First Look At The Full Mark VI Horus Heresy Space Marine Kit!
April 8, 2022 by brennon
Games Workshop is diving right into Warhammer: The Horus Heresy over the next month or so. With the new boxed set on the horizon, they started things off with a preview of the new multi-part plastic kit for the Mark VI Space Marine Tactical Squad.

From initial impressions, they sure do look good. A Space Marine is a Space Marine of course, but I think that the folks behind the designs here have managed to nail that Mark VI look. The Corvus Armour has always been iconic so it would make sense to see it return for this revamp of The Horus Heresy.

The new plastic kit takes cues from the old RTB01 box (which is as old as I am) but the new range is much more posable and customisable (of course). This is making me think that this set is going to be a lot more like the Firstborn Space Marine kits compared to the new Primaris designs.

The miniatures come with your standard Boltgun loadout but you can also strap bloomin' big bayonets to the end as well as chainblades. The sergeant of the squad is going to be able to rock a power sword, power fist or lightning claw alongside their old-school plasma pistol.
The kit also comes with options for additional wargear. You can wave your vexilla from your backpack, use a nuncio-vox or maybe keep an eye out for enemies with an augury scanner. Each Space Marine can also use meltabombs alongside frag and krak grenades.

We're still yet to see what these Space Marines look like when compared to some of the older Heresy plastic kits. They feel bigger, especially after getting a look at those larger bases. Could we be seeing Primaris-sized Horus Heresy Space Marines?

I hope they are more comparable to the older Heresy sets we got in previous boxed games. I like the idea of mixing and matching with those armour sets to create the likes of Blackshields. If you were wondering how these might look not painted up like the Sons Of Horus, Games Workshop also showed off a few more schemes.

It's worth pointing out that if you're not into your Space Marines, there are also loads of other options for both the forces of Chaos, the Imperium and various fringe factions within The Horus Heresy. Arbitorian from YouTube did a great video yesterday talking about just that.

It's yet to be revealed how many of the additional Heresy factions are going to be updated with plastic kits. I would imagine not many. But, there are plenty of options for The Horus Heresy beyond just playing as Loyalists and Traitors.
Are you liking the look of these new Space Marines?

I don’t like them, but then MIV is my preferred tactical armour of choice 😉 Individual poses are great and a step up from the older kits, the helmets and over pronounced leg armour just isn’t my thing. I’ll use them, maybe swap out the helmets at least, but it doesn’t excite me too much.
I think my biggest gripe is they’re likely to tower over the MKIVs I have for another project that’s sat in a box.
OTOH the guy shooting from the hip is the best bolter marine pose I can remember seeing.
Nice. Proper Space Marines from my youth. I might grab a box of these and paint them with orange helmets and hands, and white armour 🙂
I will be definitely getting the box set for painting and diorama projects. I wont be playing the game because I know the modus operandi of GW’s game life cycle – so I don’t play GW games anymore.
The models though are wonderful. I hope they release the new Mk3,4 and 5 sooner than later. I want to do a small diorama for each of the loyalist Legions – including the Dark Angel filth. ?
Those look really good. Beaky Marine supremacy.
Love the old school look from my past…wonder if its a box of 30
Maybe in the starter box. I think they will be sold as a pack of 10 afterwards at £50 a box. That would be my bet.
yeah … based on current pricing model that’s probably a 5-10 figure box for 50-60 Euro.
I kind of hope they will do a ‘start collecting’ set too just for nostalgia sake.
Those were the days right! 30 plastic beakies.. or x2 Rhinos.. or x2 Land Raiders.. or 30 guardsman.. each for $30 a box. Won’t even mention the 30 Squats in a box.. haha
Nice new figures it would be interesting to see the nids battle with the higher tec level of the empire in 30k.
I’m hoping they called this sprue RTB02.
Ha! That was the Space Ork Raiders metal box.
I had that set! Didn’t know that was it’s code! Maybe RTB01.2 then ?
When Adepticus Titanicus came out for the first time, the Space Marines at the time were all MK6 on both sides. Granted, back then the lore was still in flux.
I consider the posing and the scaling on these miniatures to be much better than most GW miniatures and i am tempted, but i also read that there shouldn’t be many, or even perhaps any (if i understood correctly), Heretic Space Marines wearing MKIV armour during the height of the Horus Heresy; and i will also be looking to see whether or not imperial guard miniatures and other ‘standard sized humans’, should any such new miniatures be released, are to the same scale or, once again, if they are instead heroicised such that they make the Space Marines look smaller… Read more »
It’s an odd choice. The MKV heresy armour supposedly represents marines cobbling together what gear they can at the height of the conflict so I guess nicking bits of armour is cannon. I have a box of Word Bearers project and have some resin MKV and beaky marines to mix in if I ever get round to painting them.
*Everyone* having beaky armour would be a retcon though IMO.
Arbitorian (the chap in the post above) has done a video today about why the Beakies being all over the place works quite nicely. I’m just gonna be mixing and matching armour types to make some Blackshields haha.
I’m watching it now. It seems the belief that MKIV wouldn’t have been used is based on the idea that the cobbled together MKV was rolled out during the Heresy and that MKVI was later than that and therefore (largely) unavailable to the traitor legions. However, ArbitorIan explains, MKIV was ready to go into production when the Horus Heresy started and so all legions, whether traitor or loyalist, had templates for MKIV and put it into production during the heresy and MKVI would have become increasingly the armour used by both sides.
That’s one of my two concerns addressed.
They would look good in Stargrave
Beakies !!!
They do look more detailed than I remember them, but those are the spacemarines from the Rogue Trader era.
I would love to see them compared to the classics from the 90’s and the current primaris marines.
Not gonna lie, they look even goofier than the 40k marines, i guess nostalgia is a driving factor in their popularity?
So when do the traitor legions get the Chaos Marine backpack?
And now, for the price tag……
if you need to know then you can’t afford it 😉
or rather : just look at current prices for boxes and you’ll know what these will cost.
And if they really need 20 units per squad you will need multiple boxes as I kind of doubt they’ll do anything bigger than 10 man squads / box.
There was a time when I believed that the whole point of plastic miniatures was to make them affordable.
How silly of me.
I demand GW release some add on packs with bits to make the new Mark 6’s look legion specific.
I.e. I want some Night Lord bits!
Overall they look ok…though I’ll reserve judgement for when I get some in hand.
They do look chunkier than I’d expect and the lack of special & heavy weapons is a bummer. But, from what GW have hinted this is only the beginning and so more sets or upgrade kits should be on their way…I certainly hope so.
I’m only really interested in these for some 2nd ed games so if no plastic special & heavy weapons are coming then I’ll likely give them a miss which is a shame as I was hoping they’d revisit beakies.
Only time will tell.
I have to say, these minis are making me consider putting a Luna wolves army together.
