Forge World Unleash The Mighty Vulkan Of The Salamanders
August 20, 2014 by brennon
Forge World have continued their character series for the Horus Heresy with the coming of the hammer wielding force of nature that is Vulkan Primarch of the Salamanders...
Now that is one awesome model. The detail on the armour is amazing, the cloak is brilliant, the massive salamander head strapped to the shoulder piece is awesome and that hammer, just, that hammer!!! I think this is possibly one of the coolest if not the best sculpt that Forge World have done for the Primarchs.
Simon Egan has done an amazing job on this miniature and you can see how he went about designing Vulkan in the video linked at the top of this piece. A big thumbs up from me on this one.
Do you like Vulkan?

OMG take my money. Vulkan is one of my favourite primarchs im off to order one
I love the green of the power armour is it metallic?
I hope so much they will do Rogal Dorn next !
I was at Manchester Comic Con in July and asked the guy on the Forge World stand which Primarch model would follow Vulkan. He said he couldn’t tell me but if I was to look at the first couple of FW Horus Heresy books I would notice there is one primarch not yet realised in model form. I haven’t got or read the books so asked a friend of mine and he said the only primarch remaining was…….. Konrad Curze. Don’t quote me but my bet would be there!
Thanks mate, makes absolute sense.
Guess I will have to wait a bit more, for Dorn and for those damn MK3 and 4 Imperial Fists Shoulder Pads.
You may get the pads sooner than Dorn I suspect 🙂 Based on the HH artwork so far, I wager Dorn will be something very special indeed. Personally, I play Death Guard CSM and am thinking about a small Night Lords force so excited for Konrad Curze. Just hope they don’t drop the ball with him like they did with my beloved Morty! Just as well I have a pro sculpted figure of Mortarion in daemon prince form to lead my army!
I liked the Mortarion sculpt a lot, how could you not like him !?
Be it as it may,
but so far I loved all them Primarchs.
I don’t ‘dislike’ it massively. Im just not keen on the model pose. Its enough to put me off buying it anyway. It just looks awkward to me. The model itself is very nice though. My DP sculpt kicks its ass anyway. 🙂
Forge World is really kicking out good sculpts. Expensive, sure, but they look fantastic.
It is nice to finally have a Salamanders character with his helmet off. It looks like we’re going with the ash black version of their skin this time around.
Does anyone know when that changed? I used to think it was quite cool that they had African-looking marines. “In the darkness of the far future, there is only war and white people (as denoted by our target demographic)” to paraphrase 😀
As far as I am aware the Salamanders have always been described as having black (as in black black, not african black) skin and red eyes. This has always been in juxtaposition with their humanity and their closeness to it. They are the one space marine chapter that lives with the people of their homeworld, becoming the chiefs of tribes and head of households, so they are the most embracing of humanity of the Astartes. But they looked the least human, given the black skin and red eyes. As for black people, there have been black people mentioned in the… Read more »
I still have a box of Salamanders somewhere with an ‘African’ (rather than coal!) black skintone on the front of the box, can’t remember if it was a 2nd or 3rd edition release. Pics in ‘eavy metal around that time too. A black friend of mine at school used to collect them on that basis. Guess it’s a funny thing, completely understand that people can paint and model things as they choose, but to have a certain archetype (as painted by the studio) can be a good thing for a kid to relate to getting into the hobby. I’ve heard… Read more »
They were always meant to black black skin, but when the eavy metal team were told black skin they assumed they meant ‘African’ black skin.
I like to think of it as that they’re already “african” black skin was turned “coal” black as intended.
Sorry to break this to you, Thor, but you really don’t have the coolest hammer in town anymore.
Another fantastic sculpt from forgeworld.
Unfortunately having already treated myself to 3 primarchs I can’t really justify another army haha. Fingers crossed I can help a friend of mine pick one up and put it together.
Buy it, buy it, buy it lol
An awesome, very detailed, finely painted figure that makes me wanna shut up and give away my money.
I’d put it in the top 4 Primarch sculpts they have done so far along with Ferrus Manus, Angron and Horus. I’d probably put it 2nd with Ferrus 1st. Horus then Angron.
Agreed
Still think nothing has come close to matching Kabuki’s Fulgrim to be honest!
Another, to go on my FW list of, to buy’s
Think Simon got his primarch sizes mixed up! He says Vulkan is the largest, being as big in his power armour as Horus in his terminator armour. Can’t wait to see Magnus the Red, the true Mr Big McHugeass of the primarchs.
I love the feature that if youd ever loose Vulkans head u easily could use a black olive as a substitute ( some works with Mortarion, but there you best use a shrivelled green olive )
OMG, lol. £55? For one? Well, maybe he’ll look better when they finish painting him.
