Legion Praetors Previewed For Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
April 14, 2022 by brennon
Games Workshop has dropped previews for more of the upcoming plastic miniatures for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. The focus this week was on the Legion Praetors that are going to be leading the majority of your Legions into battle.
Legion Praetors Preview // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
The trailer reveals a look at the Legion Praetors for the Imperial Fists and the Sons Of Horus although the actual preview article only really goes into the Imperial Fists Praetor. We did get a look at the Sons Of Horus a while back at AdeptiCon, but it would have been nice to see the alternative options.
Imperial Fists Praetor // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
This Praetor comes armed with a master-crafted Volkite Charger alongside a power weapon (or Paragon Blade) for cutting through your foes. He is clad in Artificer Armour and has an Iron Halo which keeps him from being cut down. You'll also note that the model comes with a variety of head options. I'm not entirely sure the Corvus helmet sits well into the chest, at least in the image above.

A totally unseen miniature is coming up next week, but this also seems an apt time to show off the Sons Of Horus variant of the Legion Praetor that you could build from the new boxed set.

I would guess that, as per the cinematic trailer, the Sons Of Horus Praetor above is going to come with a fully helmeted version much like the Imperial Fists leader.
Another tempting morsel from Games Workshop that might draw you into the world of The Horus Heresy?

The Praetors don’t grab me in the way that the standard marines do. Too fussy maybe? The best upraised power armoured arm I’ve seen in plastic though!
agreed
I kind of wished they could do something a bit more dramatic with these characters.
Foot on tactical rock + sword raised feels a bit boring … nothing one could not recreate by greenstuffing a standard beaky marine.
The head crest seems to llok a bit strange/silly more so on the helmetless head. The crest should either be directly on the helmet or removed and on the head without a helmet it needs to be removed in my opinion.
Could be snipped off I reckon easily. Might be the way I go as I was thinking this fellow could work as a neat Space Wolf.
Yes it looks like it could easily be removed and yes with that face he makes a great Space Wolf. The face is generally really nice.
I love the bare head’s of the commanders shame I’ll make a pig’s ear of them if i paint the figures.
When the first Praetor was released I saw a lot of people generally liked it, but thought it wasn’t very “Horus Heresy.” I think what we didn’t realize then and there was GW’s clearly making something new out of this setting, as a product, and on the contrary he is soon going to look very “Horus Heresy,” because all these new models are going to use that aesthetic.
I would have thought these would have been released in a new heresy starter box along with the new tactical squads.
what ? and you not buying more than one box of goodies from GW ? 😉
I fully expect them to sell these character models at character pricing (20-30 Euro).
LoL Very good point I wouldn’t bet against that ?
it kind of sucks doesn’t it ? As cool as (some of) this Horus Heresy stuff is going to be … it’s also going to be expensive and probably very hard to get past its initial run. The new beakies would be fun to have in 40k as the classic tactical squad still exists (in 8th edition codex that is). Although stat wise they’ve been replaced by the P-marines and I’m sure the meta has eliminated them completely already. Same with the Praetors, because they would make for lovely alternate character models in 40k too. I mean … the marines… Read more »
Especially if your out about on a crusade in the middle of no place and haven’t had chance to make your tailors appointment or cross over or whatever it is they do to become P marines. Your likely right that one thing will be the expense. I’m sure a box set will be on the horizon GW most likely don’t want it to clash with the others they have scheduled. They do love a launch.
yep … even though I’m not planning to play 40k or Horus Heresy I still find myself wanting those classic beakies.
They’re just so damned cool.
The praetors being cool would have been a bonus.
It’s a shame they seem determined on filling all the gaps, so there’s nowhere left for your own version these days, unlike the early days.
I know what you mean, the original multi part beakies were my first GW purchase back in the day, the pull of nostalgia is strong but I’m fighting it….so far ?
lol … yeah, so tempted to buy one and paint them in the original scheme I wanted to do as a kid : red top / black bottom
like those red/black hammers in Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ animation.
That’s would be great. I remember having a pack of the ‘combat’ top trump cards I’d swapped in primary school and the paint jobs were wacky when compared to today but I was always a fan of the beaky marines in Desert Camo. I don’t even think they had a chapter and I remember a lot of red hearts making it into the paint scheme. Ahhhh nostalgia
Last of the mohicans?
