Mechanicus Vs Necrons In Forgebane – New Warhammer 40,000 Battle Box
March 6, 2018 by brennon
A new Warhammer 40,000 'Battle Box' is on the way from the folks at Games Workshop as they unveiled Forgebane this week. The new set sees the Necrons clashing with the Adeptus Mechanicus on the tabletop and comes with a few new models too.
The box will contain two armies which can go head-to-head on the tabletop as well as the rules to play games with them. The box contains enough models to not only play around with the basic mechanics of the game but take things to the next level with those Canoptek Wraiths and the new Knight Armiger Warglaives.
These mini-knights are piloted by Knights in training and are no less adept and cutting their way through the enemy and their vehicles on the tabletop. They also happen to look rather awesome which is always a big bonus. Of course, one of the other new models for the set is the Necron Cryptek.
This fellow can skim around the battlefield, using his abilities to heal your units and get them fixed up for battle. I really like the posing for him which is different from the standard stoic look of the Necrons, adding a dose of character to their force.
As a starter force, this does appeal. It gives you two very dynamic and different looking armies from the world of Warhammer 40,000 and ways to play right out of the box. How balanced they might be is probably the discussion to be had, but it gives you a nice base to build from when it comes to playing your games.
What do you think of the new models?

Out of nowhere this box has really grabbed my attention. Assuming a price point near Blightwar’s could be a massive discount for some great models. Who doesn’t like big stompy walkers? The fight over my wallet is getting serious this month
Look a great box and the new mini knights look fabulous.
Robot Wars!!!
Looks to be a hell of a bargain, seems pricing to be at the sub £100 mark 🙂
Wouldnt be surprised if it will retail for about £80 and be able to found at the usual places with a 15 – 20% discount…
Betting the baby knights will be £45 a pop so almost worth the box price for them alone…
Indeed. Because of…
“the set will cost you less than getting everything inside separately, and that’s BEFORE you count the new Cryptek and Imperial Knight units.”
…meaning less than 115.
Heh thats only if you pay retail 😉
Stock is sold at 50% of RRP + VAT, which is why various online places can and do get away with selling at 20% off as standard, just have to have a physical shop premises public can buy from too, to not fall afoul of GW’s trade rules…
I know. Just talking about the ‘regular’ price there since that sentence is the only reliable info I got. 😉
WOW. A really cool set. Good minis, nice new additions. and – that’s almost the best part – it is great background wise.
So, another go at the Dragon on Mars?:D
great idea, first themed box I can remember that doesn’t have a power armoured army in it, and a tremendous theme to boot. Time to do a Nagash/Ctan conversion perhaps?
Interesting idea!
I‘m in …
The timing of this makes me smile, well played. A box set that’s such a good value and includes brand new models coming out just at the time FFG is releasing SW Legion. Sure GW has a lead time to put these together, different audiences (not really) etc… but what a coincidence.
I like the necrons for a Traveler “rogue terraformer gone wild” game. I already have some models built to that end, and was actually looking for three more of the wraiths to use as light armour. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who plays GW games, so don’t know what I would do with the Mechanicus mini’s. Anyone in Winnipeg, Mb. want to split a box?
Also, that cryptek fellow would need a head swap.
Ebay is probably your best bet, If you split the box and only keep the necrons you could sell the mechanicus half. Probably get the cost of the full box back just on them. Just a thought.
I’ve only dabbled in 8th edition (starter box) and a bit of Shadow Wars (skitarii BTW)… I’ve always had a soft spot for Necrons… so this is super tempting… I’m not so sure about “balance”… lol… 2 big knights, a character, and 10 line infantry… vs 3 fast attack wraiths, 5 heavy weapon immortals, 5 elite phase shield lychguard, and mobile character… but then again, if Necron Codex is coming out pretty much along side this.. and if the cost for those 2 armiger knights is discounted as we expect, might be tough to pass on this.
All great models and a great price, for all people complain about GW prices I’ve always found their box sets have good value. The Armiger models are amazing and I say worth it for them alone and I don’t even play 40k.
I like what I see. If I collected either army I would surely get that boxed set. Then again I might still get it and use those AdMech models and those new Knights with my Blood Angels and Dark Angels.
The two armies in 40K that I’m interested in. This is so getting purchased!
Its a nice box, but as an established necron player it doesn’t have a huge reason to buy, effectively a character model that it would be disappointing if not available separately.
Different looking? Looks like Civil War to me: two sides of the same coin. Still, possible purchase….if the price doesn’t choke my wallet.
I would be very surprised if this wasn’t £95 rrp. With a 20% discount which is pretty easy to find, it’s actually decent value.
The Void Dragon’s Ex meets his current partner… violence and hopefully well priced box sets ensue!
Ooh I like the Junior Knights!
They do look nice. Not really my thing, but still good for those that are into ether army.
I kind of wish it was a game instead of just a box of stuff with 40K mini rules.
