Dark Vengeance Revamp & New Warhammer 40k Terrain!
July 19, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop have taken a break from the new armies for a week and instead bring us a revamped version of Dark Vengeance and the new Realm of Battle Board which, at its most expensive, is the Ultima Quadrant...
First up we have the new look Dark Vengeance set which is essentially all the same bar the different rulebook and artwork that now adorns the box. It certainly fits in with the existing art style and it's quite a nice boxed set too so it's good to see it staying around.
As well as the newly revamped Dark Vengeance we have this Realm of Battle collection which can be as big and impressive as the Ultima Quadrant or as sparse as the Primaris Quadrant which is below it. The cost is still fairly high to get yourself a complete board but it doesn't actually look too bad. Some of the choices in design are a bit strange but if you want urban in one set then this gives it to you.
What do you think of the new scenery?

That’s a pretty cool DV box…should tempt a few new players into the dark depths of the 40K universe.
New DV box art looks nice and they added model for CSM. From what I heard that could be Aspiring Champion which would be odd considering that as far as I know neither Chosen or Cultists can take one.
You can just use it as another chosen.
I can’t decide whether I like the new city board or not. What I’m sure of is that it’s not a patch on the Forge World city boards. It’s half the price of the FW one but less than half as good perhaps. Individual details on the board look great though. If GW ever sell panels individually, I could see myself buying one to chop up to make scenery, but no way would I buy a whole set of six.
On the old realm of battle board they did a 2 board expansion, maybe they will do that with this?
The board is nice enough, although massively overpriced and any even moderately experienced modeller could make something as good with a weekend and some MDF. Wish GW would go back to trying to foster creativity and modelling skill in youngsters who get into their games. The old WD articles and terrain books were wonderful for that kind of thing – funnily enough, I think a lot of the guys making great terrain today (and have even gone on to start their own terrain companies) started in this kind of way. Nowadays it is just ‘buy everything’, and the end result… Read more »
I agree.
PLus I don’t think it’s much of a time saver, with the prepping and painting of so many details.
Looks nice, but yeah… I prefer a home-made table any time.
Agreed. I spend more than half my hobby time building terrain, and cut my teeth on GW’s excellent book on the subject. Then I went to buy one for a friend as a gift and discovered they didn’t make it any more. Just another case of GW stepping on their dick in pursuit of the bottom line. If you have $100 budgeted to spend on your hobby, you’re going to spend it anyway. So why not throw your customers a bone and sell them a book that shows them how to build simple terrain? That way, they can spend their… Read more »
I just wish that GW thought not every environment in a GrimDark future is full of old crumbling buildings.
If you want far cheaper terrain, and don’t go for the bombed out look, try Pegasus Hobbies. They make modular Gothic buildings similar to the GW ones, along with a cathedral, and other sci-fi terrain pieces. Same look at a fraction of the cost.

The battles board is wonderful for those who wish to create dioramas etc.
It is completely useless for actual gamers. Much like their original product.
DV looks a bit sexier! and in line with the new art look of the new rulebook. Nice free mini as well making it even better value for money – nice one GW.
i hope you guys did not forget this:

they will hit stores soon, with more variety, cheaper and more playability.
(an i can but shake my head at the many fanboys here)
Fanboys in BoLS are far worse than fanboys here in BoW. I made mistake and I looked at comment section in BoLS site. Those comments were double facepalm worthy.
This is poor quality trolling. For starters it’s not logical. Why would you be reading comments that are worse than another site’s? Secondly is your nose not broken from all the facepalming you’re doing? Please don’t troll unless you know how to do it properly – or better yet just leave to the experts.
I love that when I look at those Secret Weapon boards I see nice FLAT spaces for my models to stand. Hint hint GW.
The new Realm of Battle board isn’t worth the price. For the same cost I could make a far far better board. It’s bad enough most of the details in the boards make no sense, unless the Imperium builds their walls than pushes them over before building their cities.
Nice boards to expensive but.
With tax that’s over $1000 for what? Plastic copy past junk! That be my drinking money for a month. Not happening mates!
Those boards are fecking atrocious.
I think I personally would go with one of those roll-out printed rubber mats to the plastic moulded tiles, infact that Infinity one you guys had on this morning’s Weekender was perfect – plus it didnt need to be painted and no detailed seemed repeated.
I’m surprised with how disappointing that new realm of battle board is. The actual detailing is beautiful, but some of the design is really, really, jarringly odd. Others have commented on how it looks like a wall laid on it’s side. Why on earth did they do this?
Secondly, the previous realm of battle board had 6 unique designs. Why doesn’t this? It looks lazy, boring, and undermines what could have been a really great product.
Ugly and overpriced
I can understand that the imperium may ‘new build’ some habitats from prefabricated panels so can understand those. Just can’t fathom large raised aquilas and decorative frescos/panels on the floor. One board perhaps that is the floor of a cathedral but repeated on every panel…..throws everything out. Can imagine them as sides on a road atop an embankment. Possible to cut the boards along the roadside to this I guess. Lot on money to spend on something that would need some serious conversion though…
I am very, very far from being a GW fan but I’m looking at that photo of the DV set now and am reminded that you do get a lot of stuff there don’t you. New box art looks very nice too. Really thought after the guys’ discussion last week on the subject of starter sets that DV would be going the way of the dodo with a new approach with stuff like Stormclaw but I’m quite pleased even as a non-40k player that they’re keeping it. That board doesn’t do much for me but for aesthetic reasons really. I’m… Read more »
I think I am officially priced out of GW stuff now. Been playing and buying for over 25 years. Unless something really amazing comes out, I think my money is better spent on some of the newer companies coming out with better sculpts and fresher ideas. GW will probably always be the giant to aspire to, and they have done some great stuff over the years, but it just seems stale to me now.
I’ve been driven to EBay as well lol. Luckily I already have all the fantasy mini’s I want from GW, and don’t play 40k or WF. I’m always looking for heroes though, or specialty units, but have been consistently disappointed by their latest offerings. Lots of other companies out there, as you say.
Are GW and FW having a competition to see who can rinse their customers the fastest?
£500 for a box of plastic is just horrendous!
