Game Hacks: Don’t I Know You From Somewhere?
March 26, 2015 by brennon
We have a lot of old Codices and Armybooks lying around that are filled with a plethora of long dead or indeed forgotten special characters. Most of them are probably now considered completely unusable on the tabletop but who says so? Why don’t we crack them out and give them a go once more…
A lot of us have Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 books on the shelf and these would be somewhere I'd look to bring out those legends. All you have to do is grab it, open up the back and choose one of these old special characters. Pop him or indeed her down as part of your updated army and tweak the rules a bit to see if he or she can still hold their own!
Using The Dynamic Duo
For example let's talk Gotrek & Felix. They haven't been usable for a while now and it's such a shame considering how much of an influence they are having on the End Times with their current books which run in tandem to the events of the main battle game. You can find the rules for them in your 5th Edition Dwarfs Armybook and go from there! It would be awesome to see what some of their old rules do on the battlefields of today!
Let's take a closer look at Gotrek & Felix for a moment and see how they'd work in the new version of the rules and if it would really be so bad to have them here despite the jump in edition! Gotrek's Axe isn't really broken in any sense of the word and functions much like Thorgrim's allowing him to wound anything on a 2+ and giving him the added benefit of multiple wounds on both normal enemies (D3) and daemons/dragons (D6). He also applies -3 to the armour save of anyone he swats with the axe effectively making him a killing machine, as he should be.
Stat line wise they aren't too worse for wear either with both Gotrek & Felix being pretty good at fighting but with a reasonably low wound count. The real boon for them, and something that could easily annoy your opponent (but be quite fun in the mean time), is that they have the Gotrek's Doom special rule. This allows them, on the roll of a 4+ to ignore a spell cast on them or a wound suffered. Basically this isn't Gotrek's day to die so Felix is spared thanks to his good luck (or bad luck from the mindset of a Slayer). It's effectively having a nice ward save that also helps against spells as a whole being cast on them.
I think they'd be a perfect pair to use in modern Warhammer Fantasy and wouldn't cause too much of an issue, especially if used in End Times games where the characters are the big focus. They come in at a combined cost of 477 points so you're not going to see them in small games either!
Rummage In Your Library!
Delve through Armybooks, Sourcebooks, Codices, Supplements and more where you’ll find plenty of characters AND units actually that you could try and get back onto the battlefield.
If you’re a fan of Warhammer Fantasy then you might have some Dogs of War lying around or even the Ravening Hordes book which bridged the gap between two editions - all of these are full of interesting characters and units that could find a place on a new battlefield.
Of course most of the time things aren’t going to be balanced and a character and/or unit might end up walking through all of your foes or just dying after a few tentative steps. Either way it shouldn’t take much to drop a few interesting rules their way, tweak old ones, or even up their stats or drop them in places.
One of the other great aspects of giving this a go is it means that you have ample opportunity to do some customisation and tweaking to existing models in your collection or just go crazy and start kit bashing together some epic old heroes for your new armies.
Just because a character is dropped into the past doesn’t mean they're gone forever. Warhammer 40,000 has been a lot better about keeping special characters alive of late but there are still those who have faded away. With this however we say live long and prosper the Chaos Space Marine Doomrider!
Have you tried this before?

Doomrider was one of my favourite characters back in the day, totally useless most of the time (sometimes would leave the table the same turn he came on), but sometimes he gave me those epic moments in a game where he would roar across the battlefield murdering everything!
being well in to my heresy two of the primarchs i have done are now dead rather than lost or missing 🙁
I keep meaning to make a unit to accompany Cypher since he got new rules
Ferrus Manus is an awesome sculpt, yet he’s bloody dead! How lame is that!
very! the pair of primarchs Fulgrim and Ferrus look fantastic though Ferrus is only actually around until book II which really sucks! I have a scattering of Iron Hands FW stuff in front of me I am doing, really good looking models.
I was hopeing for some of the old wood elf characters..Ariel has had a lot of stories of late but no new rules. The old characters they have killed off in EoT Belnaor the elf mage. The ice queen etc
Done this a few times, also dug up old scenarios and even armies – still have a kislev army that needs building and painting in my project backlog. I would say a great way to include some of these is in a fixed scenario, lets you and your opponent craft the environment a bit, and if it all goes wrong just tweak it and try again.
For example Gotrek and Felix would be great with a handful of mercenaries defending an inn against a wolfrider army – drawing on one of their early scenarios.
I have a full dogs of war army that GW now says is worthless, im so glad i dont play GW products anymore!!! money hungerering W****S!
Sorry to break it to you, but any company that keeps product on the shelves that doesn’t sell is a bad company. Dogs of war had its nice models but it was a line that sold little and therefore must step aside for what will sell. Otherwise GW will go the way of Rackham and ALL GW models will be worthless.
I think his problem isn’t that the Dogs of War aren’t sold anymore, but that they’re no longer in the game at all. Just models sitting on his shelf. GW got where they are today on the backs of smaller games that no longer exist, yet which are still capable of making a profit (like Space Hulk). Things getting cut, while possibly being a sensible business decision, is extremely offputting to those who’ve invested in something. Especially when dodgy stuff like Santa Logan gets released. That said, his comment wasn’t exactly constructive, despite how accurate it may well be.
This is a great idea. I collect the old Warhammer Fantasy books and love a lot of the old characters, so I will definitely have to give this a go.
This would be fun to try!
I have the Albion campaign book, the Truthsayer and Dark Emissary characters were interesting. Perhaps eBay will have their models though I’m sure there’s other that could easily full their role.
I also have an old Eltharion model, not on his gryphon but on foot and blindfolded. I remember the fluff went that he was blinded by Shadowblade and was forced to fight on foot. I’m sure the rules are in an old White Dwarf, I’ll have to dig them up and give him a go again.
The truthsayer and dark emissary models where re released when they released Storm of magic – in “lovely” fine cast
What about Zoats…remember them?
Saw one on ebay a while back but the bidding got a bit rich for me. Regret not getting it!
In previous versions of the Dark Angels codex there was a Veteran Scout Sergeant Naaman. Though he was already dead in that version of the codex, we could resurrect him again 😀
While I’m at it I could set the clock back on Belial, taking him back to the Piscina campaign when he wore power Armour and was Master of the 3rd company.
Grabber-Slashers were my favorite. not characters, but anyway.
An orky head with a great big claw on top and a massive spike protruding beneath.
This was back when Tyranids were spanking new and many of the bioforms were based on existing races, as in tyranids used their genewhatnots to create new beasties. This was based on orks. They jumped around, grabbed your face with their claw and impaled you with their spike.
And Zoats were emissaries of the tyranids and could speak with the invading space marines.
Those were the days,
Of all the “discarded” stuff from G.W.s past I think genestealer Hybrids were the coolest, in particular the Ork/Genetealer Hybrid Broods. In those days conversion projects were affordable, fun and very much encourage!
I must admit that I am mistified by the doctrine that pervades gamers, and GW gamers in particular that insists that something old or OOP cannot be played. It just seems such a weird thing to believe. Yet we see no end of online wailing whenever a gaming company drops or reduces its “support” for something (whatever that means).
Free your mind, free your gaming!
Seems to make absolute sense to me.
I pity those gamers who are forced into the narrow meta of only currently “supported” products and rules.
