Games Workshop’s Made To Order Scheme Launches
October 15, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop has now launched their new Made To Order Scheme which will bring back a selection of old miniatures that you thought had gone the way of the dodo.
Here's how it works...
"Sometimes products we haven't made for a while become available for a limited period of time. These products can be found in the 'Made to Order' section. They will always be available for at least 48 hours, but the more you buy, the longer we'll keep them on sale!
As we don't start making them until we receive orders they can take up to 28 days to dispatch. You will receive a dispatch email when they leave, so you know they are on the way."
What's On Offer?
The focus this time around is a selection of old Warhammer 40,000 models with an Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum feel to them. Here's a selection of the different models coming back this month starting with some variants on the Imperial Guard.
The Mordians were one of the big forces in the Imperial Guard line-up which drew me into Warhammer 40,000 in the first place. The big brash colours were certainly very inviting. The Valhallan Ice Warriors join the nostalgia trip back in time too.
To reassure you all of these models will be coming your way in metal so they'll have that familiar heft that you so enjoyed when you first got your models.
Plenty of characters are also part of the mix including the Tallarn here represented by Captain Al'Rahem.
The shining golden figure that is Lord Solar Macharius might not be the greatest model out there, especially compared to the plastic offerings we get now, but he sure looks as intense as he did when we first saw him.
Finally, we have a more modern set of metal models that I LOVE and thought should have continued as part of the Astra Militarum even now. The Cadian Kasrkin look the business.
As Stormtroopers go THESE are the elite soldiers of the Imperium that I wanted to fight alongside. The big chunky armour, suped-up lasguns and seriously awesome looking helmets too.
There's plenty to choose from so delve in and let us know if you'll be picking stuff up.
Drop your thoughts in the comments below!

Those mini’s are a blast from the past and no mistake!!! The different types of guard regiments back then were great!! I remember an awesome story in an old white dwarf about the tallarn desert riders (or whatever they were called) unearthing something bad in the desert. Can’t remember if it was necrons or chaos but it certainly captured my imagination and really got across the sense of horror and desperation as they struggled against it!! Can’t remember if they succeeded or were wiped out though! I still have loads of 90’s white dwarfs hidden in my folks loft, might… Read more »
That was Tallarn itself where they unearthed a big Chaos object which led to Eldar attacking before it was too late after which they both teamed up to beat the subsequent Chaos invasion.
it’s not quite a return to the days when GW had ALL THE BITZ in stock (and one guy – top lad called Tony – employed full time to “curate” the moulds) but I’m certain this will be a popular move.
If I thought I’d have anything like the time to paint an entire Mordian army I’d have a go!
Mail order was awesome. It was their best feature.
Got the lord. It is a step in the right direction 😀
I think “scheme” is the right description. It is another limited edition without saying so – and they have chosen some terrible minis. Maybe they just found a stash and need to unload them. (wouldn’t be the fist time)
Mordians were awesome. Derek painted them like Foreign Legion!
“It is another limited edition without saying so”
They did say so. “We’ve brought these models back for a limited time” on their website front page.
Sure, but the ‘made to order’ suggests it’s not that limited.
Not that there’s anything wrong with what they’re doing from a business point of view.
It could have been marketed a bit better.
If GW’s current efforts suck, as they certainly does, it only makes sense to recast the old stuff. That’s where the money is. Good move… laughing at the new models was getting old 🙂
“do”
With Mail Order back we can once again get our hands on some golden oldies like those shown. It’s good thing. Hopefully GW also brings back being able to buy bits via Mail Order at some point.
Shame that the Kasrkin never made it into plastic and we needed up with the Scions..
Doubtlessly some of the best IG figures ever.
Thankfully I’ve got loads 😎
I have always loved the Vallhallans and have to remain strong for the next 2 days and not put in an order
I don’t even play Imperial Guard and I am tempted to pick up the Enginseer. That model was one of my favourites when I started in Warhammer 40k and made me want to convert an army for Adeptus Mechanicus (which given that I was just starting out at the time pretty much consisted of me painting a Land Raider red before getting distracted by something shiny).
This is awesome! I’ve needed more Karskins especially the special weapons and while I haven’t seen the US prices yet going by what I have seen IMO they don’t seem to be excessively expensive. Can’t wait to see what else they add.
In the movement phase, Sly Marbo remains stationary and moves the gaming table 6″ in any direction.
Good God!
I was tidying out some space in my games room the other day and actually came across some of these. Old metal cadians, old catachans and old Kasarkins, not even cleaned up and completely forgotten about. And a load of Inquisitor stuff I havent used for years.
I wonder if they’ll bring that back too?
Thanks a lot GW for……reminding me just how ancient I am…..
Sadly these to me ain’t even that old… 🙁
Indeed they are ‘new’ compared to what I’d want to see.
Yup I was hoping to see some stuff for. The 80’s but I guess that was never going to happen
From the 80’s I meant
I was expecting you could order what you want not what GW choose to make available. Makes you wonder how they managed it back in the day…
I was hoping for the same. I was keen on the old late eighties/early nineties WHFB miniatures, especially the dwarven ranges.
I demand Warmaster miniatures! >:(
This will cause a bit of disruption in the ebay sellers , I saw sly marbo selling for £30 + postage
nice hopefully the will be around so I can get some? after Xmass?
I always liked the kasrkin models.
I just looked up the models on the website. For something that is made per order I find it hard to bereave they chose to go with metal apposed to the resin that they switched to a few years back. The only reason for them being metal is they where cased long ago as metal. Therefore they are not cast per order.
Sorry, but there is no evidence that these are old models they found in a corner of the warehouse.
It seems an awfully elaborate ruse to believe GW would hold onto the orders for 4 weeks just because. Not impossible, but keep it simple.
Given how little we actually know about how it is going to work over time, I think the only thing that can be said is that this is pretty cool for IG players, and could potentially be cool for others going forward.
You do have a point.
I was under the impression that they steered away from metal for resin long ago. It could be them going back to metal over resin for small runs.
I personally prefer metal over the resin they have at the moment.
they will probably be using the old mould’s to see what life the program has before casting new moulds.
Because metal minis are much more viable for very short production runs, so long as you already have the machinery to do it. Also the masters and moulds are likely already set up for metal manufacture and to transition to resin would be a large cost for a very short run. Any minis that they make in metal but don’t sell can also be melted down and recast.
So this service is that GW will occasionally pick a batch of old metal sculpts, put them up on pre-order then make a batch to fill those pre-orders before offering a new selection. If something proves to be popular enough they will make extra.
Basically then this is an exercise in figuring out if they can sell more old sculpts while keeping the stock level small, rather than allowing customers to pick from the back catalogue.
Spent a massive amount of painting time this month painting a stonking load of Vallhallans and scratch building a transport worthy of the hard slog basic winter troops, a large enough vehicle to deliver 50 or more to where they need to be, with some sort of heavily armoured animal of a beast for the 40k worlds. Just finished painting 80 of them after stripping them at the start of this month also done around 70 Cadians Plastics that were undercoated, I have a lot of other stuff to do including Vastorians or whatever they where called and a stack… Read more »
Tempted to pick up a couple of bits but surprised at some of the omissions. Where are the Vostroyans? Or that awesome Steel Legion Captain with the skull-faced gas mask?
To correct my own lack of research, the Vostroyans are readily available from GW anyway.
Some Warhammer would be nice. Specifically Bretonnian peasants. I liked those, especially the heads.
Those Cadians look great… maybe a bit chubby, but still great. What happened?
A shame they don’t have the boxed unit of 10’s the old Imperial Guard models had (6 normal chaps, Sergeant, 2 heavy weapon crew) to buy. I’ve got an old Imperial Guard army that a unit of each.
I don’t really know why we haven’t seen more of the old Imperial Guards updated and why we’ve been left with Cadians tbh.
Bring back the Brettonian trebuchet and grail relique!
Great to see these old models back, not terribly priced either!
