The Lord Inquisitor Runs Its First Speech and Facial Tests
March 9, 2015 by dracs
Facial movement and speech can be the most difficult part of CGI animation, but the guys behind The Lord Inquisitor 40k fan film appear to have things well in hand as they show their first speech and facial tests.
This test footage gives us some idea of the attention to detail that goes into creating these realistic characters and ensure that their movements and speech are of a good quality. This can indeed be a problem as shoddy facial animation and dialogue that doesn't match with lip movements can be incredibly jarring to watch.
As well as giving us a bit of insight into the creative process, this small bit of footage once again lets us see how the atmospheric lighting and texture is coming along. All in all, once The Lord Inquisitor is finished I would say we are in for a fantastic looking film.
How do you think this fan project is shaping up?

looks good.
Funny how their first speech/facial test already looks better than the Space Marine movie!
I didn’t like it. Sure the graphics look great but he talks like a Muppet. His lips seem incapable of making the “O” shape. As this is only a test I hope/assume this will be improved upon.
@maddgame you realize this is work in progress? and its no budget movei NOT like Space Marine? I am 100% sure that it will be perfect – this guy is perfectionist ( Rasmus if I’m correct)
@radegast As I mentioned I’m aware that this is just a test but I’m just expressing my opinion.
I think the clips look perfect way better than the Space Marine movie but so far not impressed with the animation of the speech. Like you said it probably will be perfected in time but they released this footage so they must expect people to react to it.
The directional lighting and skin tones have been really well done. Side on the mouth movements look more correct and natural, especially combined with the subtle head movements. The initial “front on” mouth movements probably still need a little more digital scripting. As @maddgame mentioned the lips don’t look to be forming the words. This might not even be an issue, as it is only noticeable at certain angles. It will depend on where Erasmus decides to start and stop the panning/tracking angles for the shot. Though as @radegast6 said Mr Erasmus Brosdau is a perfectionist, The hours of work… Read more »
The overall look of the animation isn’t too bad. But the mouth isn’t synchronized at all and the voice-acting is mediocre at best.
Not bad considering that it isn’t a huge Hollywood blockbuster. But still needs a fair bit of work…
