another $$ on GW until we get LEEEEEIGONSSSSSS. ….. and that will deprive them of the $55 I might have spent if I wasn’t going to buy something else. THAT WILL SHOW THEM !!!!!! *** DISCLAIMER *** This post has absolutely nothing to do it’s author’s personal beliefs. It in fact has nothing to do with the posters on this website,… Read more »
lol is ok
get it off your chest lol
Thanks mate I will 😀
Haha, loved this. Have seen that same post over and over for years and now we’re getting the legion codexes, folk still ain’t happy. Except me.
As a staunch follower of Grandfather Nurgle for many years, these releases make me sick in my mouth (in a good way).
I know right? I half believe that most of the posters don’t actually play or collect they just want to have a group whinge session. … ahhh well it takes all types 🙂
@bearddragon14 Bravo well said! My pet theory on what fuels the hate is that they (collectivly) have over invested in merchandise, so cant walk away, but cant detach their bitterness towards their own sillyness and instead hate on GW as though its a being not a company. It makes me laugh though how some vocal voices on other places are the same people who defend to the hilt the majority of black libraries badly written pulpy out pourings, i mean honestly some of the drivel they release makes the point horror books/R L Stein look like modern literary masterpeices, their… Read more »
Yeah mate I agree, but if you hate something that much I think they are better off walking away. There are plenty of other ways to spend your time. Too much negativity isn’t good for your health. Have a laugh with some mates and a beer or two. Remember when you get upset your body frowns with you (This has been a Beardragon14 health announcement)
oh god … don’t get me started.
I’m not sure if this hobby has it less than the video games forums I visit, but *eep*
It’s as if some people can’t handle it if something doesn’t tickle their special snow flakeyness.
I think you nailed it with the type of person that has this type of reaction.
A lot of them have this “I don’t have any fun, so you shouldn’t either” type of reaction to anything that isn’t in line with their special needs …
As such I’m soo glad that this community lacks these folks.
The price tag is eye watering, but the model itself really works for me. Mortarian is the ultimate disciple of Nurgle, and the model gets that across, with nods to the association with the classical vision of death conveyed by Silence (you have to love a giant chain blade scythe – it is just wonderfully, weirdly 40K) and the robes over his armour. The connected theme of decay is also well represented by his tattered wings (and I like the choice of insect wings rather than bat wings here, with bugs being so strongly associated with decay in the popular… Read more »
I think this definitely the best of the two Demon Primarchs, it’s a fantastic model. I think gw have picked a colour scheme that looks a little too clean though; the colours themselves look right but it just doesn’t look dirty or corrupted
I’m guessing they picked a scheme that is possible based on techniques used for the rest of their models.
As such I do agree that this one (and the rest of their nurgle army) are looking a bit too bright and shiny for something that should be disgustingly ugly.
None of new Death Guard have particularly Nurgle look. No exposed flesh and bone, no broken armor and no rotten or diseased flesh. Those look so shiny and also have mutations that are not Nurgle’s thing. The Outer Circle called them Baby’s First Nurgle and I can see why he would call them that.
Have you actually looked at the miniatures? Practically all of the new plague marines have exposed flesh and bone. Every one has broken armour in some way. Mutation by way of tentacles, spikes, insect parts, growths and mouths in their bloated stomachs has always been a Nurgle thing since the old Realm of Chaos era C1990.
Agreed the paint jobs are a bit clean looking for Nurgle though…
I have decided not to pick up Mortarion until after I get my Nurgle Start Collecting done for AoS for Armies on Parade. *Then* if I can get my Death Guard I have on hand finished I’ll try and get him before the 40K Armies on Parade. Of course, having said that, I’ll probably buy him as soon as I see the first on on the table. I was never keen on Magnus until I saw people playing with him but so far have been pretty good about keeping my impulse buying under control (and I can’t belive I just… Read more »
