Games Workshop & Funko Join Forces For 40K Pop! Figures
January 9, 2019 by brennon
A teaser last night is certainly going to hit a lot of the collectors in the pocket as Games Workshop showed off an image which no doubt signals them joining forces with Funko to design Warhammer 40,000 themed Pop! figures.
I'm sure we're going to be hearing more about this in the near future but it looks like straight out of the gate we're most likely going to see them working on Space Marines (who would have thought that, right?)
These Pop! figures are entirely unneeded bits of geekery that I have picked up a few of in the past. I had a number of characters from Destiny on my desk for a long time. I can see these going down very, very well with Warhammer 40,000 fans and maybe we'll see them look towards Age Of Sigmar when it becomes more established too!
I might pick one up if they do Black Templars or Space Wolves...
Will you be getting one if they do your favourite Chapter?

I am not into Funko Pops so these are easy pass to me just like all other Funko Pop figures. That said I do find it interesting that not only there is more chapters than just Ultramarines but also mixture of both regular Space Marines and Primaris Marines.
Is there a link to this teaser?

Why?
Because people like buying additional stuff to support the properties they enjoy, and 40K fans will jump at the chance to put these on their mantlepiece or around their computer etc.
Toy collecting is a thing- and it comes down to the same reason that Funko Pop makes Bioshock, Borderlands or Game of Thrones characters.
40k fits right in with their line (largely adapted from adult geek properties).
Are the guys and girls at GW on cooling aid again? oO
This is a move I’m surprised has taken this long.
Seriously. 40k fits right in with Funko Pop’s line of chibi dolls.
(I don’t mean that sarcastically- they do a lot of dolls from properties that are very violent, like Attack on Titan or Walking Dead).
Well that’s going to sell a ton, even bringing in sales from non GW fans. Folks go crazy over collection Funko stuff.
Big pass for me personally though, never got this crazy. Why would someone want a cartoonized, bobblrheaded, often quite ugly variant of something they like if they can get stuff that actually looks like the sourcematerial? And that’s coming from someone who has dozens of statues etc. from all manner of IPs in his display cases. 😉
Huh. I’m passing for a very different reason. I completely understand why someone would want chibi space marines, I just wish they were gaming scale (if they were, I would buy them all).
Something like Chibi 40K I could get behind as well, bit of a different spin on a familiar setting can be quite fun.
Never got the whole Funko thing, especially as at times they barely resemble the license they’re based on. Luckily there’s always folks ‘inspired’ by 40K:

I totally backed Siblings of Conflict. I love Impact! Miniatures, and Heriberto’s sculpting, so it was an easy choice. Funko isn’t always my cup of tea, but I get what they’re going for. The difference between chibi and caricature is that with a caricature you’re exaggerating all of the more unique facial features (if a guy has a big nose, you make it massive). Chibi art does the opposite- pretty much all facial features except the eyes are down played. Funko Pop takes this to the extreme- where they’re basically using the same face sculpt for Princess Leia and Iron… Read more »
When I first saw the silhouette, I was seriously hoping that it was for a gaming scale line of Chibi 40k miniatures (that maybe I could use with my Super Dungeon, Smog Riders or Arcadia Quest minis).
Its either classic terminators or mondoshawans I think ???
What are classic terminators in comparison to new terminators? Not meant to be sarcastic or anything. I really don’t know about a design change for terminators at any point. Remember Warzan saying something about a design change for terminators in the video where they were talking about the Primaris marines, but didn’t know what change he was talking about 🙁

That or the one piece one’s in the first spacehulk. @torros
That’s the original sculpted by Jes Goodwin
Ah ok, never saw the original one from torros’ reply!
Space Hulk first edition is literally only sitting one meter away from me on the shelf 😀
Lot of us aren’t familiar with those original ones. Oldest Terminators that I had back in day were 2nd edition Deathwing Terminators that I had painted as Blood Angels.
The first ed Space Hulk minis used basically the same design concepts, just a different execution. They’re what you’d expect from the era’s one piece minis.
And I’m not 100% sure whether they came out before or after the metal terminators of that era.
But the original sculpt looks more like the aliens from The Fifth Element (or vise versa I suppose).
ones like this @dubbidubbi

Wow, I dont think I’ve ever seen those. They really remind me of these dudes from 5th Element. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SJnReLKQvM
No. No. If I am going to spend money on game related things. I am going to at least get something I could use in a game. There might be a ton of models to use for gaming that I have never put together in my house. But at least they are gaming pieces that could be used at some point. Unlike this pop thing.
While I’d never personally buy one of these, I don’t really know why I mildly dislike the idea of them. I think it’s partly because it represents the last logical step in the “selling out” of Warhammer 40k. I think another part is that it seems like 40k should be a more serious setting, not one about which you make cheap vinyl bobbleheads… but then again they made some for The Witcher and I didn’t really find that an existential threat, so I’m sure I’m just being a grognard. I had thought this company went out of business, but it… Read more »
There goes more of my money. More so if they do some Chaos guys. POP Eldar, dark or otherwise would look sweet too.
thats a no from me.
Salamanders, ftw.
