Forge World Heresy Era Guardsmen Coming Soon!
September 23, 2014 by brennon
Forge World have been teasing the coming of a new faction to the Horus Heresy fighting and soon we'll be seeing the Solar Auxilia, Heresy era Guardsmen, taking to the battlefield. These soldiers look tough as old boots...
This painted version of both their upcoming tank and infantry appeared on their bulletin yesterday. The force is called the Solar Auxilia and they look incredibly sci-fi compared to their modern compatriots in the 41st Millennium. Thankfully a few more shots have appeared on the internet showing off what the rest of them are going to look like too.
As you can see their look is a lot more high sci-fi than the grim dark and almost basic look we've come to expect from the Imperial Guard, and that's not just Cadians we're talking about either. The look brings them in line with the design and aesthetic of the existing Space Marines from this period and then gives them a dose of steampunk-like character to make them look more industrial and down to earth.
I'm a big fan of these and certainly something I'd like to see more of. If you look at the concept art you'll see that there are plenty of colours for plenty of different regiments and armies so you're imagination can almost go wild it appears. Let's hope we see some cool variations on the kit too from planet to planet.
It reminds me a lot of how cool the Clone Troopers looked when compared to their 'original' Storm Trooper variants that we'd all been used to seeing. What's also quite cool is that they're more in line with a lot of other sci-fi ranges out there including companies like Anvil so you might be in with a shout of mixing two collections into one!
Thanks to number32 for the heads up!
Are you interested in seeing more on the Solar Auxilia?

It is rather refreshing to see more scifi guardsmen (still no guardswomen) than we have got used to.
I prefer to think that the ‘guardswoman’ inside the armour didn’t need the ‘boob plating’ that most of them seem to need. Just look at the MERCS Yellow Jacket who you wouldn’t be able to tell was a lady unless you asked.

Well skallagrim in Youtube has proved that boob plating is unpractical. So yeah, maybe not those to tell guardswomen apart from guardsmen.
But we’d still love to see some guardswomen. They don’t need ‘boob plating’ but I’d still love to see some female minis in the line.
Indeed. I mean they would have to have boob plating to tell them apart as it’s not only way to do so.
Some subtle sculpting and awareness of body types would help
The soldiers in the illustration look like men
Oh yeah I’d love to see some female heads without helmets and the like.

Yeah that’s the case for Firewarriors, men and women have the exact same armour so you could never tell the difference
Some of these pics have been around for a while and for me, were the thing that tipped me over the edge into 30k. I am very, very excited 🙂
Close up, the armour looks a little like an old fashioned diving suit, with boots and gloves literally bolted onto the main suit. I’d say they are more dieselpunk than steampunk (although a lot of dieselpunk things get mislabelled as steampunk) and diesel punk is by far my favourite of all of the -punks 😀
those look pretty snazzy now don’t they 😀
30k is where its at it seems! They remind me of the old ‘Nort’ troopers from 2000ad Rogue Trooper.
Yes! Well spotted on the Nort Troopers. I was struggling to think what they reminded me of.
I like these models – Very different from 40K guardspeople and yet recogniseably Imperial.
Forgeworld models, better pricing and more realistic rules would be THE shit .. if this is what the guard looked like in 30k, i say scrap 40k altogether.
30K is looking better and better.
I scrapped 40k as soon as I heard that forgeworld were doing 30k.
A lot of people seem to forget that even though it is 10,000 years in the past, the technology in the 30k imperium universe was mostly more advanced than it is in the 40k imperium universe. Hence the more sci-fi look to everything that forgeworld is doing right now in terms to the imperial armies
Man, 40k is nothing compared to what Forge World is producing for 30k.
It’s just a pity that they cost almost 3 times as much as the regular GW models.
True. Horus Heresy is not a hobby for anyone for whom cost is an issue. Nor is it for anyone who doesn’t like 40k rules. It’s still basically 40k, but it’s like 40k done really, really well.
They deserve a better rule set imo … i couldnt say it for 40k anymore as i think that line has gone completely fubar. Forge world understands how to make Warhammer feel like more than just fantasy in space. Thats something i can stand behind and support, but not by buying any of it as it is now.

I like these. They have a throw back to the original plastic guardsmen box lasguns (the 80s one). Yet also have the look of a nation that understands and i actually creating technology, instead of slavishly copying and degenerating every copy.
I think it might be worth bearing in mind that it is not 100% correct to call Solar Auxilia “30k Guard” – At the actual Warhammerfest seminar it was explicitly stated they were an elite formation (with more of an offensive role involving venturing forth alongside the Space Marine Legions – which would make the term Auxilia make sense – requiring their funky void armour and prtty good equipment,, rather than being a more traditional garrison force a la normal Guard) so in this regard they are probably closer to Stormtroopers. That said I don’t doubt that you would be… Read more »
