Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War III Announced!
May 3, 2016 by brennon
Well they went ahead and did it! Dawn Of War III - the sequel to one of the biggest Warhammer 40,000 games out there is now on the cards and you can view the trailer for it above.
The game will come with three separate campaigns focusing on the Space Marines, Eldar and Orks of Games Workshop's Sci-Fi universe.
Gameplay - What Do We Know?
As well as that it seems like they are promising some rather titanic battles with massive Eldar Wraithknight and Imperial Knights clashing. I can't wait to see how this plays out on screen.
According to sources the game will be bringing back some big armies and more to help make for an interesting transition into a new generation. Here's what we know thanks to PC Gamer.
- Big Armies - The larger forces of Dawn of War I return featuring an array of interesting options for your army.
- Base Building - Following in the footsteps of larger armies we also have the return of Base Building as an element of gameplay. Power Generators and Requisition Points will still be a thing but you'll have somewhere to protect this time around.
- Elite Troops - In keeping with some of the lessons learned from Dawn of War II they have kept the levelling up of elite units. This will mean that you can specialise 'MOBA' style into a particular way of playing. While the regular line troops are dying in droves the elite units will be focusing on those objectives.
- Big Guns - As we know the Imperial Knight and Wraithknight are going to be making an appearance. These are massive units that deal out a sickening amount of damage to the opponent. They are looking impressive.
- Space Marines Get A BIGGER Gun - The Space Marines have access to an Orbital Gun which will rake across the ground turning any enemy you touch to ash. I'm sure the other races will have their super weapons too.
- Cover Returns - The cover mechanic also returns but in a simpler style allowing you to hop into it and keep your units alive.
Not bad right?
The Blood Angels are also returning and it will be fun to see where their story goes.
"With war raging and the planet under siege by the armies of greedy Ork warlord Gorgutz, ambitious Eldar seer Macha, and mighty Space Marine commander Gabriel Angelos, supremacy must ultimately be suspended for survival."
Superb. We can't wait for this one.
What do you think?
"The Blood Angels are also returning and it will be fun to see where their story goes..."

Oh hell yeah, bring it!
Sweet Jesus, that’s beautiful…. 0.o I need it right now!!!
Dow was one of the greatest rts of it’s time, dow2 was meh. I’m going to stay cynical, that way it can only be a pleasant surprise.
Wow, GW is really bring out all the stops, trying to reinvent themselves/recapture the magic. I think this one of the smartest things they can do. Dawn of War is basically an advertisement for them.
Blood Ravens all the way through all three Dawn of War, love the continuity.
It needs to go to back to the roots. I still play DoW to this day. DoW2 collects dust.
I think that is the plan.

Thanks for the link. I feel much better now.
From what I understand, the person responsible for the design decisions that gave us the reduce scale and scope of DoW2 left Relic and went to work on Blizzards’s Starcraft II. If that’s true (been a few years since that kerfuffle) I do wonder if he was a little more attached to the Starcraft, micro-heavy, small scale type RTS than what DoW was supposed to be.
In my own little fantasy, I’d led Eugen do a huge scale 40k game, Epic, Maybe? If you’re an RTS fan and have missed their Wargame series, do yourself a favor and check it out. It’s card and requisition system would be great if applied to a 40k game, IMO. Plus… battles are fought over miles, not yards, wile still letting infantry have their day.
Just when I was contemplating shifting over to Novamarines after years of silence on the Blood Raven’s front. (plus, quartered schemes are fun).
But no. Red and Bone to the last.
I’m not too sure if the return of base building is a good thing, but I do like that it’s not as skirmish focussed as the previous one was.
Too bad it’s a pre-rendered trailer and not in-game graphics.
It’s good to be a computer war gamer these days.
I meant to upvote you and hit the stupid downvote (why do you even have that option anyway BoW?) in a fat fingered flurry, apologies! Somebody do me a favour and hammer his upvote!
Ta!
Regardless of how the game turns out, that was an absolutely stunning trailer.
the trailers / intro movies for Dawn of War have always been stunning.
I think we can thank GW for that though.
DOW 2 along with Space Marine were the best two adaptions of the space marine lore to a playable game.
Now this, this is the worst trailer I have seen for the DOW franchise, marines do nothing but pointlessly die (and be happy about it), orks seem to have better tactical awareness and in general the whole plot shows nothing other than the endless meaningless grind of death to fill the III with the bodies of the dead.
Ok it might simulate what the tabletop 40k has become quite well, but this is not what I wanted to see, DOW trailer said a story, DOW 2 trailer said a far better story DOW 3 is just a spectacle that even goes against the fluff.
On the game, do we need another DOW 1? personally I much preferred DOW 2 on story-mode, but DOW 1 for idle multiplayer, since the game will be played mostly on multiplayer mode, I believe the choice of a hybrid is not a bad one.
To be fair, the Space Marines are habitually depicted as being somewhat fatalistic in the 40K and 30K lore, essentially being posthumans superior to the ordinary run of humanity in every way, with vastly extended lifespans and greatly expanded cognitive functions alongside their physical superiority, and yet doomed to live lives of endless, bloody warfare until their inevitable deaths in battle.
The fiction is also littered with quotes such as ‘It is better to die for the Emperor than to live for yourself’ and ‘What is the terror of death? To die with your work incomplete. What is the glory of life? To die having done your duty.’ Since Space Marines are genetically engineered and pretty much brainwashed to more or less know no fear, they don’t fear death itself, and so long as they die believing they have accomplished their goals and aided their chapter in its mission objectives, then in their minds they have upheld their Chapter’s honour, served their Emperor, and died as heroes. A sort of brutally violent, martial version of an ‘oh death, where is thy sting?’ philosophy.
Yes, but it never was a pointless death without fighting back.
I understand the trailer wants to be an allegory, but it rubs me the wrong way.
Yes, I understand most do not like DOW 2 because massive battles look better, but DOW 2 (and Space marine) delivered the space marine experience better than any other game that includes them from gameplay and from narrative perspective.
DOW 3 may do that, but the trailer for me sets it off to a bad start, the screenshots shown not so much though.
I wouldn’t worry too much @psychoticstorm – on prior form, the Mahreens will soon enough resume their usual posterior kicking, bolter-toting service in the following trailers for the game. I find it telling that no recognizable, named Blood Raven characters (or any faction leader characters) are present in the trailer. These are disposable grunts being offed to show how bloody the war for the artifact McGuffin thingy is. Once figures like Gabriel Angelos turn up, I think things will change rather quickly.
The various flavours of Codex Astartes Space Marine army are the most popular 40K faction after all, and I guarantee that the people over at Relic are fully aware of that. They are simply letting them get a bit bloodied first, so that the contrast of the against-the-odds heroism that comes later will be all the more pronounced.
I hope mission design wont be as lame as in DoW 2 but rather like CoH 1 oder DoW 1
Ummmm…. Brutally beautiful?
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy…………
Over excited a little..
I shall reserve judgement on the game until it comes out, but from this first trailer I have to say it looks like this might be exciting and depending on my financial state at the time of release I might pick it up.
I didn’t think this would ever happen, I had better finish DoW before this comes out.
looks f’ing great with added knights YES please.
Dat Wraithknight tho…
If (and it is a BIG if) my pc will run this then this is the biggest no-brainer decision for me since Metal Gear 5 was announced 😛
SPESS MEHRENS Are back
Did they loose the “heroscale” on the marines…they are quite slim 😉
That was some trailer, although I felt the bodies making up the “III” at the end, felt like a nod to the chaos gods on one of the death worlds…
Also, the way that the wraith knight moved, with a grace reserved for the elder was beholding to watch; beautiful.
Very pretty, if not a bit arty in spots – will wait for the game play to decide – hoping for a nice RTS
No chaos is a refreshing change
I think depending on how well this game sells (let’s be honest, unless SEGA pull another Colonial Marines, which I’d doubt as Relic are solid then it’s gonna sell bloody well!) I’m sure we’ll see a plethora of expansions, I’d expect Tau, Guard and Chaos to be at the forefront of any further content as well.
Dark Eldar would be an awesome surprise though >_>
It’s a really lovely abstract trailer, I like it.
This looks absolutely ACE.
ACE I SAY.
ACE.
BOSS AS HECK!
Bring it on DoW III, we can handle it!
Hot digity DOG! 🙂
DOW1 shat all over two. Cant wait for base building again. Played and completed two, thought meh, went back to one.
Grim Dark! Awesome!
Can’t wait for this!!!
Base building is back, woohoo! Although I do enjoy DoW2 I do miss base building.
Did anyone else notice the design change on the Blood Ravens? The knee pads are skulls now. Hmmm a hint to the little bit of heresy from the previous games perhaps?
Can’t wait for this. Especially the Knights. I am not sure I like their interpretation of Wraithbone though.
AWESOME. !!!!!!!!!!!!!! NUFF SAID.
Brother G
Very interesting stuff, and as observed by dags and dice this trailer has an almost poetic, artistic bent to it. It almost makes me wonder if someone isn’t trying to make an oblique reference to the futility of war, and how that futility is even more evident in a universe where there is iconically ‘only war’.
I liked the proportions of the Space Marine models – they were less bulked out and looked more liked the scaled up humans that they are described as being in the fluff. They looked like they could pair transhuman strength with transhuman agility even in their battle plate, as they do in the lore, rather than lumbering along in a lumpen, ungainly fashion in power armour when that gait is more appropriate for the bulkier Terminator plate.
The Orks were ramshackle, anarchic, and gleefully violent, as Orks should be. I see no problems with the Greenskins in terms of their depiction in the trailer.
Of the three factions, I liked the take on the Eldar best of all. It really conveyed both the ancient character of the faction and its penchant for powerful, crystalline technology. Those Wraith Knights were awesome.
On the subject of large units, the Imperial Knights also really looked the part, and their industrial, smoke belching mass paired with knightly heraldry formed a strong contrast with the alien grace of the Eldar super heavies, just as they do on the tabletop.
All in all, and bearing in mind that this is only the initial announcement trailer and some alpha stage screen shots, everything is looking rather encouraging. Getting back the larger scale forces that facilitate the kind of massed clash of arms that are so central to the 40K lore is especially great news. Here’s hoping that all the elements come together and GW’s digital licensing wing continues the roll they seem to have been on recently.
I’m thrilled that DOW is back. There were some stunning visual references in the trailer/teaser but I felt really unsatisfied with the lack of story. Yes the playable races were introduced, yes they look stunning and well rendered, but what is their motivation for battle?
The codex Astartes does not support chargin an Ork Deff Dread with but only a chainsword as your weapon of choice. Besides the foolish Space Marine (DoW 1 and 2 had better cinematics) I’m liking the direction they wish to go.
Smooth Wraithbone? Or raw, pitted and quickly grown? Both look good.
I’m really hoping that this also means that there is a chance to get Space Marine 2…
This and Warhammer: Total War certainly seem to be improvements over the shovelware that has been produced under GW licenses lately.
There have certainly been some duds, but I think it’s a tad harsh to suggest all of it has been shovelware.
Vermintide seemed to have mostly positive reviews when it was released on the PC (I expect the same when it hits consoles).
Mordheim I’ve no idea of, but a quick look suggests a mostly positive reaction (it looks like the people who make it have a real love for it).
Even the recent mobile Deathwatch and Warhammer Quest games by Rodeo Games (who sadly aren’t going to develop them anymore) are pretty good.
The Space Hulk FPS game on the horizon I’m optimistic for (it certainly looks the part).
I obviously don’t know how GW went about giving out these license, but it seemed that they generally gave them out to people who were fairly passionate about the subject matter; I’d say there have been more hits than misses.
Can not wait for a gameplay video!
Havent touched pc gaming for a few years, preferring to concentrate on table top hobby…. going to need a new PC now.
Yeah, the marines look a bit less heroic-scale…
what’s the name for that kind of cinematic symbolism?
they have the slowed down siren call but no ultra-slow piano theme 🙂
wish 40k fans did ‘scene by scenes’ like the Star Wars trailers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tZQr0-3D70
I’ll definitely be getting this after loving the first two but regardless, that was an EPIC teaser trailer…
So, is this a preview of WH40K: End Times? Everyone died…in droves.
Garg for the Garg Bot !!!
Is it just me or are all those bodies, marine, ork, eldar, pouring into a giant genestealer egg at the end? The great devourer! are the Tyranids going to make a surprise appearance?
I think the imagery is supposed to be a bit more esoteric and symbolic than that @sparks. if I had to guess, I think that the lines of falling bodies (that to my eyes seem to be falling into a rock outcrop of some kind) represent the lives sacrificed on a figurative (and also perhaps literal, more on that in a moment) altar of war. While that could just refer to the desire to control the artifact of all three factions, I think it more than likely that it is a nod to the already hinted at fourth faction for the game, and such ritualistic imagery strongly suggests that this fourth faction will be of Chaos origin – Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows and all that.
That said, maybe I am wrong – the quote at the beginning of the trailer from Inquisitor Czevak about there being a terrible darkness descending on the galaxy is drawn from the 40K tabletop game lore, and I am pretty sure he is referencing the Tyranids when he says it, the end being about it having a form and purpose operating on an unimaginable scale, and if it is aware of us at all it must know us only as prey, or something like that.
Now that’s a trailer! I particularly like the rendition of wraithbone. You don’t see that on the tabletop very often.
But since it’s all cinematics I’m still waiting to see how any of it is included in the gameplay.
That was bad ass!!!!! They need to make a movie from this.
