In this episode the guys have a bit of a speculation about the upcoming Horus Heresy boxed game, show off one of the coolest Inquisitor Models your likely to have seen in a while, and then basically set the ground works for where we're headed for the next few weeks, and what is the best ways to get into (or back into) Warhammer 40K.

OOOHHHH YEHHHH!!!! I’m super keeeen for this!!!
Can’t wait to give this a watch whilst I get stuck in to some painting. Still thinking it’d be a laugh to get you guys playing a HH battle 😉
The lost Johnston brother… I thought it was all myst and legend yet there he is, in flesh and blood.
Yeah, I hope AJ keeps his glasses on, or it’ll be a nightmare working out which one is which.
Lol we did warn you guys 🙂
I have been experimenting with contact lenses, but for continuity, I’ll keep the frames. 🙂
My main obsession with 40k was the minor/lesser xenos races that never get any model support. Some years ago I did an Enslavers army, which you can find if you google it. i always found a lot of those obscure aliens a lot more interesting than the ones in the actual game and was originally what inspired me to get into sculpting my own stuff.
I plan to get back to 40k soon, but I’ll be doing my own original alien race instead. I wanted to see what would happen if you got 40k’s Over the top SM esque proportions and merged it with non-humanoid aliens. The result looks a bit Dalek-y so far.
Sounds like a cool idea for a race. Would love to see some WIP pictures!
Really like the new show!
im getting back into 40k after a long break and i decided on orks for a fun hobby with lots of conversions etc :).
my Dad is even thinking of starting it and he is 75 so thats awesomesauce.
so this show is great for both of us when the working day is done :).
Orks really are a modellers dream. Its a great looking army on the table top.
Agreed @aj86 ! Orks and all the kit-bashing/converting/scratch-building is what brought me into the game in the first place.
yeah!! i have 4 squads of boyz and 1 squad of grotz on the go now. im looking at old white dwarf and adrian woods orks. They had loads of character.
i bought a barren waste land FAT MAT and this weekend i decided on making a terrain piece for a break.
Im making and orky oil derrik to fuel da buggies!!!!
WAAAARRRRRRGHH! Grimtuff is well on its way 🙂
Been waiting for this series to start for an age…. hooray Monday evening is looking up!
Great new show spacehulk really got me into 40K then I got temped by the tanks, the books are perfect to bring the universe to life they are perfect to see what army you may want to build for the game.
Love the inquisitors & vehicles,
Nice one AJ & @warzan.
Cheers lads this is a show I have been waiting for!!! I have not played 40K since waaay back in 3rd edition. Our group disbanded and unfortunately no one wanted to play any longer. I only in the last few years rekindled interest and was able to pick up a pile of Dark Angel goodness along with the 1st edition of the Dark Vengeance box set and the required Space Hulk! I can not get enough of everything 40K and 30K now! Unfortunately there is not much of a following for 40k where I live so I am recruiting friends and family to be my opponents. But even if I never play again I will still collect and paint up the models. That was where I first started long ago with a small Ultramarine squad box set from 2nd edition. I had no plan on playing until some friends saw my models and White Dwarf magazines then we all were hooked. Those were fun days. Can not wait for more episodes!
You can’t escape the Ultramarines. I’m still very fond of these guys.
Absolutely love the new show! On the subject of topics, I can suggest the following:
1. Primarch Roundup. Cover all the Primarchs, their deaths (if applicable) and if they are still active in the 41st Millennium
2. Xenos Overviews. Do a show about each main race (Orks, Tau, Eldar, etc.) and give a brief history, play style and notable (or infamous) models.
3. Cheese and Whine. New players especially need to know what makes a fun to play army, and a not fun to play against army. How to deal with a cheese player, and how not to be one yourself (if that is what you wish) Get the US members to send some Green Bay Packers Cheese Hats for the show!

Hey Guys. We had an absolute blast filming the new 40k Charted stuff. @Number 32- I’d love to try out a HH battle. Looking forward to this boxed set loads! @Zorg- Nice to hear from a fellow tread head. I think Space Hulk was a brilliant intro game, and still holds its weight to this day!
Its great to start rolling out the videos to you guys. Thank you for all the comments so far. If you have any more suggestions for what subjects you would like to see covered, then please let us know. 🙂
Yes. I am super keen for this new show. I played 40K when I was a young bloke and have been trying to get back in for a while, relearning rules and painting, while trying to afford the purchase of an army at the same time as starting a family.
Once you have nailed down the basics I would love to see a show about running a 40K campaign.
My army I am building is a based of the forces of a Rogue Trader. I ran a Rogue Trader RPG from FFG and fell in love with my player’s character’s and the narrative they created.
some of the notable units I plan to field are PDF troops that are now allied with the Rouge Trader, Murder servitors from the Traders Ship, and lots and lots of armed naval shipmen.
I’ve also started a blog of my Hobby progress http://plansofdiceandmen.blogspot.com.au/
Hey guys I think this was a great first show, but if I could give some constructive feedback it would the follow.
1. I am not sure this is the place for it. If people are getting into 40k there is a strong chance they won’t have a back stage pass.
2. More structure, for me this video was great it meandered about and I got to have a jolly old time listening to you guys harp on about 40k stuff, but I am not the person getting into the hobby. The person getting into the hobby is looking for very specific things. Like how much does it cost, what should I get and so on. You do cover those things for sure, but in a very go your own paced way. The guy looking to get in is looking for very specific things not to wait for you to get to it, there may be a strong chance this person is somewhat impatient.
Don’t get me wrong great for me, I mean if your making content exclusively for me, meander all you want I listen to you guys talk and happily paint while you do that in the background.
I think you guys did some stuff really well, like how you talked about the force organization charts, unbound, and how you can start where you want and that can become an ally. I mean the thing is with those sorts of things those are things people really need to know because people are always going to be directed toward the box set and told to get that, but that is not necessarily the best option for them.
I think a great advertisement for backstage might be releasing a more structured version of this for your regular old youtube, which is basically this video condensed and with linking panels. Such as, easy ways for you and a friend: splitting two boxes, getting a whole army on the cheap:eBay Simply Green(I think that is what you said I don’t know) or Gumtree and, Easy ways to start: Kill Team, Allied forces, and Other thing.
Anyway I really liked it, but I am not sure that this the best place for people starting out in the hobby.
Great show waiting for the next one 😀
Agreed @caladors . As much as I enjoyed the chat, I think it’s a little bit “all over the place”. I was able to follow along as it looks a bit like a conversation I could have had with guys from my gaming group. But I think it could be a little hard to follow for a new-comer.
Backstage only for the moment was my call 🙂
This is geared up to be a community show with hopefully a heavy involvement in the comments and ongoing dialogue.
As you know unfortunately these days you need only whisper the word 40k and it attracts a ton of negativity (rightly or wrongly)
Backstage has a lot less of this and no anonymous trolling (either anti or pro)
So although it unfortunately is seen by less folk, I’m banking on a higher quality of reasoned engagement over the lifetime of the program.
Myself and AJ (and the rest of the crew) would like to create a fun and informative series that is engaging for those that watch it, and allows them to enjoy their hobby.
This is how we’re gonna try that, there will be some front end youtube stuff, but for the most part were keeping it in here so we can actually enjoy the program for a while. 🙂
I kinda get you but ultimately think this decision is flawed. To get new people involved in something like 40k you need to hook new, more casual gamers who will probably not be backstagers.
You’re preaching to the converted here, just look at the comments and you’ll see that the majority are 40k players already. I would guess that most backstagers will have been 40k players at some stage or still are. Most of us start out with Games Workshop before diversifying to other systems.
I know you’ll have the usual monkeys spitting their negativity in youtube comments but we can handle that.
I always get the feeling that every time sites like Beasts Of War / MiniWargaming do a piece on Warhammer, they get a tiresome “cease and desist” love letter from Games Workshops lawyers. Given how problematic they are to deal with, and how much they get people’s emotions going, I’m not surprised BoW have chosen to launch this show in Backstage where it can be better controlled at first.
@warzan
I think the ‘trolling’ comes with the territory. You want to be a space marine your not going to be sitting down to negotiations too often. You have to stick your neck out if your going to see what the weather is really like. And I think it would be a useful service, I took a look around and the current stuff out there is not to great… is one way of putting it.
Look your always going to be trolled this is the Internet, I dare someone to take a look at my comments and find something offensive, mean, or rude I get voted down all the time all over the place by some random. It is going to happen one way or the other it just is. The only difference is in back stage your preaching to the converted. Like I said great for me to have on in the back ground, but not for anyone who would actually want to get into 40k, for being who are thinking about getting BACK in to 40k maybe, but still.
I just think you have to be brave, no matter what you do someone will be against you. And if video games taught me anything if you find enemies, your going the right way.
Hello Folks, Wicked Awesome show, Love it. When I was about 4 or 5 my Mom was ill , her heart was having problems so in and out of the hospital a lot. Me sent off to the grand parents to be looked after. My Moms Da was a war vet from WW1 & WW2 and always reading books. When I stayed with him he would read books to me war books, history , sci fi books and the classics . I loved them, the stories, the heroes, all of it. Jump ahead to 1985 and I was in my local hobby store picking stuff up for D&D, when I found a small book, it was called Rogue Trader. The Dam thing had all the things I was looking for Humans, Orks, Elves, monsters, and Dwarfs in space ( I miss those little Squats ). Gave them tanks and guns and I was sold hook line and sinker. It was right out of my head, all the stories in my head came out in one awesome game. never looked back. Just a great game to play. Thanks guys again just love it brings back the memories of why I got into it.
These are the tips I would put up, I would section it off and such, but I am only putting up one, and I haven’t done the others because it takes a little bit of work… But if you guys think that is something I should continue with I will put up more.
Here are my tips for getting into 40k which is separate from getting back into 40k
Know why you want get into 40k.
Why did you want to get into 40k? This may sound like a very simple question, and it is often the simple questions that trip us up, like what makes you happy… luckily the reasons that people get into 40k are not nearly as varied as that other question. They generally
1. I want to play the game.
a) I want to play with my friends and their friends b) I want to play competitively
2. I like the models.
3. I like the story.
4. I like painting.
1. I want to play the game.
Great playing the game is a fun experience, it is a table top wargame so it involves moving models and rolling dice to simulate a battle between two opposing forces. Because of this there is both strategy and randomness, this means a lucky less experienced player can defeat a more veteran player if they do the right things off their lucky rolls, so a lot of situations can be intense and very fun so good luck to you in your new adventure. If you you’re a friendly just going to play it now and then kind of guy who is just in it for kicks goto section A. If you’re a competitive player who wants thrilling victories and to know no defeat goto section B.
A. I suggest starting with the Dark Vengeance starter, preferably splitting it with a friend! In fact if you both want the rule book, and you like different forces buy two! That way you both have the rules and you have two starting forces! Most of these units are fine to use in the game so don’t worry too much about what you are getting.
You’re not too such what you want but you don’t like what is in the starter, that is fine, but it is still the best place to get the rules, ask someone if they would like to split it so that they get the miniatures and you get the rules.
BUDGET! You’re on a budget and these things look very expensive. Well hard truth they are expensive, but there are ways around that eBay, is the prime example, but there other areas depending on your region, so you can look for that if you can delay that instant gratification need. Also there are other ways of getting into the game, look up the game kill team, that way you can just buy a box or maybe two of guys and get playing right away, this is one of my preferred ways of playing.
1.A) and…
2. I like the models.
If you like the models, I recommend still going through the same start up process, the only reason I would do anything differently is if you don’t like the models in the box, then split the box so other people get the minis, and you get the rules, or get the rules and tools off eBay or somewhere else, and just pick a box you like and start from there.
3. I like the story.
The dark vengeance box is a part of a story, start there if you want or look up other chaos or dark angel stories, if you have time to read if you don’t the audiobooks are great for car trips. Have fun in your adventure to the grim darkness of the forty first millennium…
4. I like painting.
There is a starter for the dark vengeance kit and it isn’t too bad, but you can just buy a few paints and still get the same effect. My biggest recommendation on this watch tutorials, if you’re worried you’re not a good enough painter: watch tutorials, if you’re just getting back into the hobby: watch tutorials, and finally if you’re a very experienced painter: watch tutorials. Almost every single painter in this community will tell you the same thing you can learn a lot, but watching and listening to other people.
4. I HATE PAINTING I WANT IT DIE IN A FIRE! But I don’t want my models to look horrid.
Don’t worry you’re not alone. Many people don’t like painting, my recommendation for this is the following, three really easy processes, anyone literally anyone can do it. (mainly for marines) Select your desired colour of your model, paint the whole model that colour, cover that model in the wash nul oil the whole model cover it, then wait for it to dry, once it is dry, dry brush over the original colour. Then put some textured mud on your base wait for it to dry and put some grass on your base wait for it to dry. That is it that is the whole tutorial. Everything I just said, drybrushing is super easy, and so is using texture paints, you don’t have to do anything technical. Be chill.
Alternatively if you are the kind of cat who can flash cash, there a many, many painting services out there find one that is to your liking and use them.
So Friendly players enjoy your games I wish you luck in your hobby adventure!
Great show guys!
I’ve already got a wallet leaping out of my pocket at the prospect of new Tau goodies, I think you two may have made it leap onto the desk credit card ready, lol.
I was torn between Tau and Eldar, so I ended up getting a bit of both. Then after learning that Eldar hates Necrons, I picked up a cheap box of Necron Warriors off ebay and started chopping them up.
Now I’ve got Tau and Eldar decorated with Necrons in various stages of battle and death. Some clawing out of the sands, being blasted or stood on my battle suits or scarabs eating away the wing of a piranha.
Now if I can just share this onto my better half’s facebook feed maybe she’ll pull out her Dark Angels again and get some good hobby going >:D
With minimal conversion work those cars would make nice Genestealer coven limos.
the moment I saw them I thought exactly the same thing, good old ‘Stealer cult limos.
That would be amazing.
Hurrah,
Asked for a beginners guide to 40K and No sooner said than BoW delivers!
Really looking forward to this so I can help me lad who gets flummoxed with the rules, we are going to try out the kill team this winter, to break us in gently, with your help.
There are those of us with a back stage account, who are newbies to GW systems.
Great to see this get under way – some superb ideas, but d’oh you stole some material I was working on for an article for Sam! 😉
Only the other day I was wondering when this series would kick off. Glad to see it properly started.
good to see a positive take on 40k as sometimes ( seeing all the animosity against the system) it becomes easy to forget that there is a fun game there
You are so mean..GW hasn’t managed to drag me back into 40k over the last decade and here you guys come and I went and bought a box of Skitarii.
I cannot believe it!! They didn’t get a penny from from me for ages and you guys have a bit of a chat and I am opening my wallet..incredible..
I think I buy some of the new Tau next.
Looking forward to being entertained by this show for a long time to come gents!
Well done aj & warzan
Good start gents, looking forward to seeing what else comes up
My love for 40k is waning, so maybe you can help reinvigorate it maybe, but my Heresy love is a good as ever (just started building by 4th legion army!)
very nice models and a cool talk in general.
Quality show, really enjoyed it
I’m with Caladors on this, I think it’s a good start to a new series. But considering who you are appealing to having this introduction front stage may make more sense to bring new players/backstagers in.
@aj86 That was the very first issue that I picked up as well, number 219 or so,ethnic close to that. I remember it had a chimera on the front cover. I loved the ‘Zulu’ battle report as well.
It was a brilliant White Dwarf, I still have my copy. 🙂
It was never going to happen what with Forge World already paving the way, but if 30k had been put into 15mm, GW would have dragged me back into their clutches. I suppose I should be thankful given GW pricing policy!!
Great show guys. Hello AJ 🙂 I got my DV sitting in the box, but you got me motivated.
Great show, really enjoyed it, fully engaged in both 30 and 40k happy to help in any way I can 🙂
Great show. looking forward to the next episode 😀
Nice conversational style chaps. Seems very relaxed and nicely paced.
Constructive criticism – you didn’t explain what Forge World and the Black Library actually are. Over the years I’ve pieced it together but a total neophyte might wonder what these things are.
Cheers from an unreconstructed counters and cardboard man who has weakened enough to have some fearsome X-Wing fleets but that’s it. No more minis! 😎
Loving the new show, just getting back into playing 40k recently as my nephew discovered games workshop and got some troops (and Dark Vengence as a birthday present from me). I would like to see something about tau or nids as they are my armies.
Great show!
Yes – Genestealer limo 🙂
Forgeword had sketches for an ‘Imperial Guard Staff Car’ – but they never made it 🙁
I’m searching for these images right now!
Great start to the series! Good advice too. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the Horus Heresy game. 😀
Hey Guys
I’m So glad that you liked the tip off about the Inquisitor models. I bought some of the commissar and mechanicum females and the quality of the casts were beautiful. The detail is also really crisp.
I don’t play Tau, but i am tempted to get some purely as painting projects.
I am also definitely going to purchase one of those inquisitor vehicles
Thanks a bunch for pointing out the one page rule thingy. Theres is 2 youngster 6-8 years old i wanted to play with. That rule set is perfect for that.
I think as an Intro piece this would be better as available to everyone and the more in-depth stuff like overview of the Chaos Powers being Backstage, with elements of the theme episodes a mix as you do on a game of the Friday Night.
As for what I’d like to see:
1/ Dipping into 40K oldhammer for an episode and look at the previous editions.
2/ Look at the campaigns that have been done, including a look at Planetstrike and how you might use Forbidden Stars for a campaign structure.
3/ Overview of Eldar, with 7 different factions? Generic, 4 Craftworlds, Harlequins and Dark Eldar.
PS I think the ‘Orks thousands of ’em was 220 had a picture of a Chimera on the front I think.
Was totally awesome at the time, and stands up well.
A bit on why backstage here 🙂 http://www.beastsofwar.com/backstage/40k-charted-getting-into-40k/#comment-234496
I think it would be fun to go back and pick out bits of the old editions and some of the old campaign books and see if any of the quirky missions or rules could fit with the current edition?
for example the 3rd edition rule book had some very cinematic missions like sabotage and meat grinder/bunker assault. These missions are still a lot of fun today!
My first attraction towards 40k was back in High School when I saw a display at school in a cabinet ironically by one of the teachers. It was 3 years later until I actually got to grips with what is was I was actually looking at. In college me and two mates decided this was for us, I fell in love with Blood Angels, bought the Space Marine and Blood Angel Codex (because u had to have both back then.) along with a Tactical Marine squad and a landspeeder.
One mate got himself some Catachan’s (who were their own codex at the time) and the other mate was going Chaos Marines.
Thats where it started an ended with us as the financial issues got in the way, Dawn of War then came out and gave us an affordible alternative. It was almost 10 years later that I stumbled back into the Hobby, I own a full set of Blood Angels (not all of it complete) and a sizable Tau force (very Kroot heavy, give me a Kroot Codex GW).
At this stage its been about 6months since I had a game, a bad tournament experiance and the discovery of a few new games having distracted me from the game… But the plans are there for a continued growth of my force
IS it sad to admit that I still have most of my original Rogue Trader/2nd Ed Malal chaos army, and I have the Pretorian box army (still sealed and unopened….. Beasts of War gift maybe?), a 3rd Ed 13th Coy of Space wolves (many converted), and enough Imperial guard infantry that even @warzan would be worried by the tonnage of lead in that gaming cupboard.
really enjoyed the show, it may not get me back into 30 or 40K, but I occassionally do enjoy seeing what is still happening in the Imperium and beyond. Looking forward to see how this show will evolve and the intricasies that may, or may not be well known within the fluff and “gaming gaps”
Heck, if you’re going to challenge me to “rocking chairs at dawn … reminiscing about 40K”.
Heck, I remember 1st edition. Getting ADD ONs from White Dwarf to expand the rules to include vehicles (turning arcs and b****y dreadful). I remember when Chaos was a new faction that was introduced. I didn’t like Chaos then, and I don’t like it now! [Grumpy old man]
“Get off my lawns you damn Tyranids”.
“Build and finish what you’ve got”. You guys crack me up! I can barely even see my keyboard for the tears of laughter running freely down my face.
Seriously though, this is looking like being a really fun series. Even for old ‘uns like me who’ve still not finished painting all their 2nd edition gretchins 😛
Lol
Wonderful wonderful show.
Thanks for this, and I agree , this show should remain within backstagers. I would prefer to not be withness of the usual “overpriced rage” that is going on elsewhere.
Really like AJ’s attitude, keep it up!
Good things come to those who wait. Great article and great spread of a re-introduction to the game.
As an aside my gaming mate Steve and I, refought many many real historical battles, placing them firmly in the 40k universe. Charge of the rough riders brigade, Arnhem, Kursk and Leningrad to name a few. Its fun its big it builds scenery and makes you think outside the box as well.
About bloody time. I was getting fed up watching my own unboxings to get my 30k/40k fix lol.
Good to have a dedicated 40K show. Really like how you discus the variety in the hobby, like fluff etc and not solely focus on tactics and rules. Thumbs up!
Great video guys My games club has just started to get back into 40k
Great show fellas . Welcome to the family AJ.
Well some interesting Ideas so far from the excellent comments above. Looks like I have plenty of homework to be getting on with. 🙂
I’m not into 40k anymore, have moved to Dropzone Commander for the massive battles and skirmish games for 28 mm and beyond, but this series of videos are very interesting, and are great to watch. Continue the great work, Kudos to both of you.
And maybe I will take another look to those links you posted…
Brill show sorry I have only just got round to seeing it. I started out with Epic and my first contact with 40k was with a board game that I do not see anyone talking about, Space crusade.
Heralds of Ruin KillTeam is easily one of the best games I’ve played. We had about 3 games of the other day and couldn’t stop laughing at the antics.
An example of the individuality you miss out on with a full 40k game: a squad of Orks come charging down a narrow corridor towards a firing line of 3 Tau supported by a crisis suit.
The Tau fire off a volley, knock half of them down (but not dead). Next turn, the tau drop back a few inches and repeat. The Orks keep getting back up and getting shot back down but are inexorably drawing closer! Eventually the Tau are overrun and get the clackering of their lives. But it was right down to the last model. One Fire Warrior managed to delay the Orks for two more turns! Go on son!
I can’t believe I missed this when it first aired … geat first episode. Count me in as regualr follower of this series.
