New Dawn Of War III Gameplay Preview From E3
June 14, 2016 by brennon
Dawn Of War III looked fantastic when all we'd seen was a cinematic trailer a few screenshots of gameplay. Well, now we've seen a nice preview of the gameplay which seems to show a whole lot of smashing apart of Eldar and plenty of big guns blowing things up.
In the trailer above you'll see the hero character smashing his way through ranks and ranks of Eldar while being supported by a range of infantry from the Space Marine side. The Eldar are fighting back too with Fire Prisms and all sorts.
I think the big drop of the Imperial Knight who then starts to rip apart the Eldar is the coolest part of the trailer. I'd like to see a more focused trailer on gameplay too at some point as I think it would be neat to get an idea of regular gameplay before the fighting.
What do you think?

Looks really promising. How ever question remains, is it more like DoW1 or more like DoW2?
A mix of the two from all accounts – base building is back but they still have some squad elements.
I gotta say… I’m actually pretty unimpressed. I can speak from experience that I know how hard it is to make isometric perspectives in games readable and pretty. But the characters aren’t grounded, the animations are synchronized and the sheer mass of effects make it really hard to understand what’s going on. It’s like all the pieces are there, but they aren’t coming together nicely. But I suppose it was rushed to get something to E3.
Pretty much agree with this.
It looks much like Diablo III. The screen is so full of effects that’s it’s hard to figure out what’s going on.
looks great shame you cant get four knights to just decimate the enemy like the landraiders could.
MANY SKULLS !!!!!!!!
I’m rather unimpressed.
The animations look somewhat stiff and there’s way too many things going on at once.
And what’s with a Terminator jumping around as though he’s an Assault Marine? And the bodies flying all over?
Sadly, it looks like they’ve gone Hollywood on 40K, making it all about the spectacle rather than keeping it more low-key and grim.
Overhyped rts with wow-like visuals … not impressed. Where is Space marine 2?
I agree it’s not great, but you can’t say it has WOW-like visuals. Blizzard blatantly stole their art-style from Games Workshop. I don’t even think that’s ever been in dispute.
I wasnt refering to the unit design, more the candy lightning explosions and effects 🙂

Was absolutely in love with the announcement trailer, and definitely underwhelmed by the gameplay footage. I didn’t like Gabriel Angelos flipping around in terminator armour, at all. Throwing his hammer into the air, jumping up to catch it, and riding it down to the ground in a massive explosion? Is this a 40k anime? The colours and over-saturated effects really robbed the game of its style, too. It’s very clear they are aping MOBAs like League of Legends with this look and style, and I don’t feel like that’s a good direction to take 40k, at all. Still very early… Read more »
Interesting stuff, and definitely on the Space-Marine-as-superhero end of the spectrum of depictions of the 40k universe. Then again, that really isn’t anything new for the series. Does anyone here remember the sync-kill animation for when a Space Marine Captain finished off a Bloodthirster from all the way back in the Original Dawn of War game? Here’s a link to refresh everyone’s memory;- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKHsj5y8UL8 Yeah – jump up on its shoulders and smack it upside the head with your power sword – classic daemon-slaying form right there. The Grey Knights would be proud… We’ll just have to see how things… Read more »
Welp, there goes all my hype. Cartoony graphics, laughably MOBA-esque hero animations, generally bland combat animations, and a complete lack of the grittiness of the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, and gameplay that looks completely lacking of the parts that made the previous games so great.
I was willing to look past the inevitable SEGA dlc gouge fest if the game was good and fun, but I don’t see that happening at all at this stage in development.
For pre-alpha footage, not bad. Some of the animations are over the top, but don’t kid yourself… “bodies flying” was a hallmark of DoW1. People seem to have a selective memory about that revered game. It was over the top quite a lot. And it was fun because of it. RTS’s that stress dark and gritty over visibility are often just bland, dirty messes which make it hard to follow anything because of the desaturation and “weathering.” I have to believe that more texture and particle work is in the works, as is normal for this stage of development.
Bodies flying from explosions. Not a terminator jumping fifteen feet in the air and doing a fancy trick with his hammer he learned watching bleach. Warhammer needs gritty crunch, not cartoony visuals. DoW2 got that part right without being a ‘bland, dirty mess’.
The scale in DoW2, which was miniscule, allowed for that approach. More units means more effects, more effects means more visual noise. More visual noise leads to confusion. As a designer, you want to avoid that. Doesn’t matter how great your units look when you can’t find the things very well. So DoW2’s scale allowed for more of that. This didn’t (there are some Khaine animations in that game which are pretty comical.) This will not either. If I can have a decent sized engagement again and the price I have to pay is less dirt and grime on my… Read more »
/edit meant to say “Dow1 didn’t… and this (DoW3) won’t either.
I agree.
people were complaining about the Diablo 3 style too.
Claiming it was ‘too colourful’ (cartoonish even) and not ‘gritty enough’.
Except at release the extra colour was what was needed for that game.
And I’ll bet it works for this one too.
Heck … people seem to forget that despite all of the ‘grim dark’ of the setting we still have space marines in neon glow armour on the table top.
We don’t paint any of the 40k units in camouflage patterns.
We don’t spend hours weathering vehicles and gear in a way that makes them feel rusted and decrepit.
As Beavis and Butthead would say, This sucks.
Hmm, this looks both awesome and completely impossible to tell what the hell is going on.
And I thought it was ridiculous when C.S. Goto had a Terminator do a roll-fall. 😛
