Games Workshop Discuss The New Warhammer 40K App
July 10, 2020 by brennon
Games Workshop dive into more details about the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 App which is coming out to support the release of the new edition. Do you reckon you'll be subscribing to this?

As it stands, the free options from the App allow you to access the Core Rules for the game (already available in PDF form). Plus, any Codex that you pick up from the new 9th Edition of the game will come with a way for you to access it through the app as well using My Warhammer.
When you subscribe to the app (for £3.99 a month) you'll get access to a few more bits. In addition to building on the Codex and Core Rules options you also get a big reference of rules, a way to build your armies and all of the rules from 8th Edition Codexes until they get updated.

So, to recap. You'll be able to access the Core Rules for free and any Codexes you own physically through the use of a code. If you subscribe, you'll be able to make and verify army lists and construct them for use in your games plus access the Codexes from 8th Edition until they get updated. Once they are updated, you'll have to use the codes from new Codexes as per normal in order to access their new rules.
I'm sure folks have some thoughts on this and it would be neat to hear what you have to say in the comments below. I can see the reasoning behind the subscription myself as it should hopefully mean Games Workshop are pushed to maintain and tweak it as time goes on.
Will you be using this or sticking to writing down your lists on a piece of paper?

Paper all the way!
It will be interesting if GW start to use this as a primary method of rolling out rules/point updates. If that happens under the subscription service, then it would not compare favourably to other equivalents (e.g FFG and how they update the meta for X-wing via their app, for free).
I am also slightly surprised that the subscription appears to be on a monthly basis only. Where’s the annual subscription offer, or lifetime subscription? Admittedly, the last is probably over optimistic, but almost every subscription service has an annual option that is usually more favourable for the customer.
“usually more favourable for the customer.”
I think you might have answered your own question there… 😉
Too true!
It’s a good quick way to go through the new rules to see the changes.
It would be even better if there was a version history and you could decide what version to use …
I might be reading that wrong, but subscribers don’t seem to get a lot beyond an army builder. I’ll stick with paper thanks.
You get the full rules – so not just the core rules, and the army builder. Plus, the 8th Edition Codexes until they get updated.
Thanks didn’t realise the difference in the rules, still that doesn’t seem a lot once the new codexes start to come out for more than than the cost of Cult membership here.
Expect GW to go after any third party Apps soon.
Pass. There’s already plenty of free apps out there you can use, and lots of sites where you can get the rules for free (check out Wahapedia- it’s got 95% of all the stats for 40K, AoS, and Kill Team, with all of the core and faction rules for free), not to mention I don’t own a smartphone, so I’d rather not pay for a service that I already have access to from many other sources.
don’t expect that to last …
They probably can use copyright claims to stop the developers from pre-loading their apps with official unit stats and images.
Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if official tournaments only accept ‘digital’ army lists if generated by the official app.
£4 a month is £48 a year. The equivalent service from privateer press (War Room) was free, but only with the stats from the starter sets, and all the other unit stats cost £80 all in as a one off purchase. If the game lasts more than 2 years then the 40K app is notably more expensive, and offputtingly so. I think the last edition of warmachine lasted 8 years. 8 years for £80 vs 8 years for £383 shows how expensive this £4 a month really is. I thought it was going to be £1 a month. That I… Read more »
Battlefront has a similar thing … except you get to pay for practically anything, which really ads up if you don’t specialize in one specific unit.
“to access the Core Rules for free and any Codexes you own”
As evil as GW is … *that* is a really nice feature.
I’d love to have access to a digital army list if I own the hardcopy.
It will be interesting to see how it works once this is released.
“as new codexes are released, older ones will be removed and can be replaced using the code you get when you buy the new print version”
So this reminds me of when Marvel Unlimited had the hardcover issues wrapped up with a code inside to get the digital version of that comic as well. Love how they did that and this sounds like this will be doing the same thing.
So, does that mean the new 40k books will come wrapped now to protect those codes? Hmmm…
I for one will stick to Battle Scribe…Its hard to rationalize paying for one extra book a year in order to build my army. If GW starts shutting down indy apps like they did in the old days they will likely lose all the good faith that they have gained back in the last couple years.
