The Horus Heresy: Betrayal At Calth Game Announced By Games Workshop
October 26, 2015 by brennon
So now it's official. The Horus Heresy miniatures game from Games Workshop looks like it's going to be a reality with pre-orders for Betrayal At Calth starting on November 7th this year. Will you be saving up for this one?
This will most likely be the long rumoured plastic set that we were going to be getting this year. I'm sure we're going to be seeing leaks throughout the next few days for this game so keep an eye out on the website for more information and images.
The big question is whether or not you're going to be getting this when it comes out. This could bring a lot of people back into the fold for Games Workshop, especially if they plan to keep supporting it.
Let me know your thoughts below...

The most important line in the article being: “…especially if they plan to keep supporting it”. So I guess the game is fecked then.
Strictly speaking, it’s already supported. Forge World (FW) have a massive range, and it’s not like the old armour sets aren’t compatible for the current Space Marine range.
I can’t see this HH game not making GW a bunch of money. This close to Christmas as well, I would not be surprised to see this set being very hard to get after the first week. GW must be looking at some of the other things in the FW catalog to see what else could be turned into a cheaper plastic set (surely Contemptors).
I suppose the supporting aspect of the game comes from whether or not they make it a bit more accessible (in the loosest sense) with plastic kits and such rather than just saying – ‘now go to Forge World and buy their stuff’.
I could see them maybe doing a series of ‘boxes’ like this Calth one that allow you to play out the different conflicts in a small snap shot of the war.

Pretty sure the only thing in common with FW’s HH game will be the mini’s wouldn’t make sense for them to loose out on £500 or so of book sales…
Interested to see how it plays, and if its the rumored hex tile based ship boarding game or some thing totally different, if it is ship boarding, would be a lot of fun to play a campaign of BFG leading into 30K.
Also i propose so as not to confuse everyone that HH refers to the FW rules, and 30k refers to this.
i’d probably suggest ‘BoC’ for this until we know if it will be expanding beyond that.
HH has been known as 30k since it arrived….
This plastic nonsense can be called something entirely different! :p
Paying Forge World prices for everything is not going to bring lots of people back to GW. A compelling new rules set might.
I’m interested to see if it’s a stand-alone boxed set with minis that’ll be usable with FW Heresy stuff or will it be a proper starter box that allows you to scale up properly.
can’t see them doing a range that will compete with their already successful FW range.
That’s true. But maybe a range of basic plastic squads that still require FW parts to make them chapter specific or to add in special/heavy weapons teams or assault units? Probably wishful thinking on my part but I’ll hold on to the hope.
Heard from a reliable source that there is a second wave of releases planned for 2016, wishlisting for me is more mechanicum weirdness 😀
Also that’s quite a big departure from standard operating procedure to announce a pre-order 2 weeks ahead of schedule!, guess they are trying to get a slice of ear marked black friday cash…
Well they can’t use The Hobbit as the scapegoat for one week pre-orders anymore 😉
I wonder what the ruleset will be like. Will it be standard 40k with tweaks like the FW rules or will it be completely different? AoS style rules? Board game even?
Will be getting at least 2 sets to add to my current 40k armies either way.
I’ve heard rumors of a ship boarding board game based around the events in recently released macragges honour graphic novel. I.e ultramarines vs world bearers. If that rumor holds water i would expect a combination of rules like the ones found in execution force and a shooting and close combat mechanic like you had in necromunda. With hopefully a datasheet for use with 40k rules i.e. wargear rules and points cost, like the mini codexes found in recent 40k campaign boxes, that or it will be in white dwarf.
id expect that to be honest. All the models will be legion neutral though to entice more sales from other legion players 🙂
Yup, wouldn’t be surprised if this has dictated the release cadence of FW’s recent chapter upgrade packs. Wonder if this will see FW in GW shops following this release, should have some space with the hobbit and lotr out the way in the shop, and this will just be a box to start with…
Funny that this goes up for preorder on the same day as Rick Preistly’s Beyond the Gates of Antares officially releases.
I know which one I’ll be buying (Hint: it’s the one that’s already available for pre-ordering, has pre-order bonuses and is engaged with it’s community!)
Can’t really say that the HH range isn’t engaged with the customer look at all what FW do already within theirs?
As a friend of mine keeps telling me: GW and FW are separate companies (technically true). I’m judging one, not the other.
They aren’t though really. For example GW doing the FW lines is a big things the fans want based on feedback at events that they do.
They share the same parent company who own the IP, but FW have their own management structure and are a business entity in their own right.
I’ve got my pre-order in for Antares.
I’m in Oz and, comparing with Terminator Genesys, I realised it’s cheaper to order from Warlord UK (it gets free postage) than to wait for it to come to Aus and buy it here, even from our online discount retailers – which is cool cos’ it gets me the free gifts…
Hah, Oz eh? Where you located? I’m in Adelaide, pre-ordered the starter set myself.
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy….
I can’t wait to see what Warren has to say about this 🙂
Just when I think GW meh, done, dammit maybe about to fall of the wagon (again).
doubt very much its for me. All about the minis for me, but they would have to be quite amazing for me to buy a new GW product
I will almost certainly buy this. Whether or not I will return to the GW fold remains to be seen.
If there will be more 30k plastic and no compulsory FW purchases..maybe!
I was secretly hoping they would do a proper rehash of Space Marine (aka Epic). I still have some of more old MkIV models circa Rogue Trader 40k, maybe they will work in a pinch.
Nah, I won’t trust them after Age of Sigmar.
If the Heresy just had living fluff, sadly we know almost all Primarchs die.
The way GW handles its fluff… I do not like it. They should reboot it, like Marvel or DC do when they realize they have put themselves into a corner.
Not all Primarchs have died…
Dorn – Missing
Lion – In a coma
Fulgrim – Demon Prince
Angron – Demon Prince
Mortarion – Demon Prince
Russ – Missing
Vulkan – Missing
Alpharius / Omegon – One of them is dead
to rattle off the few I can think of.
Never mind the rumours around the imperium that Guiliman is healing in stasis though its supposed to be impossible.
Jaghatai Khan – Missing
Perturabo – Demon Prince
Magnus – Demon Prince
and as ever you all forget about Corax…..which is the way we like it….
The “fluff” is what makes an otherwise mediocre tabletop wargame something special. If they throw it out (as they did with Warhammer Fantasy) they will basically kick their own IP in the nads. If you thought the AoS nerd rage was bad I think a 40k reboot would be a massively bigger backlash.
Moving the setting forward, exploring new aspects of the existing timeline, even occasional retconning of stuff they want to go away can and has been done but throwing it all out and doing a reboot would be a terrible direction for GW.
Yeah cus AoS fluff reboot has been met well personally i dont mind but just look at the recent vitriol online… As for a fluff reboot for the 40k universe not a lot you could really do other than the emperor returns, k’tan break free, eldar unite, nids consume, orks waaagggh, chaos is chaotic, and you pretty much got AoS fluff in grim dark other than you would have a second coming of space marines with a prolification of primarchs or rediscovered gene seed or something like that, oh and feral eldar aka space wood elves. Best thing for a… Read more »
i don’t think GW need an entire reboot or shift in the fluff. There’s still a Hell of a lot of their own universe they haven’t explored. The HH has shown just how successful they can be when they utilise the history. We know we have a series of books on the way based on the onset of Orks into the Imperium. That could easily see a proper campaign/boxed set release. I personally would love to see the First War for Armageddon fleshed out into a proper campaign. Go back to the days of the Third War… or the 13th… Read more »
Love and Hate GW adds, show me the F’ing product you super secret Bastards.
I’m eager for this one, I think they are going to be pretty shrewd with this one and I wouldn’t worry that it will go the AoS way. What they aren’t about to do is mess with the whopping cash cow that is Forgeworlds range. I imagine these will be stand along skirmish games where the models are compatible to the HH wider range.
If GW then introduce FW product in to their stores as well for the basic kits and rulebooks its a win win surely?
The teenage me, the one who got goosebumps every single time he read that “In the grim darkness…” text on the first page of every 40k printed material, would be all over this. Somewhere along the way space marines went from the most awesome thing ever conceived by man to somewhere in the range of GIJoe action figures and Transformers. I just can’t look at all the grimdark with any sort of seriousness anymore. It’s like Age of Sigmar but with guns. I’m sure this will be a huge hit for GW and in my opinion they should have done… Read more »
Can’t wait to see what’s in the box….
sounds good at the moment.
This is definitely worth watching. 30k has huge potential, and so long as GW doesn’t interfere with the Forge World rules and ranges, then extra resources and plastic models would be most welcome.
I have been waiting and avoiding Kickstarter for this. This had better be good.
I’m interested bu i want to know what this is going to be.
I wouldn’t mind a good boardgame, after all you can still use the miniatures for the FW HH rules and i’m not sure what GW HH rules would be like.
I’m kinda hoping this is a 15mm or perhaps even a 6mm game.
I don’t think GW needs another 28mm Warhammer game, or do they?
They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did it in another scale other than 28mm. They only have The Hobbit in a smaller scale, and this game would more likely tie into 40k and therefore sell more. It would lead to a dead end like Dreadfleet if they did 6mm. Shame as it would be a good change to have games in that scale.
Don’t think so a while ago there were pictures of sprues with plastic HH Minis (http://imgur.com/a/r8FRk) on the net and they looked like the normal GW size.
I’m really going to have to try and resist buying into this. I know it will be a money pit and I’d have a hell of a time settling on which Legions I want.
All of them? 😉
It would be kinda of awesome when GW suporterted their HH with boxed releases with closed boxes that contain models, rules and a living campaign.
