Games Workshop Prepare Us For Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse
June 17, 2019 by brennon
Games Workshop is preparing everyone for the coming of Warhammer 40,000: Apocalypse which looks to throw you into literal mass battles on the tabletop using your armies.
The massive boxed set that is coming your way is packed with rules for getting your forces Apocalypse Ready (better than beach body ready?). The rules contained within are very similar to those used for Warhammer 40,000 which will give you a leg up but they have been tweaked to make games faster at this insanely large scale.
For example, damage isn't actually tossed out until the end of a turn meaning that every unit is going to get to do something on the tabletop before it takes catastrophic amounts of damage. No more just focusing in on your friends Imperial Knight he's just bought.
The designers behind the game went into more details about what you can expect from Apocalypse here...
It all sounds very fun if you like chucking all your toys onto the tabletop. It's a big step up from something like Open Play in the current rules too. Datasheets for every unit that currently exists will be available for free to download at the launch of Apocalypse meaning that you'll be able to get stuck right in.
Oh, and did you know the game now uses movement trays?!
Since the game is now played at a detachment/formation level you are activating things on a massive level so moving everything individually would have been pretty annoying. These new trays (which are by no means a new product within the industry) make all of that easier.
I could see a few people picking these up regardless of wanting to play Apocalypse just to get their units around the table quicker.
Apocalypse Battalions
As well as the new gubbins to help you play the game, Games Workshop has also put together a series of different Apocalypse Battalions which will be helpful when taking your army up to that new level of insanity.
We've only picked out a few of these currently but of course, you have Space Marines in the mix. Every faction is catered for, however, giving you a wealth of infantry and a healthy chunk of miniatures to start using in your games.
Some of these sets contain a lot of infantry whilst others are more focused on the idea of vehicles and walkers like you can see here with the Orks and Necrons.
I particularly like this monster mash that you get inside the Tyranid Apocalypse Battalion.
Running an entire force of big monsters would be a lot of fun in Apocalypse and in regular games too. Some of these sets aren't useful for starting an army but they do give you some good ways to bolt on new options to your force.
More of these are available to view HERE if you'd like to look at what other offerings Games Workshop have lined up.
What do you reckon to Apocalypse?

If there is a big savings on the Spearhead Detachment boxed sets, I might be interested, I’ve always wanted a massive Eldar army (to sit on the shelf and never be painted or used). Game sounds a bit different with all casualty removal at the end of the turn… but that just means more book keeping. Movement trays and no area of effect weapons is the way forward for a massive sci-fi game in 28mm.
Looks like the Eldar one is basically a bunch of wraitguard and two wraith lords. They’ll all be of limited availability which kind of sucks cuz I can never quickly jump on these things but that is a me problem.
We used to have some big old battles back in ’89 but it felt a lot more affordable back then.
I do think that GW should release plastic kits for Eldar Aspect Warriors.
The Eldar need new everything in plastic … as do anyone else who isn’t some kind of spacemarine at the moment.
Totally agree about the need for these spearhead boxes to have a significant saving. As a treadhead, the astra militarum box is attractive with four tanks and a command squad with a couple of heavy weapon teams, but it would need to be no more than £120 to make me want to instantly buy… Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised 😉
Well I talked to this one guy today in LGS that’s nearest to me and he speculated that that Imperial Knight one could be best value because it could cost same as or maybe little more single Knight Castellan that is included alongside with 2 Helverins.
Movement trays eh? Well this is interesting turn with new Apocalypse. From new boxed sets I am most tempted by IG and Tau ones.
Kinda humorous, Warhammer Fantasy went from needing movement trays to skirmish. 40k goes from skirmish to needing movement trays.
I’m poking fun but this Apocalypse looks pretty neat.
Never bothered with Apocalypse before but this is the first time I’ll be getting it. Really interested in the fact that you only remove units at the end of the turn, so irrespective of who goes first, everything gets to shoot. That could be something that could filter down to future editions of 40k.
As a non-40k player but person who reads this site (so someone who reads quite a bit of 40k news and opinion) I think this is a really good idea.
Yeah I do as well mate. I am not a 40k player but this could bring back alot of people. This Apoc 40k looks quicker than playing Standard 40k.
Continuing in theme, I too am not a 40k player (though I have had a few kill team games over the past year and enjoyed them) and I like the look of the rules too . Very interesting
Are you guys still allowed to say “beach body ready” in the UK?
Yeah shops still use it. I just find it a dumb saying…
Marketing is littered with dumb sayings, that is for sure.
I can only hope that this is just a test for new Epic scale rules, because it kind of seems silly to do this in 28mm scale.
I liked the old epic game from the 90s. Wee counters that you had to put down before the turn began. First Fire, Advance and Charge if I remember correctly. Always enjoyed that game.
I really wish it would come back. It came out at a perfectly terrible time for me. Just out of high school and in the military, it wasn’t practical for me to collect and play during those years. By the time I was able to get back into the game, it was being discontinued.
3rd edition Epic 40k was the best version
I believe there are already some people working out how to add ‘Epic’ rules into the new Adeptus Titanicus game.
If it is mate blimey I think I would shed loads of money on Epic if it was realised again and brought on to our interest. Could be a good Weekend game for On Table Top. @warzan
Clear plastic skirmish trays look interesting if they aren’t too ridiculously priced (who am I kidding, right?) As for the rest, there are already too many models on the table for a sci-fi game as things stand with 40k, I see no need for even more going on. With that number of ridonkulously huge models on the table, the game just disintegrates into “I plonk a vast amount of plastic on the table. We all roll thousands of dice. I remove a large amount of plastic off the table”! There’s no skill, no strategy, just an exercise in haulage. It… Read more »
+1 to everything you said.
those movement trays only work on an open table, what you need for this are the 3D movement trays (TM) @warzan maybe now is the time to sell that genius idea to workshop
I couldn’t agree more mate!
Good work @avernos ! When I saw the words “movement trays” the first thing that popped into my head was 40K branded zip-lock baggies. 😛 😀 😛
This looks fun! I can’t wait to play it.
The movement trays are an interesting move for them. I do like the occasional big game but they always take forever to play rhrough. If this simplifies the rules so we can play through a massive game quicker I’m all up for it.
How many hundreds of counters you think we’ll be keeping track of and picking up each turn? Ever tried playing Mechwarrior Darkage at Apocalypse scale? Too many tokens, and im curious to see how damagew at the end works, because between shooty and chopppy it would be a nightmare!
So far, only interested in savings, money talks and GW’s games have been getting more and more expensive, hard to get me mates into it, price point real high.
Many wallets will die is this war.
I would like yo play 40k like this. I do like the idea of just having SAT and the other one rather than having the tables. It makes 40k alot easier for beginners. If Apocalypse rules work out I hope GW role it out for all 40k. Yes that would mean a change of Codex, but maybe GW could avoid that by just releasing an update conversion to play 40k like this.
Good attempt GW Will look to follow this it has my interest. 🙂
Quite interested in this one, I would like to see how it plays first before going all in but those boxes look good if the price is right
I both dread and can’t wait that it arrives.
Dread cause the first time it costed me a fortune, can’t wait cause this shall push me to get one army over the 2000 pts mark.
Epic was my favorite game, in the day. Apocalypse is my second favorite. The Leviathan I scratch built was a favorite target for everyone. This looks promising.
This looks cool, and having had a peak at some of the datasheets, not quite as “simple” as Epic for statlines, but certainly has that flavour (everything has a stat like a Titan woulda had in Epic)
I’m almost finished painting my Apocalypse army from the first time round…
