New Games Workshop Pre-Orders For The Cult Mechanicus Are Up!
May 23, 2015 by brennon
The new pre-orders are in for Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 where the Adeptus Mechanicus are getting some more upgrades in the form of a new Cult Mechanicus Codex, a Deluxe Version of it, the new Tech Priest Dominus and a squad of either Fulgurite Electro-Priests or Corpuscarii Electro-Priests...
The Models
The new models are for the rather creepy looking Dominus and the equally weird and interesting Electro-Priests. All of them have something of the weird about them and it certainly plays into the strange way in which we've seen the Adeptus Mechanicus develop...
I think they've come out very nicely and it continues to add to the awesome line-up we've seen develop from Games Workshop for the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Electro-Priests with the large staves, the Fulgurite, are certainly a prospect not to be messed with.
The Books
As well as the models there are some new books to help develop the Adeptus Mechanicus as a faction and they come in both standard and limited edition flavours...
As well as the different books there are also the new Datacards. These are a really nice little addition to most of the new armies I think and they come with a few helpful aids as well as being quite nice to round off a collection.
Have you been won over by the Adeptus Mechanicus?
Let us know in the comments!

In two minds about the Electro-Priests, but I think they’ve absolutely nailed it with the Magos.
Electro priest looks like he’s about to pop out a massive poop and has assumed the crouching-pooper-hidden-load position.
The electro-priests look terrible but I think that’s the GW paintjob.
The magos has a whoop-ass cane. That’s all I need to know.
Lol, just lol.
I think that the electro priests are some of the best minis they’ve done for a long time.
Touch of Warmachine to them, but I think that it works.
Yeah, I guess there is a bit of WM going on there. But I definitely like that Tech Priest.
He’s larger than I expected (that’s a 50mm base- at first I thought he was on one of their new 32mm ones). That does make the $36 price tag seem somewhat fairer (at least somewhat).
That Domino’s priest is perhaps the best model of the lineup for that entire army. I might get him just to paint.
*Dominus that is. Autocorrect really sucks.
I think everyone needs a dominos priest personally 😉
but no one needs a holey pizza
Would you like that on a 12″, 15″, or 18″ salver? Comes with a cute little collectible mitre in the middle to keep the lid from sticking to the cheese topping. The “Communion” special has a wafer crust.
Dominus looks a lot like what we have seen in 40k art. I am impressed.
I absolutely love these releases, especially the squat of Electro-Priests / the other guys.
Is this the second Mechanicus codex they’ve released this year? Or is there just one which has been trailed but not released? I’m not keeping up like I used to!
There are two at the moment. This one and the Skitarii. I think there might be one more coming although I’m not sure.
So I wasn’t imagining it. Shame… 3 Codexes to get the rules and background for everything? As if the figures weren’t pricey enough!
These codex cost less than those of the more established factions; part of the blame as to why this new range is being released in little parts, is because GW don’t want to release a “fuller” army book in which a bunch of units have rules but the models are still a chunk of time away (this allowing other companies to release their own models). There are rumours for a 3rd codex, whether this is another mechanicus faction, or it is just combining these 2 together (personally I think with the exception of the Dominus, these 2 factions don’t look… Read more »
Yeah, I get the reasons for it (I didn’t know these codexes were cheaper, so thanks for that tip). Still, I don’t much sympathise with the reasons! I don’t see how putting out a model for something prevents a third party putting out an equivalent. As for prices for other stuff… Some of it is eye wateringly expensive, and some of it is just expensive in my opinion because I don’t much like their design choices, but that by no means applies to everything they do. I’ve loved most of these Skitari/mechanicus stuff, and agree that some of the kits… Read more »
You’re on the right track. I see it more as if they release a codex with all the rules and units, yet don’t have the models available yet for purchase, it gives a window of reason and legitimacy (be it small) for other companies making GW’s lineup. Said companies could say that due to the lack of a model, they are filling in that need people are asking for. I don’t always support GW’s policies, but due to so many small fries trying to make a buck off of GW’s clout by making copycat or interpreted stuff I don’t blame… Read more »
I thought those tracked cyborg things were pretty reasonable, and I liked the look of them, but there doesn’t seem to be any attempt at consistency.
That Dominus is the best model for these I have seen and gives a great alternative for my HQ for my Iron Hands Allies that I plan to do eventually!
The dominus model looks fantastic, and really well detailed, but I’m never going to pay
£22 to get one. Think I’ll get the codex instead.
The Forge World Dominus is £1.50 cheaper than the GW one – if you’re a Mechanicum player, going for the resin is a no brainer in my opinion.
I realize that the Mechanicus stuff is made by tinkering odd bits together, but the Dominus is over the top, and just looks like a heap of scrap, with too much detail, and a horrible price. Having said that, I like the priests… in a Mardi Gras parade kind of way.
Sorry… forgot. No dissenting comments allowed. It all looks lovely 🙂 .
What’s the phrase? “It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it”
There are other statements, on this thread alone, that are more inflammatory @erastus. Still… always refreshing to be the sole target of your uber-sensitivity witch hunt 🙂
You’re welcome 🙂
It’s exactly as described in the novels. It’s an amazing model. Get over it.
Love the Priest/Dominus model.
The bald, topless guys in skirts are rather lame though. Feels like ive seen them a million times before.
To be fair, I think many of the times you’ve seen them before have been either GW releases of similar models or conversions designed to look like these guys: they’ve been in the game for decades.
Which isn’t to say that the idea is entirely original to GW, or that no one else has done anything similar – perhaps with their own twist on it. Just that in some ways these kits are updates of what GW has been doing for a long time.
I love the Dominus! looks very Blanchey and weird. I do approve! Not too keen on the electro-priests, think they’d be better if the legs were replaced with cables that could be painted to emmit electrical discharges.
Wow, not sure why i deserved a thumbs down for that.
no opinion allowed obviously lol (shhhh the gw fanspies are watching us)
Magos is fantastic, I would even go as far to say perfect. Electro-priest are another print before finished CAD design – and those Variacs on the backs of the ranged ones just look silly. I know GW always had those outlying weaker sculpts (Yhetees etc) but it seems every other one at present.
The Dominus is quite nice actually but not £22 nice.
£22 for a single mini is just bizarre, when did these kinds of prices actually start? The space marine Captain was £12 at release and I thought that was expensive.
had not looked at price – well rhymes with duck hat
The prices have been creeping up on clam packs for a while. The bizarre thing is that it’s only on new releases. The oldest plastic characters still cost less than a tenner.
Aggh I started moaning about GW pricings again and I had to stop myself, if you buy GW then that is cool and more power to you, but for me personally they have continued to lose my money to other more reasonably priced companies….
GW I miss you! When you start treating me right I will come crawling back!! 😉
one can still moan about pricing without insulting anyone you know 😛 but alot of product related comments are sometimes taken personaly so I know what you mean ..
^^ This sentiment is bang on the mark. Not problem about folk saying the prices are too high but calling people out as idiots for paying those prices goes too far (not that I’ve seen anyone do that on this thread yet, which is nice).
You’ve echoed my sentiments exactly, @solar . On occasion I’ve bought singles as specialty characters at the local GW when I didn’t have time to wait for Canada Post and our Customs zealots to deliver something from another company. But none of the new singles are within what I would consider “reasonable” for a model… and it’s not a question of finances. It’s a matter of where to draw the line, and not feeling like I’m being duped.
Happily, most of the models in the last few years have been easy to steer clear of.
for me they passed bizarre a long time ago
I just checked the space marine captain is now £18!!!
Makes me wish I had bought him at £12 now lol
Just when was a single character more expensive than the whole codex?
Aside from that the Magos does look nice and all but not £22 nice, the others are a major letdown for me.
Their prices on characters are all over the place. some years ago you could buy an army box for under 50€. Now its 30€ for a single model.
But then again, they lost lots of customers by pricing them out, thus the one left probably are the ones willing to pay the buck.
Agreed 100%. I haven’t bought anything new in years, I just can’t bring myself to pay those prices. When I can get a kickstarter with hundreds of models for the same price as a minimum requirement squad or one model, it’s not even a contest.
On the flip side, I totally know people that have walked in gw a dropped 2k in one trip.
Others buy each new army that comes out. If like to where they get s that money. Lol
Technically their prices aren’t over all over the place with the clam pack mono-pose plastics. They’ve consistently gone up in price :p
£9 was the standard once upon a time…
Think these are rather good minis but as usual; duck hat price
I like the dominus tech priest, he would make a good master priest, I think for a imp guard army.
Great models though not sold on the electro priests, great as models but in context I’m not sure… clearly someone watched The Amazing Spiderman 2 …
That Tech Priest is probably my favourite miniature they have ever made. He is exactly what the Ad-Mech should look like.
As for the price tag, each to their own. We all have our price point at which we say “Nope” but I’m ok with it. As an ex- WM/H player, it’s the same cost as a heavy warjack for a miniature on the same base size. Seems about right to me. Sure It’s be great if it were cheaper but I’d buy from a discount retailer anyway.
I think it was in Dark Apostle where this model was described, and the model perfectly represents it if I recall. I can’t believe you got negged for such a sensible comment. The price is expensive for a plastic model, but in fairness this model is a very detailed model for plastic (not seen a plastic company that has produced as good or better as of yet) in two sprues, and is similar to price to other companies (other companies, not GW’s) resin offerings. Though GW can afford to lower the price in order to stimulate greater sales and profit,… Read more »
There are options @poosh . The Magos comes with a choice of two different heads, two different pistols and two different large weapons. That’s more options than most mono pose kits get.
Ah I see now. Two extra alt weapons – better than nothing I suppose. I know there is a another head as they have two different painted models but my eyes can’t see it on the sprue.
I think down voting was harsh but @lunchbox‘s statement is inaccurate – the heavy jacks are 50 mm not 40. Its also a poor comparison they are considerably bulkier models and in term of points are between a 6th to a 5th of the average army size – so putting it in 40 k terms a knight (in % of average army). Personally would not pay that for a gaming piece that is such a small % of army but it is nice enough to be a painting project and I can value those minis more.
Quote from GW site: “This multi-part, twenty component plastic kit contains everything needed to make one Tech-Priest Dominus, and is supplied with one Citadel 50mm Round Base.”
Not so inaccurate after all?
Agreed you will likely need a few more miniatures to play 40k than WM/H but from a miniature comparison sense, it’s pretty close. There are people who don’t necessarily play 40k with GW miniatures, for example the growing community who play Necro/inquisimunda and/or Inq28. Also my comparison didn’t take into account the increased prices of character warjacks and such.
50mm I stand corrected, seems they are popping out new bases with every release.
Its still a poor comparison, because of reasons I stated I stand by those.
Inquisitor 28 mm would have been my interest.
GW are the prime example of the character tax so that kinda a moot point.
The Tech Priest Dominus is a very evocative model that captures the depiction of the Tech Magi in the background perfectly. As for the elctropriests, I think they look fine, and again capture the associated background fluff well. Then there are the rules – the Tech Priest Dominus has some great littloe rules like MAster of the Machine from the latest White dwarf, which should make him and any unit he joins rather durable, and both the Tech Priest and both types of Electropriest get both a 5+ invulnerable save and Feel No Pain as standard (the tech priest also… Read more »
Tech Preist is a must buy for me. Its perfect. Very, very painful though…..its equivalent of 30 quid here in NZ.
